Is this the end of forums or forum participation?

I asked the Funbot why forums are better than facebook. A good answer I thought. :D

It's crazy...I was struggling with some web code PHP. A guy posted the question in chat gpt and the answer came back with the lines of code for the specific platform and works after adding a closing tag ...

I was amazed...how the bloody hell would it know that ??? I mean 120 lines of code that was new code to alter the structure of how the custom page worked..

Ask could Sean Dyche could save Everton. It didn't know he was even the manager

OK with you now

It is ok for basic stuff. But as soon as you start getting complicated or specialist it can make stuff up. Also it will write code that is lacking error checking unless asked and can even write bad security code.
If it doesn't know it will make stuff up that is really convincing. Remember it was trained by every idiot on the internet using code that can date back 20 odd years. Best practices are not a high priority for it, convincing you that it is right is.

I stopped using it for anything except basic boiler plate stuff now.

My main contract at the moment (and for 5 years) has been as a PHP developer it is how I make my bread and butter money. Contracted for 20 hours a week on that job.

Yup, agreed. As discovered a few times since on simple things (not.code related) it will just out and out lie...
Outrageous.

Yep agree, it’s ok for writing executive summaries though!

But to be fair Phind which is based on ChatGPT it did allow me to create this script in only 2-3 minutes. Would have taken me 10 minutes or more as I test each stage before moving onto the next and having to delete the previous step(s) effects on the database each time slowed me down. Took something like 5-7 prompts to get it do write this.

I told it things like hardcode localhost. Redo each line of SQL instruction so that if it fails it exits with an error message, Told it to pass the parameters in a specific order on the command line rather than hard code them.
I could add extra tests and checks, but the code is not for public use only for my internal use and it works good enough for my use cases.

I could have done this myself, but having a code generator do it for me with a few prompts saved me some time.

So I am not against this technology, in fact I do use it. But I understand it's limitations. My worry would be the new or inexperienced programmer using it and creating software with security holes that will give us the next major internet worm or worse.

That said. I am planning my post software development career because I suspect these things will become more capable to the point where my job becomes extinct in the next 5 years perhaps 10.

We have a couple of teams looking into it at the moment, data scientists and developers, as you say it has the potential to be a real time saver. Luckily I’ve only got 17 days in work before retiring so no need to look for another niche.

My recommendation to my clients is. If you know what you are doing and have years of experience you can use it if you are carefull, but keep it out of the hands of novices and the inexperienced developer as it will do more damage than good.

Yes, as of now it can replace "type time" and as you say needs checking over.
But as it gets trained and eliminates errors it will get better.
100% trustworthy ? No,
Some jobs lost to other areas ? Of course ,already happening.

Critical parts of code surely can't be trusted to it, but things like basics of SEO writing, manuals, and simple processing is a real time saver.

But will still need checking.

Be interesting to see how it evolves
