Pick up our new and 1st motorhome on Wednesday! Need to start to look at arranging insurance. I will do the usual price comparison websites etc but any recommendations. Any things I need to be aware of to make sure it's covered properly?

Very wise with a new m/h until all the teething issues have been resolved ;) .

After extensive research before buying new vehicle ended up with Comfort Insurance. Caravanguard refused due to no experience driving a motorhome together with the high cost of coverage required at 84k.

I’ve had nothing but good experiences with insuring through the Caravan club (or Caravan and Motorhome club now).
Many moons ago we wrote off a caravan on a motorway and they were very efficient about dealing with our claim. More recently we had our motorhome stolen and we felt that we were given a very fair payout for the value of our van.

I would definitely use them again (if they’ll have me!) ;-)

Interestingly, identical quotes Caravan and Motorhome club (of which I am a member) £850. Comfort £340.

Done 5 quotes now plus Compare the market and only compare the market came up close to Comfort. (cannot recall which was their cheapest company.)

It amazes me that Saga don't do campervan insurance. I was with them before we bought our van and whilst they weren't the cheapest their service was second to none. I was very disappointed when they wouldn't even consider insuring the van.

Used Saga in the past and whilst they were cheap in Year 1 they were expensive the following year. An insurance co. aimed at older people trying to take advantage of older people????

Hi VXman,
And welcome to the motorhoming world,
and to this group in particular.
Insurance ? --, If you try "Caravan Guard"
as soon as you speak to them (on the phone)
You immediately know that they know the motorhome insurance business
they ask (and suggest) what cover you need (and do not need)
and the policy you end up with is tailored to your van and add on's
and foreign travel if wanted, travel to Europe can be added if you decide later on that you fancy a trip
but you have not paid for automatic cover which you may not use
they will not be the cheapest possible quote but what price peace of mind
You have nothing to lose give them a call
Good luck and enjoy your van and travels

Comfort - £340 for brand new 60K van. £65 for Euro Breakdown cover.

Seems good to me with no prior experience. Cheaper than my both my 10 yr old and 17 year old cars!!!

How's that generally?
That sounds good, could not match my quote from A-Plan Thatcham Branch but I think my issue is a storage location postcode issue. Try A-Plan anyway...

Richard-Denise - Saga do offer camper insurance and have done for several years. Also call centre open 7 days a week with minimal call waiting time - unlike some companies!

You're probably right. However, the benefit of ringing them and dealing with a live person rather than doing the "one-for-this two-for-that" dance heavily outweighed the slight additional cost. I also found that if they got too far ahead of the competition costs then they were amenable to negotiation. I'd probably use them still if they insured campervans and given the number in their market sector who have them I'm very surprised that they don't. I'd always thought that the rumbling noise in Folkestone was the trains in the Channel Tunnel, but perhaps it's Sidney de Haan turning in his grave - it's an opportunity I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have missed.

Most, possibly all insurance - and other services contract suppliers ,do this. See what the punter is prepared to pay and then negotiate if they challenge it. It's up to the individual to research and change supplier if they want to.

We used Saga for a few years but their prices suddenly went through the roof with no negotiation. We moved to Caravanguard and are now in our 4th year with them. They are easy to speak to on the phone and don't mither you with endless "surveys" and "tell us how we did today". Very reasonable too, £259 at last renewal.

I've been using AiB for some years and just renewed at a lower price than last time, beating the best price I could find elsewhere. I always find them competitive and the admin are very customer friendly too.
They have a deal with this forum so you can get a discount if you are a paid up member.

When I bought my first MH 3 years ago I struggled to get cover at a sensible price (most well over £1000 and CACC wouldn't even offer it) as I had no experience so NCD wasn't applicable for my other vehicles. I ended up with CAMC at £450 with recovery and overseas included. I now have 3 years NCD but CAMC are still very competitive and I am happy with them

Is the van parked somewhere not insured? if so GET IT DONE!!! for what you have paid £340 is not a lot tell them you have had a recommendation you may get a little extra discount they did with me because I just prepared and then on hand over (private sale) rang them and said start the policy please, the van was already insured with Comfort. it started from that moment. I then drove it back with a lovely overnight next to the Wye. they were still the best this year

And change your avatar to GOT ONE or similar have wonderful times :party2::party2:

THIS year my Comfort quote was higher than some others

BUT

on checking reviews as I'd never heard of one of the other cheaper ones every single review bar one said Don't touch with a barge pole, and the other had loads of add-on's to give me what Comfort does

So we renewed with Comfort for the fourth year just over £400 for 3L 6000miles and £30K - with full recovery UK and Europe and legal aid free Green Card too

We went with LV this year as we discovered that they were the underwriters of the CAMC insurance policy we had. We saved a significant amount on the renewal.

Slight thread drift for which apologies, but what is the benefit of CAMC membership if not to save money on things like this...? Surely being a member should benefit exactly this sort of thing.

Personally, I do not think that the CAMC saves you any money at all with their offers. We joined it when we were tuggers and did not have a clue on caravan life. The sites are expensive but, the overall standard of them is extremely high. With the exception of this forum, I think the CAMC and CCC are great places for any absolute novice to get started, particularly so for caravanners. When we got our MH a year and a bit ago we began by holing up on these sites. Then we found how flexible the MH life is, and we found this forum.
Keep safe and well 👍

Be aware that some of the cheap quotes that you get in comparison sites do not include windscreen cover. A big expense in a Moho.
Very true, particularly with an A-class. LV insure our cars so the MH was added to the policy. It all checked out as comparable to out CAMC quote with the exception the level of the contents insurance. The LV cover was much lower than CAMC here but, we are covered by our house insurance with extra cover in there for personal effects.

The cheapest quote - at a very reasonable £340 from Comfort seems very thorough and covers a lot of stuff I wouldn't have expected. Windscreen cover is same as your typical car policy. Replacement with a brand new vehicle of the same mode/spec if the cost of repair is over 60% of the value for 3 years is good. As are £5000 for personal processions

£55K. They seem to value it at market rate. It appears on the schedule as Fiat Motor Caravan not Adria. They have done our 3 vehicles for the last two years and, although no claims made, I have been happy with my dealing with them. I was on to the far end of this with them on the phone before I went with them. As they were the underwriter for my insurance policy with CAMC I wondered if they, CAMC, were getting an even better price and were simply jacking it up and adding a few bells and whistles?

We're with LV for the Caravan & Car, and whilst the premium for the latter soared this year, the quote for the m/home was extremely good value, because of the multi vehicle discount. £78.50 Premium for the 5 months to renewal, and then £216.86pa Annual Premium. So, for caravan, car & M/Home, I'll get about £5 change from £750. Or, will owe them £10 after they charge £15 Admin fee to cancel the caravan cover
