I need to get a new hose. I only used mine once last year, and it split first time, but we’ll do more sites this year. What kind do people use, and what length is a good compromise between it being useful, but still easily portable and not much faff?

A couple of lay flat hoses, and a couple of extending hoses squished into a small bag. I hated using the extending hoses till I bought an inline on/off adapter so I can extend the hose, turn the water off, with the hose now in the extended mode and it acts like a normal 30m water hose

I and a Seagull water filter system which filters bacteria and viruses so am relaxed about using hoses.

Brunner Triple core flat hose in food grade plastic that works coiled on the reel available from e bay. Great
..just remember that there will be water in the hose when you pack it away
We carry one of these, although not often needed. Advantage as stated, don't need to unwind to use, and when coiling up, you don't need to squidge the water out. We've a flat tray to carry it in.

We used to have one, but found it very slow indeed to fill up our 120l tank. Got embarrassing with a queue behind at motorhome points and Aires.

Not my experience but I wasng there behind you in the queue!...lol::bigsmile:

I carry two expanding hoses, one is useful if the tap is on the wrong side and a 6ft food grade hose to fill up if I can get close to the tap.

There will probably be a day that I wish I had one but never in 8 years so far if we carried everything we needed once in every 10 years or so we would never move!
Our compromise “emergency water” is a roll up bag type water carrier. Takes 10 litres. Wouldn’t be fun filling the water tank - but it takes zero space and could be a life saver!

Three 25m roll up lay flat hoses, and two 60m food grade ordinary 1/2” type hoses on garden reels. :gum:

Don't forget a selection of tap fittings!

Expanding hose for me, now on my second one. Also have one for the garden.

You like it piped in direct from the nearest reservoir I am guessing? Or you’ve stayed an French sites where the only tap 200m away?

Sumfink like that. It’s a faff moving the motorhome and so much easier to unroll a hose. Fortunately, with an 85g tank I only have to fill it every other day.:Eeek:

I have a short length of expanding hose for when close to a tap. It's surprisingly light and compact. At home I use the garden hose. I also have two cheap plastic watering cans. Two (not to match my forum name, nor in case of theft but) to reduce the number of trips and provide balance when carrying. Sometimes the tap will not accept a screw fitting but I can always get a can under, even if it's down the spout. Cans also defeat the rule of Sod: that, no matter how long your hose(s), the tap will always be a few centimetres further away than you can get to.
I don't worry about food grade as I don't intend to eat them.

I have one of these, it takes up very little space and doesn't have to be unrolled all the way to use. (its made of quite hard plastic and has 3 bores). The only drawback is that it takes longer to fill the tank, compared to a garden hose, due to the small bores.

I always seem to get the van within 10 feet of any tap. This 5 metres hose is seldom needed. Don't forget a selection of adapters

We have a bottle of antibac in the box - even before Covid - I always drench the tap and the hose couplings before I set up. By the time I’m set up it’ll have cleaned any beasties off. (For best effect it needs around a minute)

We use a 10litre food quality plastic container that we fill the van, so we know how much water/Weight that is in the van before we travel. So no problem with distance to the tap, it just gives us some good exercise carting the container that we use as drinking water as well. We do not drink from the inboard tank it is used only for washing etc. We did use at the start a small 3 pipe of food quality, but it was soon ditched as it took too long to fill the tank and now it languishes in the garage at home.

I started with a 10m flat hose but found it would often kink by the filler. I now have a 10m food grade hose which fills a lot quicker (not much more expensive than a garden hose) and still carry the flat one for when the tap is a bit too far away. I do also have a 10L watering can to save moving to a tap.

Expandable hose. It's lasted about 4 years and I'd replace it straight away if required. We use a small mesh laundry bag to store it, which allows it to dry out, and takes up very little space. We also carry a length of garden hose just in case if required. As previously mentioned plenty of fittings!
We refill 2L water bottles for drinking water but for everything else use the tank water.

I meant to buy expanding hose, but I seem to have bought a steel one (it looked like an expanding hose, I thought it was jut silver coloured!). So we’ll see how that goes. I like the fittings, but I might to need check out how to fit them on to french taps! Another bit of problem solving to do!

We have two X hoses, and connect them together if and when needed. To solve the issue with the water left in the hose I've watered the grass in the field next door or site plants, if the warden gives the ok.

Watering can,,I threw the hose out.BUSBY.
You must enjoy walking and carrying 10kg on one arm?. At 2 gall a trip, that would have been a minimum of 30 double journeys to fill the R-V.! :giggle: (8 Aquaroll barrels, and not "full" then!) Even the Rapido would be near to 12?.
10m and 3m food grade
The only time I had a "food grade" hose was when we where living "on-site" during a self build and I kept the hose connected to the Mains R-V "Shore" connection. The amount of time water, most of which is chlorinated anyway, is in contact with a cheap hose is seconds on it way to the tank. Any thing left in the hose (Expanding Type) is flushed before it`s put in the tank.

I currently carry 3 x 30M expanding hoses. but that was initially dictated by the fact that when Marshalling Festivals, once you where parked and working it was difficult to move, and the nearest tap was always 100 yard away!.

But I don't have a big one like you😀😀.. 14 litre can so about 6 trips to the tap if I am empty...BUSBY.

I thought the point of a watering can was to top up, rather than fill from empty?

I wouldn't let my wife use the Jacuzzi in our camper if I had to fill it with a watering can lol

During lockdown on a small site located far from the tap. We purchased a 50 mtr reel hose. I guess we can now park a good distance from rally and THS taps and close to hedges for the grey waste hose.
I fixed the reel to garage floor and it extends and winds in very easily. The many expandable hoses over the years have sprung leaks.

When I no longer need to take the big cold box for the children’s snacks, I am absolutely fixing reels for hoses and cables. I may look at it sooner if I can think of something clever. (Got to get the bikes sorted first)
