From Spain to Norway - the long way round

We stayed at an apple/pear camperstop recommended by @famdebree which was in the area of the Hook of Holland on the coast. It is of course flat but we did a nice cycle ride along the coast side. The camperstop was set in the fruit orchards and they even baked a loaf of bread for me.

We were going to "Do" Hamburg on Sunday but decided to spend longer here, take the ferry and wander back slowly. We have the time and it keeps our speed slow with the pesky wheel problem.

Are there any "worth visiting" places between here and the "Hook" do you know???

There must be but as we are in the car and en route to catch the ferry on a long journey home we are not on holiday as such. Next year we will be in the motorhome retracing our steps to Hirtshals and beyond to Norway so we will be asking you the same question.

Don't know where you are right now, but we are going to Maassluis camperstop at Thursday afternoon for a night. Is very near to Hoek van Holland. We like to watch the big ships passing and Maassluis must be a nice old town.

We are at Ditzum almost in Holland!!! With many other motorhomes. Don't know why so many but maybe we'll find out soon when we go out for a walk. I think it might be a nice town? It's just stopped raining but is still grey and damp.

We'll be near Hoek van Holland on Tuesday for a ferry that evening. It would have been nice to see you. Definitely look forward to seeing you again in Totana.

We've had a walk around Ditzum and it is a pretty fishing village with a windmill, a la the Netherlands! Not be taking this ferry with the van although they did bring a car across on it. Still don't know why there are so many motorhomes here but more keep arriving!

They've heard of PPP!!! On Holland!!

berhaps theres a fishing compition?:cautious:

How is your van or are you limping along?

We're doing OK thanks. We think it's the handbrake that sometimes sticks on the rear wheel. We drove for almost two hours today and the wheel was warm but not hot when we stopped. If we can get back to Notts/Derbys we should be able to get it sorted.

We made a couple of crumpled foil circles to hold the tray above the flame and it worked.

The van isn't right. The wheel needs to come off and everything behind it investigating. Whatever is behind it!!! If it holds out till the UK it will have a thorough overhaul. It's the same wheel as the one with the brake problem in Norway so there's an underlying problem that needs to be sorted.

Try leaving in gear, putting stones before /after a wheel if you suspect that& use as little as possible.

Thanks but if we can get it back to the UK (having a couple of weeks there before taking the ferry to Spain) we can get my brother to take it apart and sort it.

Edit

Hope to see you in Spain again. Make yourself known though please as we forget who some people are!!!

Yes we will be back Feb some time.good you have a mechanic in the family

Thanks Gus...good idea...but we have made about 10 ferry crossings with 2 still to go, so its vital then.....I could examine the problem wheel but as we are nearing professional help I intend leaving it. It really isn't that big a problem since having new caliper and pads fitted in Norway.

I now know where we are in Holland. We're north of Apeldoorn, but I don't know by now many kilometres, near a village called Sint Jansklooster and near the National Park Weeribben-Weden.

We're on a €12.50 a night, with leccy, campsite and with very few other campers! We did a cycle by numbers route again today. We found these routes last year. Martin had spoken to one of the four people on site this morning, whilst I was doing some washing, and he gave him some good info of places to visit.

We first visited the canal village of Giethoorn where the cycleway went down narrow, to us footpaths, and crisscrossing canals in different directions. It's possible to rent small boats to navigate the maze of waterways, or cycle or walk.

There were many Japanese, taking their photos, who we had to navigate around, but everyone was very happy and accepting of each others mode of transport. Even so, Martin, on a bike, was asked by a German lady, in a boat, how to get back to her hotel!!!

From here we continued on our cycle route which ended up at over 50km but easy because the only uphill was crossing bridges! We stopped for coffee and cake at Blokzijl, another nice village, where there seemed to be a car treasure hunt taking place.

Many people wandering around with pieces of paper and walkie talkies. We watched with interest and then continued on our way.

We cycled past the oldest cafe in Holland without noticing it. We must have because we left the village it was in without stopping.

Almost back at the camping we passed another windmill (Dutch one this time) and some Norwegian Fjord horses!!!

Me and my mum!

Back at base we had a beer (Martin) and gin (Me) then made a chicken curry (traditional Dutch food) which we've just finished.

Staying here for another day at least as we're not too far from the ferry. The weather is forecast to be sunny(ish) so that's OK.

The sun cleared nicely for our bike ride and it even got so warm we had to stop at a cafe next to this marina for refreshments.

Until we'd got half way down the drinks we realised they were 8 and 8.4 percent. The ride back to the van was very nice, thank you!

There is a Stelplatz here which Martin went to check out. The parking is just in view at the right of the photo.

Looks like a nice end to this part of your trip Judith. How long will you be in the UK ?

That's looks a great place to hang around for a few days, my foot needs a gentle introduction back into cycling. Noted in my list of places to visit for our forthcoming tour. Other long to wait now. :clap2:

Sandra, the flat cycling is endless. You can cycle by numbers. You can pick up maps at Information offices or arrive at a map board and pick the next number (distance shown) and keep on as long as you want. The numbers are at points along the route. It's a brilliant way of cycling in unknown areas. The Dutch women next to us say it's also used in Belgium.

We had one small problem yesterday when we cycled from point 83 to 27!!!

IMG_20170923_112520357_HDR.jpg

We waited a few minutes then got fed up and went back and picked another number!

We get the ferry to Bilbao on 10 October. Would like to revisit the New Forest if the weather permits.

Well if you are passing don't forget we are by the river .... and there is a carp lake with day fishing tickets, plus the trout lake....
