Is waving to others free spirits allowed

In our 27 year old Hymer we are so pleased to be going down the road without some new defect manifesting itself ,we wave like crazy!

On our maiden voyage we got a flash, and obviously returned the wave/flash.
To wave or not to wave is personal choice, but it definitely made us smile, so thank you whoever you are.

Now a flash is different, that doesn't involve me taking my eyes off the road but that's another thread, probably? 😄

Definitely another topic but the Highway Code Rule 110 makes this clear.
Rule 110
Flashing headlights. Only flash your headlights to let other road users know that you are there. Do not flash your headlights to convey any other message or intimidate other road users.

How do you turn the heater on and off, turn indicators, switch on you lights, radio volume down , get the wife to do it for you?
Well, I know where the heater controls are, so on the rare occasions that I need to change the setting while driving, I don't have to look. All the rest have controls on the steering wheel so not only do I not have to look, I also don't have to take my hand off the wheel.
And no, I don't have a wife.

A thread about flashing could descend into chaos…..😂😂
He did exactly as the Highway Code states- he let me know he was there! 😂

’m not really sure what a transporter is? If I had to guess I’d say it was a big truck carrying cars so I assume it’s not that as otherwise I wouldn’t think it was weird as lorry drivers seem to flash and honk their horns a lot so I wouldn’t be surprised if they waved as well! I need educating please :giggle:
Old school car transporter drivers wave at each other but not the youngsters but again ther is a class thing going on so the big transporter driver wave at each but wont wave at smaller transporter drivers

What do you drive? Must be a Ferrari with the turn indicators on the steering wheel next to the light switch.????? I've got a wife do you want one?

It is not really about the hand movements but about the visual distraction. I am not against waving but it is not my highest priority, for me watching the road comes before peering into an oncoming vehicle to see if they are waving.
Do you peer when driving?

I know, but '..let them know you're there' is a bit meaningless without specifying circumstances.

Two feet behind trying to overtake is 'there', 50yards ahead on other side of the road oncoming is 'there', waiting for somebody else to get round some obstacle is 'there' - after all, as Eccles said, 'everybody's got to be somewhere'.

So I do whatever feels right, which is usually not wave because back in the 1960s my father (towing a caravan) used to wave at all other caravans & it scared me excreta-less to see his hands - and attention - somewhere other than the officially recommended place.

A flash (of headlights) or a finger raise when a gesture of appreciation is appropriate will suffice. But I'll talk to anybody & never knowingly leave anyone feeling short of a hug when not driving!

If you want to see restrained guestures indicating "I recognise a fellow member of my tribe" dont borrow a Bongo and drive one within 500yds of a BOngo they are Nutters and exuberant to realise they are not the only one on the road. (or were 5 years ago when I had one)

I think waving when you notice the occasional tribe member is understandable but waving at motorhomes is often not an occasional thing. On roads like the A35 through Dorset there are times when every 3rd vehicle seems to be a motorhome and constant waving is a distraction.

That's when i leave it to the passenger (well happens to be most of the time)

Hi All,

After many years of owning a Motorhome I have treated myself to a new camper van, but which category does it belong?
Seats yes, captain seats yes, wet room/toilet yes, cooker and fridge yes comfy bed/seat yes, so am I Motorhome or camper van,
The question was do we wave at each other ( when safe to do so) I feel that I’m incognito! Only a few Motorhomers will wave back, and the same with campervans?

I sit on fence or better still I sit incognito in L2K
depends what you're waving at them.

I wave all the time with my big yellow hand (when hubby is driving) love it when people wave back. 👋 😊

I do agree.

Making the wave is easy, lift your hand off the wheel and show the flat of your hand could be dangerous if a front tyre bleww at that moment...

Most of the danger is, in my opinion, looking for the wave back!

So don't look.

I started waving on a trip to Montana where a workmate explained that it was impeded in the culture of Montana, derived and developed from back in history when passing strangers out on the wide prairie!

I was told that there were three variation of the wave but I've forgotten those details.

However;

Back in the day (70s) when I drove a Reliant Scimitar GT, I became aware that I was being flashed and waved at by weird three-wheeled “things”
I was nonplussed
Should I have responded?

I hope you're not referring to my Bond Bug, when minus roof the closest thing you can get to a Luke Skywalker Landspeeder.

In the large white brick waving was pretty normal.

Since I bought the silver PVC the practice has just ... faded away. Large bricks rarely recognised me, other vans tended not to participate.

And then you rewire. In the same way I'm not aware of, say, cars of the same make passing me, I've largely given up on even noticing other motorhomes. I'm just driving, paying attention to the road, and there is a stream of vehicles large and small coming from the other direction. Are some motorhomes? Probably.

Well, not only were the tiny orange pests not badged as Reliants, but I think the “drivers” were too busy levering the thing upright as it had fallen over on a tight turn, again…………😁

Only an issue on tight left-handers with no passenger. If the inside wheel lifted it was very responsive to a quick right-left flick of the steering to put it down again. 😂
Most of my passengers were amazed at how it could be whipped through a 'roundabout'. 😱

And neither my wife nor I ever waved at other Bugs!

I forgot to mention we also tried one of these...

We changed from coach built to panel van conversion not so many waves now:( are we a lesser species 🐜

I'm too busy to wave, I'm looking at the road and not who's in what van and are they waving?

That's just an excuse but in reality I can't see what the point is? I've seen people waving across 6 lanes of motorway.....why?

When we first got a moho we used to wave occasionally but soon realised how ironic it could be when people wave like mad at you out on the road, but some of those same wavers wouldn't even give you eye contact to say hello when parked on a site or at a show?

We've always had VW's: bay window, splits and T5, and there has always been an acknowledgement when another one passes, but not a wave perse.

I liken it to me waving at all cars the same colour as mine or all lorries the same type as mine. Why would I?

But that's me being a misery in some people's eyes, and that's fine. I do find it pathetic though when you read that people have counters in their vans to log how many waved and how many didn't, and the ones that didn't get called names or you see people with great big foam hands to wave or a hand giving the finger.....grow up!

With these new AI cameras that are nicking people not just for speeding but also for using your phone, not wearing a seat belt, eating while driving or anything else that may constitute an offence, the foam hands or signs in windscreens could be costly.

Wave at me if you want but you aint getting nowt back, I'll be busy.

I just wave when I’m concentrating and feel miserable whenI miss a wave…::bigsmile:
