How do you check your gas bottle levels?

The dealer/gas fitter is cutting a hole in my gas locker to fit the gaslow inlet valve, apparently its is illegal s in some countries to open your gas locker to fill, anyone know more about this?
Best to fit the inlet in the sill whatever you do don't let them fit it in the gas locker door, very dangerous as the hoses get kinked and split with opening and closing the door.

This is a myth. We have toured many countries and have never been prevented from filling the Gaslow and our filler is within the gas locker. Finding a lpg station is of course another matter.
We have been refused in Portugal until I pointed at my external filler and told her it was a tank.

this system has NEVER let me down unlike the stupid Gaslow gauge that seems to guess ?

Are you aware that the Gaslow gauge only comes into effect when the cylinder is half empty - thus giving greater accuracy just when you need it?

Ian

Our gaslow gauge drops to empty when half full. It's still a useful indication though.

I will never need to worry or guess again, I am now a Moreko owner, precision and convenience is the way to go, no more scrambling about in lockers for my wife, I can now check the tanks via the App :D2

Our filler is on a bracket just inside the door, never had a problem filling up. I suppose we'll get a jobsworth sooner or later mind ?

As Lenny HB says, put in the skirt if it’s possible?

I will definitely as the question but space looks limited, door seems to be part of the skirt.

In the skirt to either left or right of the locker that looks like a plastic skirt so you may need to brace it with a small strut back to the chassis as gas filler hoses are heavy.

Here is mine.

Will it go either side? It shouldn’t be too much of a problem if there’s space to fit the filler cap

Ahhh Lenny HB beat me to it??

I was given the Truma gas level check as a gift, brilliant piece of kit,100% accurate, would I buy one at £65, no, why, because its pretty obvious when your low, just change over and take it on the chin that you might be exchanging a bottle with 10% still in it.

My wife is popping in and looking at it later today as she has never seen it, will tell her to stick her head under and see what is there, she's a bit hefty but could still get her head under, maybe get her to take some pictures (y)

I've always put them in the most convenient position for use - normally waist-height. However the last two I've put inside the locker & have had no issue filling (UK only at present). If anyone did refuse a fill I'd go somewhere else.

As Lenny said we have one of these works well and tells you when first bottle is empty.????

As

Remote indicator DuoC with EisEx
Supplements the standard display in the cylinder compartment and indicates the operating status of the gas cylinder also inside the vehicle. Integrated EisEx regulator heating.
  • Read the status of the gas cylinders from inside the vehicle
  • See the operating status of the gas cylinders (empty/full) and activate EisEx
  • Suitable for DuoControl CS. Note: Black regulators of the new generation are compatible only with the new generation of remote indicator DuoC
Technical data
  • Supply voltage: 12 V
  • Power consumption, summer operating mode: 1.5 mA
  • Power consumption, winter operating mode with EisEx: 160 mA

I've just had a look at this. It has a microswitch sender on the back of the changeover unit that I might be able to replicate for less than £115?. Thanks both for pointing me in the right direction.

In continual use; after a while, you know when you'll run out, I can guess to the day when we'll need to refill. But this is much harder to guess if there are weeks/months between trips. The best way is, as others have said, keep one bottle off so you need to manually need to switch over then you know you need gas soon.

That is an issue with some. They have the "Auto changeover system" and only know they are out of gas when the second bottle expires. IMV keeping one shut off is the way to go?.

Dual gasit/gaslow bottles with auto changeover valve but one bottle turned off. Refillable, no having to swap bottles in the cold/rain and don't worry about running out.

Many years ago. I had a Lunar Caravan with an access hatch in the front of the `van Interior. If it went off I could just reach in and open the other valve, without going "out into the cold". Probably Illegal now!!.

On my new gaslow system they are fitting an auto changeover valve, should I say I want a wifi or bluetooth one so I can switch when one is empty, don't know even if they do these type of valves.
Get a manual changeover, an auto changeover is just a way of making you run out of gas.
One of mine was getting low on the highly innaccurate alugas guage so I manually switched to the other bottle yesterday afternoon and filled up this morning 19.2L so there was about 3L left in the first bottle. You dont have to wait till one is completely empty before switching over, it doesnt have to run out in the middle of the night.

This is where my filler is mounted. As its in the body, though still within the gas locker, it is much stronger and needs no bracing to hold the weight of the pump filler.

Note cunning labelling to imply it is for engine use without actually being untrue.
My gauges (alugas) reading full because I have just filled up.

Filled by an attendant as is common in Spain . He had nothing to say.

I also have the Truma Bluetooth unit, nice little app on the phone that also lets you control the heating and hot water

We use an infra red thermometer. About a fiver on ebay. Must be using reasonable amount of gas, oven or heater. By checking temp up side of cylinder you will see a distinct change in temp where level of liquid lpg is. About 2 deg C.

will not work if not using gas.

works on metal and plastic cylinders.

I've been told feel gas bottle from top to bottom, when cooking and where it gets colder indicates gas level..... Working so far. Smudger55

Hi newbie here. Why do you need to pretend it's fuel for the van rather than gaslow?

You don’t need to it’s an external fill point for LPG we have never had a problem filling ours all over Europe and don’t have any labels.?
