Getting a bit pricey this moho lark.

We’re on the NC 500 at the moment, we have stayed at 3 pub car parks, we never had a bill under £50, so I definitely wouldn’t want to pay to stay on one.

Mickey.
If the pub charged you £20 but you got it knocked off your bill what’s the problem? It would mean those cheeky people that wouldn’t use the pub are at least giving something to the landlord.
Like you our bills are very rarely less than £50 so paying £20 up front then having back isn’t a problem for me.

I wouldn't do it but if you are a member of Britstops one of the rules is you are not under any obligation to buy anything.
That's true, and unfortunately there are some who will take advantage of anything if they can. Going in and buying half a pint of Diet Coke isn't really in the spirit of things! MOST Britstoppers DO spend money at the stops they use. Personally I like the farm shops/vineyards etc stops the most. I can stock the van up and buy stuff to take home or use on my travels. At pubs I've eaten dinner or breakfast, or had drinks and (substantial) snacks. There was only one place I can remember NOT spending as planned, and that was a pub where I'd booked to have breakfast but when I went to the pub from the carpark in the morning at the agreed time, it was closed up!

I heard a tale the other day of someone paying nearly £8000 for a family week at centreparks. That place perran sands in cornwall is milking it as well We have never stopped in a pub carpark but if we did we would certainly use the dining chambers even though we are teetotal

As a solo traveller my pub bills are never anywhere near £50. But if a pub charged a tenner, or a tenner per adult on board, which was then refunded against spend in the bar/restaurant, at least they'd get some confirmed income from vans/MHs staying.

If I was travelling alone my bill would be about half of the usual £50 say about £25. Therefore I still wouldn’t have a problem paying £20 up front so to speak.

I wouldn't have a problem with a booking fee so to speak which is refunded against a spend in house, but I only actually eat in pubs that have half decent reviews to be honest but in those that dont have good reviews food wise we will always have several drinks and snacks.

The problem with reviews is they are personal and therefore probably not in line with my views.
Some people like lager for instance, I prefer Ales. If I was asked for a review of a lager I would probably say it’s fizzy and tasteless.
Some want vegetarian food and if the pub doesn’t do vegetarian then they would leave a less than favourable review.
I like to find out for myself whether the food and drink are to my liking or not.

That is not very far for the OH to walk to visit her, while you stay on site.;)
No no and again no.
It wouldn't happen like that.
If i was a dog people would ring the RSPCA to stop that happening.
As yet i haven't added an emoji because i cant decide which is appropriate

Yeah I don't. I trust reviews based on what they say, not just the rating so of course if a vegetarian left a poor review because somewhere doesn't do vegetarian food then I discount that person as an eejit and ignore that. I do however take note of peoples reviews that comment on the quality of the food and the service, I will also generally give some leeway on reviews that identify that they were there on weekend / christmas or other busy time. Its why I never have any takeaways on a Friday or Saturday anymore, food and service is always worse.

A couple of weeks ago we stayed on a CL that we first stayed on in 2000. £10 a night now; price in 2000, £7 a night.‘You
Booked on two THS sites this week both £9 a night, both superb locations by rivers.

Temporary Holiday Site (THS), as run through the Camping & Caravanning Club (C&CC), District Associations (DAs).

Cheers,

Jock. :)
Spot on Jock, we are at the first on now, it a flat recently mowed field boarding the river Severn at Bridgnorth. It’s well organised with all the pitches clearly marked. The steward says each pitch is 13.5metres wide and that there are 74 pitches. There are spaces now but I’m told Friday and Saturday nights are fully booked with a waiting list for cancellations.

Inflation at 2.5% allegedly will seem very mild in the not to distant future, I as many here can remember mortgages at 17%.
Not a time to be a borrower, or spend without care, regretfully Chickens will come home to roost.
As others have said, be cautious at paying inflated prices it fuels the perception of motorhome mega wealth to be plundered

I couldn't think of anything worse, each to our own.

The price can be anything on a van or a house, it’s the difference between the part ex or what you sell for and buy at that is important.

Indeed, I've literally refixed my mortgage today for 5 years as didn't see the point of gambling quite honestly. Its a tenner a month cheaper so happy with that!

Just booked 3 nights from 1st Aug Laneside in Hope Valley. Hardstanding with EHU. Been before, we like it. Riverside pitch. Short stroll into village. £88. Happy.

Seems to me that there a lot of cost obsessed posts in this thread and the forum in general.

I have been a camper all my life, both of us since we got married 50years ago,

For me cost was never the prime objective though it helped when the prime cost was a tent.

For many years we could have holidayed at less cost, package holidays etc but we like camping, if living in a motorhome can be called camping.

With the cost of motorhomes, and caravans, these days we could do our touring on the continent in a car stopping at cheap hotels and hostals, which we have done occasionally, at less cost.

Get a lot of hotel rooms for £20000 - £100000+.............but we like camping

These days cost is not the primary consideration and we are not wealthy, had to sell our house to be able to have the lifestyle we now have.

Having said that we all like a good deal

No problem at all paying up front and having it knocked off the bill, I said I wouldn’t pay to stay at a pub and then pay to eat and drink.

We have plenty of long term wilders, some of them are Funsters. who take just one night with us, you know they only want to dump and fill. Mostly this is mid-week, so not bothered in the slightest.

They pay a tenner for the night and often leave very early to bag their wild spot before anyone else claims it.

We are not often in UK, but just for interest and for other members information, do you offer something like a 2 hour, or so, stop just to use services, no pitch occupation involved.

We have found private site owners willing to do this as extra income.

Of course anyone offering that service has to cover the costa of water and sewage disposal plus a profit.

If so what charge?

Geoff

Yes we offer that service. You can pop in any time after 11 and empty and refill tanks for just a tenner. We'll even let you stop the night then if you wish (y)

Neat answer Jim,

But I take that as you do not offer a cheaper day stop for services than for overnight.

Fair enough, as it is your choice.

Geoff

Hi Skez we are making our way to France on 27th and fort two night in Normandy meeting up with some Dutch friends. We like staying on the more picturesque aires and have stayed in some beauties but have only been staying on aires as of last year. Can you recommend some of your favourite aires both rural and town centre. We don’t mind the odd night on tarmac.

regards

peter

Now on night 15 in France. Average cost per night including services is running at £2.69 at today's exchange rate. We will be here for around 8 weeks. Even taking into account our crossings and insurance it makes UK stopovers (even cheaper CL's) seem expensive and our stay in France will be massively cheaper than the same number of nights in the UK.

The longer we are over here the cheaper it gets.

And before the 'I don't like staying in car parks' responses, we have already stayed in many Aires that are mind blowing in terms of their views and locations. For balance I should say that we have also done a couple of town centre stopovers which were in fact car parks, effectively alongside the river - but free overnight right in the centre of town!

No booking ahead required, it's just so easy!

Also can't believe that we have yet to see another British van. Come on over!!

Btw - our ability to socially distance in rural France has been immeasurably easier than in the UK. We feel really safe.
