How do folks afford motorhomes

35 yrs service for Queen and Country...working with the dregs of society nobody wants to think or talk about...being regularly verbally abused.. spat at..buckets of excrement and urine thrown at me...hours upon hours of sitting around in helmet and body armour waiting to go and deal with someone high on drugs who has been slashing their own wrists and getting covered in their blood...the forgotten service as they call it...retired in my 50's with a generous pension..but regularly told by folk how lucky I am...
Thank you for doing the job not every one wants to do 👍 enjoy your MoHo

We always buy in Germany, couldn’t afford the prices here. Exchange rates have pretty much been in our favour though on all our vans.
Agree our three Hymers were all bought in Belgium & our final caravan in Germany.

Not one bit of my motorhoming enjoyment is due to the cost of my motorhome.
Mine is 27 years old and been utterly reliable for ten years. It owes me nothing, I've no concern about its resale value or the fact that it's sitting on my drive unused for long periods, or marks left from stickers, or scratches from narrow lanes, or mud on the carpet, or faded graphics, or temperamental sophisticated electronics, or jammed electrically operated beds, tables or steps, or marks on the worktops, or lending it to my kids..............

When lazing beside the Loire watching the ducks my glass of St Emilion tastes the same as everyone else's.

Same here, cars do absolutely nothing for me. A little reliable economical thing that nobody will look twice at. (8 year old 1.0L 60bhp VW UP 😑👌)

Still each to their own, my ex workmate spends 40k on the top of the range transit vans 🥴 it's his money 😊
Wish I was like you I really don’t want to know what I have spent on vehicles over the years. But what the heck I have been in a position to enjoy them look after them and then when I sell them I know the next owner has a well maintained car. Of course there is a man theory that says who dies with the most toys wins…….I do have some toys but don’t think I will win any competitions lol.

I send Judy out on the game.... (y)

Only Monday to Friday, though...

I do insist on a proper Roast lunch Sat & Sunday....(y)
Do you mind if I share your secret that you told me, well I will anyway!! Judy came home at 3am one morning, you asked her how much she had earned for this shift, £150:50 she replied, which stingy punter gave you the 50p I asked, all of them she replied😂

I’m sorry to see that some of the remarks on this thread have caused upset, but as usual, I can come out with a great Quote

“You can please all, some of the time, & can please some, all of the time, but not all, all of the time!
Ok! which smart ass is going to tell me who said it😂!
& before i get my k***s chewed!
No offence meant!!!!!

It goes back to what we said earlier
“To each his own”.

Just don’t park your big flash Mo Ho, to near my PVC, cause I like to get plenty of sun when i’m laid out, showing off my manly torso.🙈
I’ve just eaten the biggest Sunday roast possible, & now i’m going to do just that, in my garden hammock.

I hope it doesn’t offend! NOT!
Happy Easter one & all.
I love our little band of gypsies, (Oops, I feel another offended person aproacheth) !

Take care.

Hard work for me.

brought up on one of the largest council estates in the UK but soon as I left school went to work.
Not unusual for me to do 16-17 hour days 7 days a week when I was younger.

I don’t feel one bit embarrassed about having an expensive van as I know I’ve worked for it😁😁

We enjoy looking at the swanky motorhomes with their own little car and matching accessories. And we enjoyed converting a second hand transit, even without recording every detail and posting it on Youtube. And we enjoy going away in it, even if we are the dreaded people whose van door goes shooonk clunk late at night when we take the dogs out. We've met quite a few nice friendly people and been welcomed by all the site owners/managers we've met so far. So it's all good. If I won the lottery though, I'd definitely buy a new van and have it all done out to my design.

Just going back to the OP though.... aren't you just the teensiest bit amused when someone's very, very expensive bit of kit goes wrong? Because it's nice to know it happens to everyone. ;)

My slant on this is not how do some people find the money for a motor home, but how do some find the time to go away in their motor home....there are so many posting various Wordle threads and dog pictures, do they actually get away? Just asking

Surely what you buy is relative to what you can afford be it house, car, motorbike, motorhome, boat, woman, man, +
Actually I think in a lot of cases it’s what you are actually prepared to spend on a vehicle that is after all a depreciating asset, or usually is.

This is an interesting one, often its the larger more expensive asset that appears to depreciate faster and greater than a more modest purchase, however that shouldn't stop people investing in the more expensive asset because a) they have the resource to do so b) its what they want and no one should judge them. Not really, that was my point, I always get my posts misconstrued for some reason, lack of schooling probably :(
No I was concerned that someone had suddenly got to fork out 11 grand for a new engine and wondered how they could suddenly afford it, I couldn't.
And the fact that it was worth up to a hundred grand meant it has really got to be done whereas mine would be scrap and probly worth more in parts.

For sure the more you pay the more you can lose even if the % depreciation is the same but at the moment our is most likely worth more than we paid for it 2 years ago, yes we all have different priorities of course.

There's a lot of nice people on here falling into the traps of being judgemental of others or needing to justify their own circumstances.

It's OK to have nice things, it's also OK to be less well off. It's OK to spend big if you've got the resources, it's also OK to be more thrifty, whether you have the resources or not.

IT'S OK!

No inheritance
No lottery win
No Mortgage, having paid it off.
Always (apart from 1 year) been employed and worked shed loads of overtime to pay for things
Last bought a car 13 years ago and it was brand new, for £4,500 (scrappage deal) and still going strong.
Got rid of Sky, gave up smoking, dont go to pub, havent taken her out for a meal in 30+ years (unless on holiday), never bought her a birthday present, valentines card, anniversary xmas etc. Never bought anyone a card.
Pension and inheritance is the retirement plan as I only get about 3 months a year holiday in this job.
Wife gave up work 5 years ago as a school dinner lady.

We may not have earnt a lot but we spend it (or not) wisely.
Worked hard if I could not afford things we did without until we could pay cash.only debt was mortgage, only had two children as we agreed that’s all we could afford as no such thing as benefits 50+ years ago.
Never had sky,but we went on camping holidays every year, worked our way to newer caravan then sold them to pay for home improvements.
Then last august after wife getting over cancer we said sod it opened up the piggy bank and purchased our new florium motorhome .

Not about the money for us more about the way we choose to go on holiday.
We used to go away maybe twice a year wouldn’t get much change out of £8k especially if we were taking the kids!!
We’d also go away for long weekends in a cabin/cottage somewhere which started to become increasingly expensive.
So 2019 we bought our first MH initial outlay was a concern but we can go away a lot more and it seems to cost less (even though it probably doesn’t). Used some of our cash free allowance on the pension which I have now paid back (still working)!
We can now go away when we want and take the dog!!

Only thing we have ever insisted on is that if we are spending all our holidays in a MH it has to be as comfortable as home 👍

Sounds a lot like us. Florium is also a very nice motorhome.

Anyway, i wanted a garage in my MH to stuff a scooter in but alas not to be. A compromise.
See post #1
But it has been interesting.

Given we are on motorhome number 18 we must have lost many thousands over the last 45 years. However compared to the priceless memories we have made we really don’t care!
