Garmin Camper 780 MT-S not loud enough. Your experience, please.

I've just bought the Camper 780 MT-S from Argos, as did several other members, but even when the sound is set to maximum I cannot hear it above the general noise of the motorhome. Have I got a faulty unit, is there a setting that I'm missing or is it the same for everyone? Any remedies, please? Running satnav on my phone next to it is twice as loud.
I have the master volume set to max.

I have both my sat navs on mute. I don’t need to hear it wittering away. Much better muted.

If your Radio and the satnav are Bluetooth enabled you should be able to pair them and get the sound through the speakers

Thanks for that suggestion. I was looking for something like that but then I read that the 780 doesn't support using bluetooth out for sound.

I have the same problem and so far not found a way to increase the volume. I've got used to it being quiet and only use it as an "aide to guidance" but I agree it ought to be louder

Our 760 is plenty load enough there is volume adjustment on ours so can't imagine they made a newer model without.

I complained vigorously that the Aguri 720 wasn't loud enough and they gave me a little speaker for it. It does a good job but an awful female American voice tells me when it's on or off. It's not the one in the advert though.

Daft question for you but have you got the nav volume on max? Not just the master.

Thanks for replying. Sadly the bluetooth on the 780 is IN only. Have tried to pair radio and also a separate bluetooth speaker but it doesn't work.

It's not connected, it's a mini bluetooth I think

My nephew does this. How do you know where to go then without taking your eyes off the road?
I never even look at it unless it speaks.

The same way I used to know before the advent of the sat nav. Every so often have a look whilst it is safe IE at traffic lights, whilst waiting at junctions etc. Then remember the next couple of turns and repeat. Mine on the bike is immediately above the dash so if you can look at your speedo you can look at your sat nav. In the van it’s in the bottom right hand corner of the screen so it doesn’t obstruct the forward view. Unlike those that have it stuck in the middle of the screen just where they obstruct the area of road a motorcyclist is likely to be.
It’s no different to looking at any other dial or gauge on the dash.

Our garmin don’t know which one is really quiet will try it with a Bluetooth speaker, it is much louder when my phone comes through it.

Excellent suggestion. It's not hard wired but I can try a more powerful supply..

If you can't find a solution I would take it up with Garmin support, they've been very good to me in the past.

I think there's an improvement. The roads are quiet around here and I can't get up any speed so it's difficult to tell! I had been using a USB cable and switched to the supplied cigar lighter connector.

Try leaving the satnav‘s volume at, say, half-way up and get the satnav to give a command both with it plugged in and just on its own little internal battery. Then you’ll have a control.
When we’re driving and the navigator wants to amend a route or find a petrol station, for example, she takes the Garmin off of its cradle and unhooks the power lead. She then adds the new coordinates and before putting it back, the Garmin gives commands that are noticeably quieter than when hooked up.

Thanks, I'll experiment. Although a difficulty is that I don't have a navigator...

Long story short,

• had a Camper 760 for about 5 years or so and pleased with it however back in September 2021 it lost the option in Garmin Express to update \ re-install maps
• nuvi 2460 that is about 8-9 years old still had the functionality
• after numerous calls and emails they said the 760 was defunct and as it was out of warranty they could only offer a 30% discount (not too bad) on a new unit
• as I deliberated I was bought a Camper 780 for Christmas and fired it up early January - it had exactly the same problem as the 760!
• again, numerous calls to Garmin resulted in it exceeding the refund window however retailer offered a replacement
• in the interim Garmin admitted the issue with the 760 was a software issue at their end and they fixed it during one of my numerous calls
• when asked the question why did we have to buy a new device when there was absolutely nothing wrong with our current one it went all quiet!
• they're still refusing any redress for the not required expense of the new purchase!

I know it wasn't my cash but I'm well annoyed that someone else had outlayed when not required!

Sounds ominously similar to my experience with Garmin support. I bought my Nüvi 3895 LT a few years ago with guaranteed lifetime European map updates. I first contacted Garmin when my device singularly failed to connect to my PC then running Windows XP Pro. The suggestion was to return it to Garmin and then I’d get a £100 discount if I bought a new model also with Lifetime Map updates for £300ish. I declined.

I reminded them that my first Garmin had lifetime map updates and asked who’s lifetime were they talking about in respect of the ‘guarantee’? Was it the lifetime of a fruit-fly? A tortoise? My lifetime? The Garmin operative said the lifetime of the device. What’s that I said? It never mentioned it had a definite lifetime when sold to me. It was a feature that I would have taken into consideration had I but known.

I eventually managed to get it to connect to my Mac and was able to update maps but only if I first deleted all user data. So all the aires entered and visited and kept for future trips have to go each time I want to update the thing. But I’m cheered that if I only lash out another £345 for a new one and return the ‘ unfixable’old one everythimg will be hunky dory; even my ‘free’ ‘lifetime’ updates.

Once you understand that Garmin’s big business is military guidance systems and not domestic sat navs for the likes of us, the extent of their domestic consumer service policy i.e. “if it don’t work send it back and buy a discounted new one” becomes clear.

Having said all this, when it is updated, it mostly works fine though I never trust it as our sole or even main navigation aid preferring to check all routes with a road map and a degree of common sense.

I do keep wondering how much longer my Zumo 660 is going to keep updating. It’s over 10 years old now and so far still keeping going and still updating. .
