How busy is it in Spain this year?

We spent last night on a motorhome parking area at Velez Rubio. We've hardly ever seen other motorhomes there before, but last night it was full, and overflowing.

If inland is full, we dread to think what the coast will be like.

Watching this with interest as we’re heading down at the start of February we’re 9.5 Mtrs, last year started to be a pain as every where that accepts that size were fully booked, we’ve booked 2 weeks at one place, we had only been for the first time last year and want to travel around still, don’t mind heading inland but not if the temperature drops significantly.

I was there for 2 weeks in March. Plenty of room on the campsite near Barcelona.
Plenty of room on the 5 aires I overnighted on too.
I believe that from February onwards many Northern Europeans are making their way home from Spain - thus freeing up a bit of space.

Its seems pretty weird to me that Aires at the coast were packed with large (mainly German) vans. Many appear happy to be staying in 'car park' conditions. Meanwhile a few 10s of km inland , where IMHO it is more scenic and certainly less hectic, site are deserted during the week. However later in the year it would be expected to get colder inland, so would become a less attractive option.

I remember that last year at this time, there were lots of reports of Spain being overcrowded with motorhomes.

Is it still the same this year?

We're not heading out there until February, but I like to start my dreaming early🏖.

Would particularly like to know how things are in Aguilas 😍.
We are at LaManga Murcia and there is plenty of space although there are many more German and French down here this year we are definitely outnumbered due to the 90 day rule as it is hardly worth the cost of travel to come for only 90 days. This is my 21st year witering in Spain and the last 2 have Shown how much Spain is losing.

That's our thoughts exactly. Everyone else wants to be on the coast, where they are creating major problems with the residents living there.

We always go inland, and have done so for more than 20 years. But our preferred spots inland are now becoming full.

Where, and how it will all end, won't be in our best interests 😥, I'm sorry to say.

You really think Spain is losing out, I've already stated that for the first three-quarters of this year Spanish Tourism is up 13%
Most of Murcia was rammed last year and are getting that way again this...
Just travel 50 km away from the Med Coast and ask how the changes have affected local business, Campsites and other trading establishments.....They wouldn't have a clue what it was or what you are talking about..
The Spanish economic situation is just fine and growing faster that some EU countries...

I was there for a month up till last week and it was manic - I’ve never seen so many motorhomes at this time of year!

Thanks Matt, we’ve been trying to advance book through M&CC without success, our length is logged excluding a lot of the sites, then there’s a lot fully booked and a number that can take 8.2m looking for 14nights minimum. How do you find your sites Matt?

By choice we love Andalucia. It is getting busier but new sites are opening every year and continue to offer better facilities. Our answer to overcrowding is to leave early and stop early. Only failed once, in Torox.

I’d skip M&CC personally, great in the U.K, but euro sites are most certainly not of a great standard having stayed at 3 over the last 2 months. If you have an ASCI card, they have a fantastic App, which has good sites on, that said simply googling areas and finding g sites works equally as well. Where abouts in Spain are you looking at?

The only people losing out is us British with the stupid restrictions caused by you no what.Spain was busy with many french German and many other nationalities the last few years. We have just returned from 2 months in Italy and believe me there no spare seats at restaurant's or boat trips

Like jumar jumartoo I am absolutely amazed by the sheer amount of spanish motorhomes out & about at this time of year. Many are obviously new owners but it also appears that the majority have now realised that they can actually go away every weekend as well as week days , whereas before the vast majority of them would only be using them for 3 or 4 weeks in summer & maybe some skiing in winter. Now they are out & about constantly.

We are going in March, hoping the lot there now will be on way home ! (Not referring to Funsters of course)
We will be one of the 'lot' returning home in March 🤣
Always used to turn up on the doorstep at Bolnuevo and have a choice of pitches. Not any more. Couldn't get on this year.

We just finished our drive back to Spain and routed via Germany. The majority of the vans heading south are German. They book on a year on year basis so it is really hard to find a spot for any length of time without booking. Normally we have our slot reserved in Torrox Costa, but have had to cancel this year for personal reasons. We are already booked for next year now. We stopped at Camping Didota, Oropesa del Mar, north of Valencia for one night, and they still have a hew slots available but there are a lot of long termers already there.

True.
And I'm one of those (well, weekend user, as I have to work) :giggle:
After the pandemic, the explosion of new motorhome users is been huge here (I guess also in the UK?), and I'm talking about locals like me, not only tourists.
This means everything must to adjust to accommodate everyone, the local motorhomes and the fellow tourists motorhomes.
And this also means problems for everybody, including the local residents, like jumar said.
There's also an increase in undesirable behaviours from users not knowing/respecting the laws. And that affect us all.
Because I'm a local user of a motorhome (and a newbie), but also a local resident.
I want to be optimistic and I want to think that it's all will self adjust, but not without the help of everyone involved (local users, foreign users and authorities).
So, this way, we can all enjoy this nice piece of land

In the northern half I found things surprisingly busy, but in large part that is because a lot of sites close ,for example at Blanes. Perhaps more coastal sites might decide it's worthwhile in future.
I can't see many inland sites doing that so expect to have to continue relying on aires or parkups on transit.

This afternoon, we are on an official motorhome area at Cullera, just off the motorway from Murcia to Granada (on Google the A-92N).

So far, on a well reviewed area, we are three. Us (SP reg motorhome), one Dutch reg motorhome and a French registered campervan.

Where have the rest gone? To the coast, I expect. With the rest of the sun loving hordes!

We’re renting an apartment in Almuñécar for a month, but thinking of bringing the van for October to November next year for a change and tour Spain. But reading some of these posts sounds like it will be difficult to find places to stay. We like to stay on small sites and mix in some Aires and stopovers.

TheMachMan

We’ve been touring up and down the coast of Spain for approx 8 weeks and up to now not had a problem with finding places to stay in our 8.8mtr MH 👍

This is how busy lovely Manola was this morning. Don't think there's anyone in the caravan actually.

This afternoon I looked at availability for Bonterra for January, no availability.
