From Spain to Norway - the long way round

dont go shopping there then.....

Orienteering tomorrow starts from 4pm so we thought we'd go to see what the interest was, but now, reading that don't think we'll bother

Martin doesn't DO queues!!!

Well we did Friday's orienteering. It rained!!! Martin did quite well, I did quite well until the last control where I lost 10 minutes messing around the wrong cliff ( with many others I must add). Saturday was sunny and breezy and I had a good race but Martin messed up. Today was raining and we wimped out and didn't go to the event. Instead we started our drive north. We stopped for lunch at a very nice, but wet and windy, parking area next to a lake. Would be great in good weather.

We headed for another area in the Nordic Camping Guide which was OK but too busy for us.

It's very near to the southern part of the HUGE lake Vanern but we've not been away from the van yet. More to follow ...

Coffee and chocolate are first on the agenda!!!

so you and Martin did okish how about mike!

We're at the most southerly tip of the lake. The largest in Sweden.

Just had a stroll from the parking area along the nearest shore. Lovely simple properties in the forest.

The largest in Europe excluding Russia.. 400 kms to drive around...Unfortunately we drove along one side for 100kms and couldn't see it for the trees.. Occasionally there is a road down to the lake side...

Know what you mean about the roads here. We've already experienced the forest drives!!! Good roads though. May have to think our route north unless we put our heads down and just drive!

Don't know if you staying near Vanern for long but we saw beavers one morning near Hallekis when we stayed at a Campercontact site near by... They were in a stream which meandered through the edge of the town...

Looking good you two' enjoy and safe travels although I would like to see at least one foodie photo ?!!

me to, I aways like to see local foods.....

I only managed to post one picture of local food on our trip to Scandiland, Svelle which was a buttermilk pancake 'ferrry dish' referred to in a guide book we happened to read. Slightly underwhelmed by the experience as we had it with browned cheese and it turned out to be served cold. I don't think that sparrow sitting on the bench was keen either.:)

Sorry no foodie photos yet but more of where we're staying now. We're on the marina at Amal. About £10 for the night with free showers, washing machine a dryer. Did two quick loads this morning and chatted to a Norwegian boater while we were waiting. Been on a nice bike ride. Although it's quite windy here, we were slightly sheltered in the forest at times on the bikes.

Directly in front of us.

free washing machines? that will go down well with Bev (y)

edit - that was meant to be more serious than it reads, not a sexist comment, but good to find washing options at the equivalent of an aire (y):)

We parked next to the little lighthouse overlooking the harbour entrance.

The lady in the tourist office was very helpful when we asked her to recommend a restaurant. She rang around a few to see which accepted dogs and which had a liquor license and then made a booking on our behalf..

When we ordered our meal we asked for a drink to be told they had a license but didn't stock much at all, it was just for special occasions when you had to pre book.. With our meal we had a choice of Sprite or Coca Cola.. food was good though and cheap...

The little lighthouse is just to our left.

The girl (to us she is) at the tourist office is a gem. Nothing is too much trouble. Will probably have at least another night here and get the rest of the washing done. Where did you eat out, there seem to be a lot of pizza places here!!!

Our next Orienteering event is not too far away at Alvika but don't want to arrive until Friday. The event have made a camping city for thousands!!! Bit different to what we normally do but a one off. So is the fact that there are about 11,000 competitors who all seem to disappear into their vast forests.
The toilet and shower arrangements are "different" to say the least.

Perhaps 10 restaurants, 9 are pizzerias !! Just searched Google but couldn't find the one we went to. It wasn't one of the many on the main route through but on one of the roads off..

Thanks for looking anyway.

Had a great cycle ride today, about 45km, half of which was on forest tracks and my new bike was excellent :D.

The forest tracks were actually roads, with sign posts and 70km speed limits!!! Just when we thought we were in the middle of nowhere we came to a hamlet. At the end of their tracks they had post boxes and wheelie bins. Which led to us wondering how often they had them emptied!

We had new Swedish neighbours when we arrived back. What do you think?

Martin likes it, I'm not so sure.

A lake deep in the forest. Kids in the cold water again!

The boat across from us has an interesting name. Must have a meaning in Swedish?

Blondie sang Heart of Glass - is that what you're thinking of?

no I was thinking hazel o conner, but it was nick lowe, hazel o coner was in a film of the same name

Today we decided to leave the Stallplats here on the marina at Åmål. Waiting at the fresh water filling tap we spoke to Swedes who winter in Bolnuevo! Small world.

We'd decided to pick up an Orienteering training pack from a local shop, head there to have a bit of training and then move on.

Pack duly purchased and a suitable parking area found we headed off into the forest. We were sidetracked by the views and the bilberries, a good portion of which I foraged but Martin is impatient so only a portion!!!

IMG_20170719_110512249_HDR.jpg

Little House in the Forest, Stallplats in the, very, far view, above the sail.

We've never trained in such a pretty area and our training became a stroll.

The view from another forest house's garden!

And a small bay.
