Germany Ideas

We have just arrived at Titisee now and have booked in at Weiherhof camping for two nights. We were following satnav to somewhere else and just dropped in to this as it is lake side.

The thermal spa is superb, huge saunas, outside pools, bars restaurants, two sides to it, you can either go with cozzies or without, the choice is yours 👍

I must admit, although it was a perfectly good site with good facilities, it the largest site (excluding Glastonbury) I've been on, and I'd probably not go back.

The VW Variant meet up, unfortunately I did not take any pictures.

I had two of them back in the mid 1980's
I sold one to a mate for £50 (which was double what I'd paid for it) he then bought a fiberglass copy of a Porche 911 shell, and converted the car into a Porche look alike.

The other one I kept for at least 3 years until it was written off by a neighbour hitting it whilst pissed, which wrote it off.
Wonderful car, above 60mph conversation was impossible as the roar of the engine sounded like a Harrier Jump Jet doing a vertical take off.
On motorways cars would hear you coming before they saw you!

Only issue was at high speeds it drank fuel so fast you could actually see the petrol gage moving!
Both Type 3s I assume, a model I have never owned but I have had three Type 4 Variants plus a four door saloon. Beautiful cars, way too advanced for their time (1968 - 1974) and expensive to run fuel wise. I wrote one off in the ice & snow in the early 80s and unfortunately the others rotted away around me. All caused by the dreaded plastic underseal of the period which allowed damp to capillary between the underseal and the metal.
However the injection engine was superb when fitted into a VW camper of the same period, 80bhp was exceptional in those days!

I have a plan
Up the dutch coast into Germany over to the Baltic then down to the Harz mountains then back towards starting point via Meppen area and the river Ems
Bit of a copy of some of Riverbankannie route
The route may be in the opposite direction though
Will be happy anywhere really if we get away and just need the weather to be ok

If you are going to the Netherlands - just south east of Rotterdam is Dordrecht - nice Aire in the marina just outside to the east. If you dont have a bike you can hire one from the cycle point just outside the marina. Easy to cycle into Dordrecht historic town from there. If you go further south there is Breda - a few Aires there too. There is also the option of camping at the fort - yes - a fort - each gun placement is a pitch for a motorhome.

Has anyone been here

Off tomorrow and still not decided
Going to stop somewhere about Giethoorn for the weekend.
The problem is there are too many places I want to go.
If I get time I will update where we wander
Just about on our way:dance2:

Camped near Giethoorn in the NL
I haven't heard of it either but someone recommended it
Will try and post some photos tomorrow
Driving in the NL works well for the mpg +33 today (y)

Giethoorn old village was well worth a look. Best to go early in the day or late when the tourist buses are gone.
Will hopefully post photos when I have better WiFi
I think another cycle about the area tomorrow
E bike a bit redundant here who would have thought the NL were flat
Latest thoughts we will point south east towards Germany on Monday.
I need some hills.
At some point it looks like we will hit the Necker river as I want to go to tec museum Simsheim and there is easy train service.
Been to Speyer in the past but there is only so much engineering memorabilia that Mrs Garfields will put up with on one holiday.
Mosel looking like it's on the cards at some point

Zoutelande and middelburg both worth a look on your way op the Dutch coast. Fish to die for. Giethorn is lovely but as others say gets busy. Kinderdijk another great spot.
Then in Germany lubeck and travemunde lovely seaside resort

If you are anywhere near Dokkum I would highly recommend, lovely historic picturesque town with large windmill ,great café s and restaurants, campsite next to playing fields, 5 mins walk into town.

If you are going via the Netherlands do go to Enkhuizen and the open air museum. I went there first as a student in the late 60s and have returned several times. you can wander around an old Dutch village with herring smoking, old shops, a laundry etc. you can even sail on one of the fishing boats. You can park on the quay So super easy to get to. You can then cross into Germany and although cities aren’t my thing, Bremen is well worth a visit. The Reisemobil Stellplatz Am Kuhhirten campsite is good and you can cross the river by ferry and walk into the old part of town. There are two good places to eat very near the campsite; Cafe Sand which is on the river beach and also Der Kuhhirte also a couple of min walk away. Try Bremen Knipp. You can visit the island of Neuwerk by horse drawn cart and stay for the night if you wish.

Giehoorn
Well worth going early or late in the day.

Decided to head south for Valkenburg next that Dutch 68 suggested
Site I had planned have said they have construction work this week.

Giethoorn is great on a sunny day, I hope you made time to hire one of the electric boats for a couple of hours? We did visit in June before school holidays , very quiet.
Valkenburg and Maastricht are both very nice, and close to the Belgium and German borders, have fun👍

So much for plans
Presently at Burgen on the Mosel.
Heading for somewhere upstream of Heidleburg next.
Just happy being able to stumble about again
(All destinations subject to change)

Planning to head back to Germany later in the year and after some ideas.
In the past we have done the Rhine, Moselle, Neckar, Black Forest and Bavaria along with other odd bits.
Most I would be happy doing again other than the Black Forest which I wouldn't bother with again. (not sure why it didn't really click though weather was a bit iffy and we were pushed for time)
Not relay a city fan though we liked Heidelberg.
Thinking we may head to the north as have not been there.
I'm more or less ruling out the old east for this year due to current fuel costs
We have three ish weeks so may do a bit of Holland as well
Tend to stop in a place for three days or so
All weather dependent
Inspiration required please
Romantic route was fantastic!

We're on the Romantic route now - halfway down at Augsburg. Been staying in Stellplatz type sites mostly but this weekend it's been difficult to find space. The Germans seem to all come out at the weekend. Hoping they all go back to work tomorrow!! Loving the towns on the Romantic route though, and loving Germany generally, clean, efficient, good roads, good drivers.

In fact the more I go to Europe the more disolusioned I come with the UK. :(

(Fuels a bit expensive though €2.20 per litre now. That's £1.93!! I paid £1.38 last week in Gravelines.)

Agree we are travelling around also loving the roads and the lovely towns (y)

Will we are know at Neckargemund upstream of Heidleburg
Great site with very helpful staff not the cheapest stop we have had but we like it (y)
Off to tec museum tomorrow

We are at Sarrburg now having left Gravelines this morning.
Seems lucky as we never arrived until 4-30 and only a couple of places left for longer vans😁
Here for a few days before heading off down to the Mossele

Tec museum today big place.
Sitting with a beer now (y)
Not sure what's up with phone but struggling to get photos onto post

We will probably end up there as our last stop when heading home. Nice place for a wander 👍
Certainly on a nice sunny day, heading for Cochem, then bernkassel kues tomorrow, we are planning to be away till mid December so we will do a few miles, where are you now ?

At Neckargemund up river from Heidleburg
Campsite almost under bridge over river
Really nice people running site.
Easy train to tec museum or bus or boat or train to Heidleburg
Plan to move on Wednesday
Probably towards Trier

Rügen and the Baltic maybe a little far if the cost of fuel is a concern. However, if you get that far, the Mecklenburger Seenplatte is a great area to discover. One of Germany’s little secrets.

Kevin R we did start heading that way this time but turned south as weather looked better.
One of the advantages of having a van you can make things ups you go along.
Always open to new ideas though
