Long story short. Have a series 8 Ducato, which has been back to Fiat on 3 occasion, trying to sort the engine management light keep comming on, and has been back in again this week, and they have now put a new dpf filter on it (under warranty), so hopefully will now sort it.
Anyway, as it is comming up 12 months old, I ask them to change the oil and filter. Yes, I know it’s 2 year servicing etc, but I am of the old school where I like to change the oil every 12 months whatever.
anyway, collected the vehicle yesterday afternoon and paid the bill for the oil change. She must have seen my jaw drop, £307.14. £152.90 + vat =£183.48 was the labour part.
Now as the vehicle was already on the ramp/over the pit etc, how long would it actually take to drop the oil, change the filter and re-fill.
I’m all for paying a fair price and the going rate, but came away somehow feeling that someone was pi@@ing down my back and telling me it was raining😉🤣
Just thought it was a little on the high side. Certainly won’t be taking it back for its 1st big service.

It probably equates to 1.5 hrs labour.

Check the size of wrench required

Drain oil
WATCH ALL THE OIL DRAIN
Replace sump plug with new washer
Fill oil filter with oil
Remove oil catcher.

Fill engine with oil.
Put tools away ,
Clean up.
Check dipstick oil level.

1.5 hrs looks to be OK.
Plus Top price for oil and filter..

Need a new tech if it takes 1.5 hours to do an oil change. 30 mins tops.

£307.14 for oil and filters , oil £50 a gallon so £250, oil filters £10, pollen filter £20 so what cost £220 + labour?
Perhaps I am living in the past but it does seem a bit steep.

Or open bonnet, remove dipstick, insert suction tube, draw up old oil, change filter and refill with fresh oil. Half an hour tops.

Seems very high for just an oil change ? Thing to do is get quotes from local garages like we do. Oil and filter costs around £70 to buy from europarts
Phil upmesump
PS thinking about this, they get paid less for guarantee work from Fiat than they charge you. Probably trying to recoup the difference ?

Main agents do seem to have different charging schemes to competitive garages. Choose services by recomendtion whenever possible and get the work done properly.

I have a Ford Ranger and the oil change has to be completed in 10 minutes to prevent the oil pump from draining. just had it done Oil change 7.5 litres + filter + mot, £115.
And the oil is removed by a pump. No need to remove sump plug.

As an aside, anyone recommend a dipstick oil removal pump. Seems to be a lot less messy than cracking the sump plug.

It's not a Fiat dealer but my last service cost me £288 Inc Vat.

2008 Ducato.

Replaced oil, fuel, air and pollen filters + changed the oil.

As well as general checks they also removed all the wheels, checked the brakes and lubricated all suspension linkages.

The series 8, doesn’t have a dip stick, so I guess at least you know the oil has been drained down.
I understand that you are going to pay top price at a Fiat Professional garage, but just thought at it was already on the ramp having some warranty work done, an oil & filter change should take no time at all. Silly me😉😉

Do my own.. was fed up paying inflated garage prices for what is a relatively easy job.
I also know it's been done properly.

for those who mentioned sucking the oil out.. I believe the 2.2 series 8 doesn't have a dipstick..?

talking of dipsticks...

way back in 1972 me and my girlfriend took our first camping trip abroad to France, heading for St Tropaz ..it was thee place to go in the 60s ..

I had a new 1275 MG Midget, we set off with a Blacks Good Companion tent, double air bed and two sleeping bags..

On route when we stopped at one of the service stations, a guy came out to fill up with fuel, ( as they did in those days ,) After filling he pointed to the bonnet, I presumed he was asking if I wanted the oil checked.. .. I said yes please. (in my best French)

minutes later he rolled out a rig with a pump and put a probe down the dipstick hole, sucked out the oil.. and re filled it.. all done in less than 10 mins. apparently back then this was quite routine on autoroute service stations ...never seen this before. but was happy it had been done, it was long trip from Glasgow to St Tropaz

Fabulous trip that whetted my appetite for more travel abroad..

Camping in Switzerland en route home

FIAT Professional (North East Truck and Van, York branch) quoted me £324 incl VAT for an oil and filter change last year. You got off lightly!

Just ring up & ask for a price for oil & filter change for your model. If not what you paid ask why?

It should take 15 -20 mins at most. That's how long it would take me lying underneath it. Access to drain plug and filter is very easy. They are taking the piss. I'd ask why it takes a trained mechanic with all the tools and ramps that long.

It’s because they’re “professionals “…😎
