Made a quick courtesy call to my motorhome insurer the other day to notify of a change of home address.
Call took approximately 3mins and after a few questions I was notified that it was not a problem and there would be no changes to the policy. All good I thought.
Then came the charge for changing the address on the paperwork ( which they don’t even post, just email ).
I realise very little is free these days and fully expected to pay around £20 or £25.
Oh how I laughed (NOT) when she said ‘that’ll 'just' be £72.71p to pay today !!!
I mean REALLY ? Just for an address change ?
I think I’ll be looking elsewhere come renewal day.
Maybe it’s just me but I truly felt I’d just been mugged !! Robbing b. . . . .

Rant over.

Did anything else change, like the place it was stored, or the insurance perceived "niceness" of the area, which is often distorted by a few big claims?

That doesnt sound like a ‘round’ figure for change of address charge. You’ve probably been charged also/for a different post code in a higher risk bracket (according to their claims computer program most likely).

I assume the charge related to admin for change during period of the policy and also any increase in ‘risk’ associated with new postcode. I don’t think it will simply be for admin time to type in a new address but also the change of risk involved.......

I would have pinned whoever to the back wall with a demand to speak to a manager.
In the likely event that one was not available, I would have demanded they send me a letter informing me of same and fired one immediately back, not only complaining about the exorbitant fee but pointing out that in lieu of them reducing or waiving that demand I would be taking my business elsewhere.
Name and shame, Mark.

I was told that there was no problem with the change of area etc. and the charge was for changing the address on the policy.
Only repeating.
If they considered things to be of greater risk etc. I could’ve understood the increase.
That’s why I felt the charge unbelievably excessive.

Insurers have a responsibility to treat customers fairly and for administration charges to be reasonable.

That charge doesn't sound a reasonable sum for the work involved simply changing an address online (no printing or postage involved).

It must be a higher risk area with the change if address
This is more than probable it’s not the change of address it’s the incidents that involve Police and Insurance Claims that occur in that area, you can check all this out online and it will show lots you don’t want to know.

Yes i had a brief spell of training at direct line(my abject failure with the computer sadly caused me to pack in) but i absolutely loved all the different reasons and whys and wherefore your insurance was worked out,i found it really fascinating, however when a fellow trainee said “ well if they dont know how to cut and paste ,they shouldnt be here”
i thought it was my time to bow out gracefully,i was getting left further and further behind, which was a shame cos ireally loved it
still dont know what cut and paste is
and have never used a computer 🤓

It's likely that the broker and the underwriter/insurer made admin charges but there's got to be more to it that that as they are usually 'rounded' figures, ie no odd pennies, so something else has been changed I suspect regardless of what you've been told.

It's to with decorating your front room with wallpaper. Everybody knows that.

Been with my insurance company for over 10 years and happy with what I pay.

Motorhome is in secure storage and no change. I moved house but stayed in same village with almost identical postcode. Gets phone call telling me that it’s £80 as I’ve changed address, but they’ve got it down to £30.

Great said I, been with you 10 years, never an issue, or a claim so please cancel my policy and goodbye.

Strangely enough they said we’ll waiver it. I said good, especially as I have to print docs at home and all you’re doing is literally changing 2 lines on a computer.

They do try don’t they.

Insurers do BUT brokers don’t. People like AIB, Comfort etc are not the insurer and are not bound by the same regulation.

I was under the impression that ALL extra charges HAD to be written in your T & C's otherwise they were unenforceable.

Coincidentally, I recently informed my insurer of a minor change in the data I had given them. I stated at the time of buying the policy that I would be making this change later. It was to do with temporary storage of the vehicle. When I informed them that the moho would be kept on my driveway from now on (instead of storage) they wanted to charge £35 to make the change on the policy. After much protestation, they dropped this charge but warned me this would be a one-off.
It can pay to protest. I'm sure they would have at least reduced your fee at some point.

P.S. Are you sure your new postcode wasn't in a "higher risk" area compared to your previous one.

Interesting point. So, would the ombudsman not take any role in a dispute with an insurance broker?

You need to name them, so the rest of us know
see the thread on Comfort last week on van recovery if taken ill abroad
and the replies the OP had, see the result from Comfort when several M H fun members
who were also with Comfort started ringing to check the information given to the OP
and the eventual result
If the rest of us know who the insurer is,
then we can avoid being mugged too.
