Get Sorning!

Maybe more than a month, well into next year I think.

Hère all vehicles must be insured on the road or not . Likely logic is they could still cause a fire . Or be in a building ie ours are in our barn which goes on fire. But we don’t have road tax .

Same here & it is not only auto renewal but not possible to cancel/change company until1 month before the renewal date. The only other way is selling or scrapping it.
There is a similar thing to SORn here called a 'baja' of which there are a few types. Most people would not even think of using one unless rebuilding etc ; for a prolonged period as

A) it costs about 40€ to actually 'baja' a vehicle

B) the instant it is 'bajaed' the mot becomes void even if it was done the day before

C) neither of the above cancels the road tax which is completely separate & payable to the local council fro the year from 1st january. Whoever the owner is on 1st January is liable for the tax which isn't payable until april/may here. Cancelling it doesn't get you a refund.

D) When you wish to put the vehicle back on the road , un-Baja it, it first must be mot'd. It cannot be driven to the test station legally. It must be trailered/transported.( more euros) Once you have an mot then you can do the paperwork to remove the baja & pay another 40€ ish.

E) if whilst Bajed you did cancel the insurance you would not usually get a refund. If you still cancelled it & more than 1 month had passed without you insuring another vehicle using the ncb , the ncb is lost.

According to my renewal that has just come from comfort they state must have MOT to be insured with them but vehicle can be sorned
I wouldn't be insuring with them. In the Uk I have insured vehicles that I didn't own but was the keeper , vehicles that I did own where I wasn't the keeper, vehicles that had no named drivers, I require 24 hour use ; i.e. there is no such thing to me as " night" . all of which I would still want along with unlimited mileage.

Strewth, so the cost of living may be cheaper in Spain but they hammer you for other stuff instead! I think I prefer the UK requirements for once!

You only pay if you did it. Rarely would anyone do it.

You are lucky. Sorned the motorbike on Thursday. Direct debit still took the money out today. Contacted DVLA for a refund but could take 10 working days.

I'm talking about having to pay the road tax regardless and being so tied with the insurance, doing the 'baja' is just plain daft so I can understand why people don't do it often.

Same thing has happened to me but the website does say it will be automatically refunded within 10 days so fingers crossed!

It is just normal . In the Uk I would never bother sorning anything as it was not easy to do years ago , +everything was claimable for tax being self-employed .+even when always taed & insured I would always want to use the vehicle that it wasn't possible to use.

Even now if I returned to the Uk it would be taxed & that was the end of it. Why have something parked up that you can't use that is costing money? I could never do it before & would sell them on.

Uk insurance is only a short step away from what it is here. We do not have insurance problems like the UK as although auto renewable it rarely goes up. In the event of a claim unless it is your fault it will not increase. There is no "knock for knock " here.
There are also yearly government values for each & every type of vehicle & 4 x 4's + boats sail & power on which is based the tax payable for buying but which also has the benefit of meaning that an insurance company cannot offer you a low figure. The minimum amount they can offer in any claim is the government yearly book value. The ' Valor venal'

but they hammer you for other stuff instead!
Not really . it has to be paid & no one I know doesn't drive daily. I once read an article stating that for insurance purposes in spain 35,000kms/year was classed as the usual distance travelled?

My total monthly outgoings for the house & vehicle for the year here is the same as what my council tax was per year in the UK in 2002.

All our insurances are automatically renewed unless you send cancellation by registered post I think 2 months before . But normally your new company does the cancellation on your behalf . Mind you I took out travel insurance for a visit to Oz . Thought no more about it till the next year it was automatically renewed . Lesson learned even travel insurance is automatic . Plus us you are never without insurance !

just wanted to correct something outside of the comment.
There is only one 100% certainty in this life; you won't get out of it alive :(.

There's actually 2 certainties in life - death and Taxes.

Mine is now on Sorn only just managed a short 16 days away this year so I would rather have the money back in my bank, so till next year my travelling is done just hope health stays good and Covid restrictions relaxed in 2021

Knock knock knock ... errrrmmm ... I've tried hard but haven't got my Oxford dictionnary at reach right now and can't find the meaning of "get sorning". Too many meanings for "to sorn or sorning", let alone with "get" in front. So if you don't mind explaining , I would probably understand this thread a tad better. Thank you !!!

It’s the term used when sending the road tax back on a motor but not using it on the road.
