Gaslow exchange

It's a UK industry standard, that is then used by the UK HSE to underpin a number of UK Regulations in respect of Flammable Gasses.
The unlawful bit comes when companies who supply LPG allow customers to fill their out of date ( so not conforming to the Regulations) refillable cylinder - those companies would then be in breach of UK HSE law.
If they do not want to break the law and risk being prosecuted or having the gates to their business locked up by the HSE, then suppliers of LPG will refuse to fill your 18 year old cylinders and inspectors carrying out Hab Checks will check all of your LPG cylinders, hoses and regulator for being in date. They would bring to your attention your 18 year old equipment.
So it's not unlawful for a person to have out of date LPG cylinders, but getting them filled at a law abiding LPG supplier would be a little problematic.

Thank you … at last a sensible answer..👍🏼

I have yet to be asked to show my Gaslow cylinders and, because they are strapped into the locker, it would be (probably?) impossible to see the date stamped on the base.
How can anyone see them when one has an outside filler? 🤔

PS. What about underslung tanks, mine on the VeeDub, hasn't got a date stamp on it?

No one has ever asked to see my gas bottles in Any country I've travelled in including the UK so would have no idea of any dates. I don't have hab checks done as most of them are incapable and pointless. A perfect example is the hab check allegedly carried out on my current van in October 2023 which neglected to pick up on a missing gas tank with an untapped gas pipe, out of date cylinders, 2 leaking taps , leaking water tank, leaking overflow pipe , fridge not working and a list of other things yet the hab sheet was filled in and signed.

Wouldn't trust one of those clowns as far as I could throw one.

Neither do we, and nor did the previous owner, as we are both more competent, than those who profess to be competent at Hab Checks.
If something needs fixing, I'll fix it. If I can't, I'll get someone in whom I trust. 👍

Cheers,

Jock. :)

You are quite correct, I have never had my gaslow cylinder checked when I refill it. I guess that it is because I have an external filler point.
Just how much diligence suppliers show to their legal duties, is entirely up to them... In my book its way more important to stop people (other words are available) from refilling calor type cylinders......
As for Hab Checks - I do my own monthly as I want them done properly and not just annually. But I do have an annual independent one carried out, purely for the vans warranty and my report does include the gas cylinders and hoses.
When the van is out of warranty, it will be back to the tried and trusted Hab Checks - my own!

Just out of curiosity, just how thorough are the hab check operators?
Do they just check out the dates on the hoses and cylinders or do the do a pressure test and gas detector? 🤔

I can only speak for my check, but yes the dates are checked.

Is that all? 🤔

If so, I do better than that. I know the dates of my cylinder and pigtails + 3-4 times a year, I do a gas check with my long nose detector on all the connections. 👍

I'm trading my van in. The Gaslow bottles were checked and both apparently are more than ten years old. Odd as one was purchased new by me in 2015, and the other in 2019. Have I been done, by whoever sold and fitted them? I accept the 2015 one may have a date 10 years since manufacture (if that is the date), but the other one should still be current.
