I have a REALLY annoying noise

John. Have you checked and changed the motherboard battery? It's usually a CR2032. Never had it on an HP. but my lighting desk that has an ATX board in it was chirping to tell me that the battery was low. Changed the battery, reset the BIOS setting and all has been was well since. If doing it, it's worth going into the Bios first and photographing all the settings screens to ensure you reset it as it was.
A good thought

Gimme 10 and I will report back

The other thing that's just come back into memory was a problem with a little chip cooling fan on an ASUS motherboard. (Not the main processor) The bearings were on the way out but it wasn't constant as the fan only ran sometimes I had to get that replacement from Holland, but to be fair, it's probably 15 years back.

Right.. good news and bad news
Nowt wrong with the BIOS, but while I had the case open I did give it a good hoover
Then fired it up
Noise happened about 10 minutges late ( it really is totally random )

I then did something I should proly have done to start with
Diconnected it from the web
Two hours and not a peep
Reconnected and within a very short time it is back
This is def a notification.. either a news item or similar, even though as far as I can work out I have EVERYTHING turned off

This might help John. Damned Edge is a PITA. Even if you think you have made Chrome, Firefox, Opera etc the default, Edge still gets in there.
Edge maintains a list of the websites for which you have accepted notifications. If you don’t find this behavior useful, you can disable notifications on a site-by-side basis. To do so, open Edge and select Settings and More (“…”) and then Settings. Then, select the View Advanced Settings button under “Advanced Settings” and then the Manage button under “Notifications.” In the Manage Notification pane that appears, you can toggle notifications by site. You can also right-click a site and choose “Delete” to remove it permanently.

You may well be on to something Robin
Never considered Edge as apart from using it once to download Chrome it has sat dormant ( or so I thought )

It seems the latest version of edge is a little different, but I did discover it had somehow decided I have about 40 'favorite' sites. Deleted the lot
See if that made a difference and if not go back in and see what I what else I can delete !

Have you had a look in Event veiwer?

Have you had a look in Event veiwer?
Yup... Nowt of any help has ever shown.. the only indication is a very brief rise in memory and cpu usage
No indication of what causes it...
I have literally spent hours watching individual app performance in the event viewer and nowt ever shows up
If it was regular it would be a bit easier.. but it is so random there could be hours between events.. then you get three or four in the space of ten minutes

I do not watch any BBC anyway mate :)

What was it about ?
A woman who could hear an annoying noise and didn't know what it was.

(It was boring... you didn't miss much). :)

I wonder, how many like me, have just turn on the TV guide on their telly and all it says in the slot is, No Information! 😡
Maybe cos it was sooo slow, Owen. Rubbish. Apple Pie is much more interesting. :)

OK... It IS NOT anything to do with Chrome.. Removed it. rebooted, even before I could do anything, the noise came
Next one to silence is Skype

You obviously have the microphone too close to the speaker, to cure it, you need to give it an oil and filter change.
I know about these things. 😄

In the accessibility settings there is an option to help deaf people by converting sound alerts into visual ones. I'm afraid I haven't tried it but if it is a notification I think you can chose to get the screen to flash. At least then it would be confirmed it is a notification that is annoying you.

There is an article about a similar situation at https://www.winhelponline.com/blog/find-application-making-sounds-in-background/
which suggests ways of tracking the culprit.

Ohh an option to flash on the screen as well as jangle my bits with a noise ! Bonis !!!
I do not suppose there is another option that makes the computer fart ??
Or maybe one that shoots small toxic darts at my scrotum, thereby covering all my senses :-)

Sorry David.. Could not resist.. IT IS THE NOISES IN MY HEAD MAKING ME DO IT

Seriously, thank you for the idea.. Trouble is, what you suggest only works for Windows notifications

And I THINK I have cracked it..
Aint gonna say owt for at least 12 hours more use, but in the last 7 hours, not a peep !!

Told you an oil and filter change would fix it but nobody listens! 😡

Wellllllllllll

Another 3 hours have past and still no noise

If it does not make an appearance by mid afternoon I will presume it is cured and will post on here what it was :-)

Just had a thought
Before I post what I believe it was, I shall reset it back to what it was to make sure the noise returns

OK folks.......
I do believe I have got the little bugger

t was Skype !!!!!!

I 'spose it should have been an early suspect, but as I have it set so it does not load at boot ( I fire it up when needed ) I dismissed it

We occasionally talk to friends in the US on skype, but the most usefull aspect is to be able to call normal phone lines, when we were is Australia a few years ago we had major money problems as TSB did an update and messed up their online banking, and I had to do a few urgent call to my bank to try and arrange money transfers.

I used to use it, but have moved to other platforms but have not been asked to use it for years last time was to my dad and he's been dead for about 7 years

Interesting. Any idea what it was trying to alert you to?

And, how come its doing anything if you have turned off autostart? Naughty!

My primary means of communication for business. Everyone has it or access to it.
Not everyone can use any of others or refuse to for various reasons. Skype is the lowest common denominator when it comes to instant and voice chat without any frills.

Hmm that is odd. I have it running on my phone, computer(s) and laptop and don't get any noises...

Interesting, I have been asked to use a few different platforms recently by larger organisations and both were rubbish

However recently a large organisation had changed over to it I had forgotten until now.
but as I didn't use as when we needed to communicate we used teams and Skype was not considered.

I'm going to look to see if I still have an account

Tell me about it.. No idea what it was doing (maybe chat alert as when I do open it I find a shed load 'Linda from Kansas would like to chat' type things.. I just delete them 'en-masse'
