Good morning,,,

well that’s it then,,, over for another year!

it was the sunniest, brightest day here yesterday for ages,, amazing,, when I was a youngen you could guarantee the snow! But not now!! I wonder if it will come later on?

anyway, had a nice relaxing day, much the same as any other, eat some treats, watchedsome tv, got a call from jo baker, had a kip in the afternoon, yes it was ok!!

went over to a funsters this morning ( conal) to deliver him the generator, and pick up a couple of suitcases he let me have, brilliant, no traffic, no drama there and back in an hour! Easy,,,,,

I havnt got to panic about Helga, I’ve still got a few days left with her, so I will prob start packing tomorrow, gear that I don’t wear anyway, and I shall start throwing crap away,, I bet I find lots of stuff I don’t or didn’t need,, even in a smallish space like Helga!

I shall, of course, give her a good wash nearer the handover day, but the inside I will clean again when all my cupboards are empty!

I hope you all had a smashing day yesterday, and are enjoying your holiday,, Chat later, xxxx

Evening!!

well I got the two suitcases out, and started packing! I put my good clothes in the big one, then my good polo shirts and casual stuff in the smaller of the two,, now I need a few black bags for work gear, but I’m going to throw most of it away,,, I can’t believe the crap I’ve accumulated in Helga, stuff I will never or didn’t use, rubbish that seemed to be worth keeping, that I shouldn’t have!

I think it’s a natural condition of the human mind to keep shiiite!!!!!!

I have a rucksack with shoes in, that I havnt worn for 5 years,I found a brand new pair of reebok classic trainers, in the box, I forgot I had! I need another bag for shoes and shoe related items!

I’ve only emptied the wardrobe, and two cupboards,, god knows what I’ll find in the rest?

I have however found my internet booster that I bought when I was abroad, from the company on here,, it’s an iboost,, I think that was nearly a couple of hundred quid!
been used for two months,, and I’m buggered if I can even remember to set it up!

I may sell that, I was going to leave it, but after selling the generator, I may keep that as well,, so if any funster wants an iboost, with all the bits let me know!!

I have plenty of rubbish to throw, so I will get on now,, time for a brew,, chat later! Xxxx

Good morning,,,, Well I suppose it had to happen!!

I didn’t sleep very well last night,, all I was doing was thinking ‘ am I doing the right thing’?? selling Helga, and getting back into the traditional way of life? I’m hoping it’s just a glitch, but I’m not sure!

I had a message from a funster that just made me think!
my argument for keeping her is this,,,

I am going to start a bit of a business venture, that will run alongside my building, but for it I will need a workshop! Now I have looked about, and it seems that the lowest I can get a decent size workshop for is around £600 per month! Then I may or may not have rates bills etc! Now, even if I could afford both that and the flat, I would have to stay building for most of the time just to pay the overhead! Then would the new business be viable ????

now work is extremely important to me, and I have realised that I’m only happy when I’m working and challenging myself! But I’m not happy being a slave to anybody working and plodding on just to pay the bills!

if I take the flat, it will put the new business back,, maybe out of reach!

if I keep Helga, start the business I could keep Helga at the unit, and only really need to kip in her, which looking at the units I’ve seen, that wouldn’t be a problem!

can I have some opinions of what you Think,,, I’m really stuck, in my mind!!

I only have a few more days to make a decision, but I’m definable wavering!!

maybe it’s just because I’m a bit nervous about going back to bricks and mortar!

I’m struggling!!! cheers Xxxx

Difficult to make big decisions like that on your own!
Maybe try looking at your ‘future self’? Where would you like to be in 1/5/10 years time? How will you get there? Do you want to be tied to any particular lifestyle?
I usually get a big piece of paper and draw a line down the middle. Head each column Pros and Cons. Writing it down gets it out if your head!

Oh dear, Ian, afraid I can't help but what I will say is whatever decision you make, throw yourself at it wholeheartedly, no half measures, no what-ifs. Only your 100% commitment will do, I would say for at least five years to give anything a fair try.
Good luck and have courage, follow your gut instincts. (y)

For what it's worth, I think you're probably making the right decision for you Ian by getting yourself a flat.

Helga's been a great van for you but in a few years you might find you'd need to change her for a more up to date van and would you have the capital for doing that ?
As it is you can enjoy putting down some roots, get some cash in the bank and maybe a small van conversation for occasional trips.
You also seem to have lost your travel mojo recently so selling Helga seems a sensible choice.
Good luck and best wishes whatever you decide.

Hi Ian, my concern for your predicament is that going back to a 'Helga' might not be an option in the future as you will have no equity in a rented property and the money you are getting for her, even if you kept it all stashed away, would be difficult to find 'someone' as trusty and well looked after as Helga.

Difficult decision and although £95 a week for the flat doesn't sound too much it's nearly £6.,000 a year.

It’s a really hard decision. As I see it one of the main pluses of this flat is its brand new and the council will pick up the maintenance.
But, as has been said, you’re renting and it doesn’t build up equity or stability for the future. Areyour other outgoings more in a flat vs campsite fees? Council tax, electric, gas etc? The plus is it doesn’t tie you.
The workshop is expensive, you’ll have to do well to cover your costs but, from what you’re saying, it’s as much about you staying positive as about the income stream.

For what it’s worth, and I don’t know you, I think make reversible decisions for now and see how things pan out,
So you might decide to give the flat a shot, hang onto Helga, knowing you can sell her easily, take the workshop and see how it all goes. Give yourself 6-12 months then re-evaluate.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Der, bit thick today, nearly £5,000 a year.

Our thought, sell Helga, yes it's going to be hard. Buy a large van, sell the smaller one, to use for the business. Try the new life for a while if it doesn't work out, convert the new van whilst living in the flat and off you go again. Try to steer away from transits unless you can put good security system in it.
