Garmin Camper 780 MT-S not loud enough. Your experience, please.

Martist did you ever get this "fixed"?

Did you raise with Garmin?

I can't say for sure because I haven't taken it on a test run yet to confirm it. But what I found, given several helpful clues by members, was that the choice of power supply significantly affects the volume and my impression with it off the vehicle is that the supplied cigar lighter plug gives it the boost that is needed.

I've been having a bun fight with them and given their standard of support I wouldn't be praising them!

Long story short,
  • had a Camper 760 for about 5 years or so and pleased with it however back in September 2021 it lost the option in Garmin Express to update \ re-install maps
  • nuvi 2460 that is about 8-9 years old still had the functionality
  • after numerous calls and emails they said the 760 was defunct and as it was out of warranty they could only offer a 30% discount (not too bad) on a new unit
  • as I deliberated I was bought a Camper 780 for Christmas and fired it up early January - it had exactly the same problem as the 760!
  • again, numerous calls to Garmin resulted in it exceeding the refund window however retailer offered a replacement
  • in the interim Garmin admitted the issue with the 760 was a software issue at their end and they fixed it during one of my numerous calls
  • when asked the question why did we have to buy a new device when there was absolutely nothing wrong with our current one it went all quiet!
  • they're still refusing any redress for the not required expense of the new purchase!
I know it wasn't my cash but I'm well annoyed that someone else had outlayed when not required!

In response to OP question, have you got the master volume set high enough (guess so), have you got the audio mixer for navigation set high enough and have you got auto volume enabled?
OK, so I'm quoting my own previous post to give an update.

Give Garmin their due they have now confirmed they should have investigated the issue with the Camper 760 in greater detail and this would, almost certainly, have removed the "necessity" to purchase a new Camper 780.(y)
Given this they have refunded the cost of the Camper 780.(y)

So, albeit after many calls, emails, etc they did step up to the mark and delivered an appropriate solution.(y)

ps and yes the refund was passed onto the purchaser (albeit with much grinding of me teeth!:crying:).

Ive found with my android phone,I can only increase(by pressing volume up button) when the directions are actually being spoken.
Its a bit hit and miss to know when its "talking" to you,but maybe approaching a junction or roundabout maybe when it should be giving instructions?.
Hope i've explained it correctly.🤔

The maximum volume on the Camper 780 is definitely lower than that of the 760.

I have the 760 at around 60-70% whereas the 780 has to be a 100% to match this.

Garmin have confirmed there is no "fix" for this.

As an aside, for those who have "upgraded" from a 760 (and possibly a 770) to the "basic" 780 MT-S try your power \ aerial cable from the older model as it appears to "upgrade" the MT-S to the MT-D (no mobile phone app required to get traffic information).

Alternatively, you can change it from a MT-S to an MT-D by using this cable to to power it -

I've just bought the Camper 780 MT-S from Argos, as did several other members, but even when the sound is set to maximum I cannot hear it above the general noise of the motorhome. Have I got a faulty unit, is there a setting that I'm missing or is it the same for everyone? Any remedies, please? Running satnav on my phone next to it is twice as loud.
I have the master volume set to max.
Is that the 10 inch one?

I’m also a motorcyclist who has a BMW, their Motorrad Nav models are Garmin based! These units are notoriously common for having problems, the most common is that on the handlebars there is a spinning thumb wheel to navigate through the options which for me is on its 5th!! replacement. In my experience the Garmin after sales service is virtually none existent until you threaten legal action. Fortunately for me I paid for the unit by credit card which I have to say have been excellent in fighting my corner. In my opinion, Garmin/BMW are happy to take your money but very very slow in acknowledging faults.

I can't find any detail on your garmin re: input/output options but if you have it, an aux-in solution generally works.

Gellyneck Do you have the 795 if so how are finding the volume? I have everything on max and it's still not loud enough to hear satisfactory over the traffic and van noise.

We've got 760 and 780's. Both are set at around (from memory) 70% and are, in normal conditions, OK.

If you can't find a solution I would take it up with Garmin support, they've been very good to me in the past.
Waste of time.

They suggested turning off the radio and stopping any rattles.

The 795 is quiet as well, no Bzt output or connection sockets.

My 770 and 890 are both not quite loud enough but I’ve learned to live with it

When I know I’m approaching a satnav command I just turn the radio and rattles down using the steering wheel control 😉👍

Just had a thought, Dane. Not like me I know but ................

Does your 795 have an audio mixer functionality? If it does you can set the volume as a %age of the master volume for different audio, eg navigation, phone calls, etc. You don't happen to have the navigation volume set to a lower level?

Grant, thinking erm have another dram and sit down before you get giddy.

Yes it does have a mixer for nav, phone, alerts and tones and I have them all set to max along with the master volume slider set to max.

Mmmmh
Maybe too much water in the dram enabling me to think!
Off to correct that! (y)
