I know another toilet thread 😁
Were doing a tour of Scotland, presently by loch lomond, all is good sun is shining, beer is going down a treat. The one thing that is spoiling it is the stale funk from the toilet.
Before we left I cleaned it with bathroom cleaner every where, the bowl round the back all the floors, inside where the cartridge lives, then used the shower to throughly rinse it all down.
The funk is back 😤 I'm at a loss what to do or what else to clean next.
All advise and witty comments are welcome 🤣

Depending on the type of cassette, it could be the breather from the top of the cassette if it is not making good contact with the brteather pipe when returning from being emptied. I have had this problem and now add a little sillicon grease to the connection.
It is also possible that the top seal needs lubrication with sillicon grease to pevent drips into the cassette area when the cassette is not there.
As our washbasin and toilet are not in the same enclosure, I think I can tell the difference between grey and black smells but I could be wrong.
Another vote for Bio treatment, although we use bio soap jelly babies.

I will do the deep clean again tomorrow and report back👍
Add to that we are on a site with lo9s tomorrow, so I will clean the toilet again, then not use it at all and see what happens👍

Funk update
It would appear that the funk has subsided 🤞
I put the basket plug in the shower tray a couple of hours and things have definitely got better. The grey waste is looking like the culprit.
Many thanks for all those for their input.
Hopefully that's it sorted .
Will update tomorrow 👍
P.s the better half's mood has improved too😊

I keep bleach tablets in the van now, having tried
the Thetford grey waste tank cleaner,
cola,
some drain cleaner from a German supermarket,
The beach tablets are from a French supermarket and are easy and safe to to carry around and one broken up a bit and put down the plugholes does the job.
You can see that the smell follows us everywhere!

I know some that swear by this additive for a pong-free sweet-smelling loo. .

This stuff has been a game changer for us, a splash down the sink after emptying, pong free and even pleasant to dump 👍

Doent appear so ,funk is stronger when me nose passes the loo, also I can see water In the shower drain from when we had a shower earlier .Smells of the shower gel we used .😕
I have only once had a smell I could not trace for some time.
It turned out, the top seal on my toilet cassette was leaking slightly and when, nearly full and traveling, it had allowed the toilet liquid to dribble down into mouldings beneath the cassette and accumulate there.
Only a small amount, but it smelt terrible in hot weather!

Remove your cassette and check at the back of the vacant hole, good luck!🙂

Have you not tried a Dishwasher tablet when traveling, cleans stuff off most things in the dishwasher? 🤔

I would never use bleach in a Motorhome too many plastics & seals that can be damaged with bleach.

Works a treat, I dissolve one in hot water in our china cups gets all the tea stains off the cups then poor it down the sink.
Leave it in the tank for a day so it gets a good sloshing around driving between nightly stops.

as stated above if there’s been a leak from the seal or overflow valve it tends to accumulate in a small compartment under the cassette, if you remove the cassette under it will be a cover, you may find the dribbles collecting in there, worth checking out😂😂😂😂

No witty comments I am afraid but can I make a recommendation of Solbio? A game changer for me. You need to thoroughly wash out and not use any product that might kill the bacteria going forward but from here on in your senses will be assaulted with nothing other than pine forests.

Mark
Swapped to Solbio about a year ago and would never use anything else. The cassette has to be prepped properly over 24hrs but after that it’s excellent!!

Solbio all day long and a SOG no more smells in our loo, also started a fresh with a new Thetford Fresh up set

Citric acid solution left in the tank when travelling. It gets a good sloshing around, and unlikely to affect any working parts, or sensors therein. Also very cost effective, I now carry some always. Also good for cleaning flask, and crockery on board.

I opened this thread expecting to read about a “funky” or wild decoration in a MoHo. But this is all good advice for a new MoHo owner.
By the way if you use a SOG and no chemicals, do you need a peg on your nose when emptying Please?

Tiz somewhat more stinky when emptying, but far less stinky whilst using👍
But better for the environment 😊

urine is a biological contaminant so needs a biological solution. Go to your local pet shop and pick up some urine neutralising spray used when housetraining puppies etc. A liberal dose of that after cleaning will control the smell by killing it off. If you find the cassette has leaked, as some do if cracked or worn seals, spread some kitty litter in the cassette housing. Leave for a few hours to wick up any fluid and clean out. Reminds me, I carry a small bag in my van and need to replace it as helped another camper recently when a child used the toilet when cassette was away being emptied

That’s why I would consider fitting a SOG or even a dry toilet. We’ve had a composting system here for 30 years now. Thanks.

Well this depends. Far less stinky for the person using your loo. For your neighbours it is bad news if the wind is blowing their way. Please remember to change your carbon filters on the outlet :giggle:
