3 years 30,000 miles UK and Europe.. Campsites and off Grid.
Any suggestions for good sites for winter breaks that are near an interesting city. Closer the better but a few miles out is ok for cycling - or on a good bus route.

I'm aware of Bristol, Winchester and York but other ideas would be good.

Another vote for Oxon Hall at Shrewsbury. Great Chinese/Fish and Chip shop/pub (restaurant) within walking distance. Park and ride and we did a tour of the prison which we highly recommended. Cirencester is another vote, also Briarfields near Cheltenham, excellent bus service between Cheltenham and Gloucester.
What we're you Convicted of ???

Probably not meeting the OPs requirements but a difrent idea for Edinburgh.
Melrose camp site. Ten minutes on bus or twenty or so minute walk to train station then train into Edinburgh.
Nice journy in but this time of year its dark on the way out.

Corbridge Rugby Club. Book via their website. They have water and waste, but o EHU as far as I am aware. Our friends use it regularly ehen visiting. Corbridge is a really nice town. The site is next to the train station. 30mins by train to Newcastle or the Metro Centre. 10 minutes to Hexham. 45 minutes to Carlisle.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I forgot to say with in 3-4 hours of Milton Keynes but quite a few come within that bracket. Hope to grab a break before Christmas but the wife's back problems and a very ill mother in law may put paid to that. We shall see.

How about Liverpool?

We've overnighted on the prom at West Kirby a couple of times and used the fantastic and cheap Mersey Rail day rover ticket to explore Liverpool.

If you don't fancy the prom at West Kirby there is an aire at the marina near Albert Dock which is walking distance into the city, but quite pricey.

I understand they are now allowing overnight back on the docks (kings car park ??) It's been mention on here somewhere and i think it's on search for sites.. £15. Pay in car park office..

Chester, Shrewsbury, Lincoln

Ref Lincoln, there are some recent posts on here regarding the Lawns car park and the council stopping overnight.

There are a few Club and independent sites around Edinburgh that are good, eg Mortonhall and C&MC Edinburgh.
I second Mortonhall Just outside Edinburgh.

I second Mortonhall, we use it a fair bit and £2bus into the city is reliable and frequent.

Another vote for Abbey Wood. Lovely site, 10 minute walk to the "Lizzie Line", 25 minutes into London.

Harrogate Caravan Park, adjacent to the show ground and Sainsbury's. Bus into town ten minute walk. Now only open weekends.

We're just back from 3 days at Waterside Lodge site which is less than 5 minute walk into Southport, a gorgeous and very clean and tidy town with lots of eating places and plenty to do. From it's railway station it's a short journey to Liverpool or Blackpool.
Waterside Lodge is a small 12 pitch site with ehu and all facilities, it sits between the beach and marine lake, or if you prefer the Caravan club site, it's about a 20 minute walk into the town centre. (y)

Yes but not open year round I think.

A "basic" alternative is Shaws Trailer Park at Starbeck. Bus or train to Harrogate or further afield. I took the train to Leeds and Halifax but the other direction and you are soon in York.

I used Shaws when helping out at the Conference Centre a few years back and it was cheap, quiet and felt safe but very basic for tourers. Lots of residential units.

The showground site would be my preference but Shaws is adequate and I would stay there again, especially if wanting to go further than Harrogate itself for a day or two.

Plenty of small sites sorted around outskirts but not necessarily walkable.

Depends on the definition of walkable I guess. Far end of Kings dock to the Liverpool 1 shopping area is 15 mins. 0.7 miles according to Mr Google. (y) Seem's people are still using it with recent reviews. Now £18 a night, no facilities.

Thornleigh Park Farm, Chester. It’s a CAMC CL site, we stayed there a few weeks ago. It’s lovely, only three miles from Chester, and you can cycle in along the riverside cycle track right in to the city centre.

Not a city but Cheddar is an interesting place to visit and the CAMC site there is open all year. Bus stop nearby with buses to Wells (which is a city) and Weston Super Mare on £2 bus fares or free if you have a senior bus pass.
