Guys and gals I need your input.

Interesting thought if they won’t bring it back based on valuation do they then pay you the repatriation cost they would have spent if it was a few £ higher value 🤔

I have been following a few similar threads and realise the insurers have no interest in bringing it back if the customer stands all the costs to repair where it is

Best of luck getting an option that works best for you chaser 👍🙏

If LV feel the van isnt worth repatrionising they shouldnt have taken Chasers premium. He has probably paid the same policy as a 100k van so they should just swallow it or pay him the market value of the van, I bet if they had to do that the van would be on the next low loader

I thought breakdown cover in EU was about getting your vehicle to a garage where the vehicle can be assessed and repaired. LV have done that. If it can’t be fixed in a reasonable timeframe then they either fly you home and then one person back OR if that is not viable, they will on occasion repatriate. I think repatriation is not elective, as in you can’t choose this option.

All cost for repair, as with any breakdown, are borne by us the vehicle owners.

Have the insurance said that? I've missed that post if they have . That would then pose another problem sadly.

Bit like being held over a barrel then though which is a shame.

Insurance themselves wouldn't be keen to spend the value of the vehicle to repair the vehicle.
Yes said that today but if that is the case we are going to offer to pay the difference.

The trouble too is, that the repatriation costs are more than the value of the vehicle, sadly, unless a space on an existing return load can be found. :(

Good luck with it all chaser. 👍

Cheers,

Jock. :)

We paid two grand for the old 1989 Euramobil we bought 15 years ago.
We had a rear wheel bearing fail 9 years ago a little south of Le Mans coming back from the Circuit des Remparts at Angouleme and we were repatriated, so in our case it down to the cost of repairs verses repatriation not the value of our van at the time.

Not that I am aware of Tam, but it must surely form part of their assessment as to whether to repatriate or not.

I'm with chaser, ie, I'd want it bringing home, knowing that I could get it repaired much easier and cheaper.

On that Roger, I totally agree with you, however my experience of policy wording, has often mentioned the value of the vehicle to be taken into account, where repatriation is considered.
Twice we've been repatriated, but the value of the MH on each occasion was over 20K.

Edited, after having read @chasers quote below.

Ahh I missed that post Charlie. That's a bit crap. Are you sure you couldn't get someone to drive your low loader over to collect it? Or see if insurance may meet you half way and recover it to the ferry terminal you could then have it collected on this side yourself

The daft thing is we have a low loader at home but wouldn't dare coming to France with it else we would probably end up with two to fetch back
I'd bring it over & collect your van .

No

THIS^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ It is all wrong .Even though I have full breakdown cover with my spanish policy that covers nearly everything I still pay for ADAC as I can stipulate that I want the vehicle repatriated

I'm not mechanically minded but we had an ambulance previously (called Eeyore ... think about it :giggle:). The clutch pressure plate spring failed which caused it to loose all but 3rd gear, we somehow managed to drive it back from Hawes to Cottingham just using 3rd gear and not stopping at all on the way - creeping slowly up to traffic lights etc although the ones for road works going up Market Weighton hill were a close call!

Could it be a pressure plate spring failure that needs sorting rather than a new gear box being needed?

To me the value of the van to the owner is more than what it can be sold for in this case .
What about the satisfaction of having built it yourself, the many trouble free holidays and the enjoyment it he’s bought. If you repair or scrap you are not going to replace it for 10k.
I would try at get it back as like air good things in life you cannot replace one thing that has a sentimental value with another similar one

I'm glad I have never got sentimental about vehicles. It must have saved me a fortune over the years.

So what’s happening Charlie, hope your sorted. 👍

He's probably enjoying getting totally sozzled whilst looking at the view from the balcony! :giggle:

They still don't know whether they can mend it next week or not.
Surely if it can't be sorted in a reasonable timescale they HAVE to repatriate you.

That would still be my main goal Charlie, get it home and sort it yourself .

I'm sure they'd at least recover you to the ferry terminal .. get back to UK and make own arrangements to get it from the coast to your place.

I know that but I can't get falling out with them or we will get nowt, we are just sitting about here now , keep ringing them and they just keep saying they don't know but the longer it drags on thecloser to the return date so they will have to say soon.
Think we are coming home on a plane on Wednesday.

This whole thing has been like a disaster movie.
I will not be coming back to France in a motorhome ever again. I will update this at a later date.
Sorry you are having such a difficult time, hopefully you will turn a corner soon

I'm truly sorry to learn that Chas. I hope you and yours can sort things out to your best advantage. Having been down this route twice previously in France, I totally sympathise and understand the upset and emotions you'll be experiencing, as I'm sure Oscar Albi & Elaine will too, after their disaster breakdown. :(

Good luck. (y)

Jock. :)

When I joined Mhf someone said just deal with it. This has been priceless advice although being stuck is upsetting. It can be resolved

Take a deep breath and a step back lock the emotions in a draw and think logically what you want and deal with it .

If you lo e the van get it fixed you won't buy another for that price. Check the insurance may even pay for you to collect it.

Don't forget your travel insurance will Cover the loss of your holiday.

So you should get back ferry costs and any bookings.

Good luck keep calm

I hope all works out well chaser - a worst nightmare, breaking down abroad. If you want to save the van, forget insurance, so you control what happens - get it repatriated yourself, fly back and sort it out at home?

So sorry to read this Charlie - you seemed very pleased with LV initially, are they the source of the frustration or is it the garage??? You & Julie are so much better equipped to deal with issues than a lot of us.
