3 years 30,000 miles UK and Europe.. Campsites and off Grid.
Any suggestions for good sites for winter breaks that are near an interesting city. Closer the better but a few miles out is ok for cycling - or on a good bus route.

I'm aware of Bristol, Winchester and York but other ideas would be good.

Canterbury - stay on the aire
+1 for Canterbury. Stayed there this weekend for the third time.
New Dover Road park and ride, it costs £4 per day, so £8 for overnight. Water and grey/black waste disposal on site.
There are toilets when the main building is open.
You can use the shuttle buses with the ticket, and after the last shuttle back (about 730pm I think) any of the regular buses leaving from bays D1 and D4 will take you back to the car park.
It feels safe and there have always been many MHs there on the times we have stayed (there is plenty of space).

More towns should do this as it encourages spending in the town!

How about Liverpool?

We've overnighted on the prom at West Kirby a couple of times and used the fantastic and cheap Mersey Rail day rover ticket to explore Liverpool.

If you don't fancy the prom at West Kirby there is an aire at the marina near Albert Dock which is walking distance into the city, but quite pricey.
We’ve done liverpool by train from the Southport site, 15 - 20 minutes walk to the station at Birkdale. A bit longer if you go to Southport station. Day rover was £4.20 from memory a fortnight ago.

Thank you all for the information on places to stay.
As we live north.

All well within reach of a great city.
Even a biscuit factory shop just down the road!
Just smell the air when they are baking!
