France, Spain & Portugal

Hello,

We successfully went through the tunnel to Calais this morning with our dog. Despite my apprehension with the paperwork for us and the dog it all went very smoothly. We got the AHC certificate from Abbeywell Vets at Folkestone and going through the Pet check area at the tunnel was a pleasent experience, very helpfull & friendly. We had our Fit To Fly tests done by Eurofins at Ashford round the back of Asda's. It was a small hut no bigger than a garden shed and really poorly signed but it was all quite casual and we showed negative so happy days. Mad me laugh when we got the email showing the results it read carried out in their Laboratory !!! no it was a shed.

Being a sunday the traffic was light so we have got down & stopped the night at an aire in Sur let Loir, nothing outstanding but it will do. On the way down we saw a herd of very majestic herd of dear with antlers an all, then opposite the aire was a field and there where about 10 small bever looking animals, ive heard them mentioned on here before but cant remember wht they are called.

Heading south again tomorrow, hopefully get to San Sebastion lunchtime tuesday.

Roger
Did you have to pre book your antigen test at Asda have you any contact details , have a good trip we will be about a fortnight behind you

In the period we are talking about, there were 'Mole Catchers' employed, in the Fens full time, by the River Authorities to kill Moles for the same reason. They got a basic wage but sold the skins as a bonus so 'No Moles' , little food on the table.

I may need one at the static van in France. Monsieur Taupe hasn't taken the hints of repellant and noise, and we have plans to landscape* the plot this spring.

*That's a grandioise way of saying 'plant a few shrubs and see if we can make the lawn look a bit less like like the ex cow meadow that it is'.

You need to book online, choose the area (Kent) then choose ASDA Ashford.

I'm booked in for the 13th.

Currently on Canterbury P&R prior to taking the Tunnel tomorrow morning.

We used “Simplytestme” for our LFT this morning. Very simple uploading of tests and results were received within about 15 minutes.

All necessary documents uploaded to Eurotunnel and the green light received by e-mail so all set for our 5 times delayed (COVID) trip to Brittany.

Can i ask how long before departure did you upload your declaration d' honeur?

We have arrived in Honfleur for the night and the market tomorrow before moving further into Brittany.

For anyone considering travelling to France imminently here is what we found……

For our lateral flow test pre travel we used ”simplytestme”. At a cost of £12.50 pp we didn’t expect much but they were really good. Test arrived in plenty of time, the instructions were clear, uploading our test results was simplicity itself and we received our “pass certificates”, by e-mail! In about 15 minutes.

We downloaded the “Declaration sur l’honneur”, printed it off, filled it in and then photographed the completed form.

We also downloaded/updated our NHS COVID pass and ported it into the French “Tous COVID” app, although the NHS one is now accepted in France.

About 22 hours before we were due to travel we uploaded copies of the three forms above to Eurotunnel. In about four hours we received confirmation that all was in order so no physical checks were needed at the Terminal.

As usual we arrived early for our train, we we’re put onto an earlier one, only about a quarter full. We showed our passports to U.K. Border Control, showed them to French Border Control, who stamped them, and that was it. Straight through, no checks of COVID documents, nobody asked to check if we were smuggling meat or dairy products in our fridge.

OK, faffing around with the document preparation is extra to previous travel arrangements but it really is nothing to worry about.

Day 3, we have arrived at San Sebastian still no rain ! the huge long road works near to the border of Spain have all gone (y)

Managed to creep over the border before buying more fuel so quite a bit cheaper. We are parked at the aire, it is quite busy, sadly an englishman with an old Merc lorry converted to live in, has had his generator running for at least half an hour

We cycled into town let the dog have a run on the beach, and then we purchased some Tapas, it was bloomin amazing, best ive had all day.

21 days for us & definitely counting ;) First timers complete with pooch, so no return booked in case HWMBO decides she doesn't like it:unsure: All being well, we'll be heading home mid May🤞

Like you, doing a lot of research & reading, looking for inspiration 👍

1 day for us we leave Thursday 3rd via the tunnel. Heading to Spain, I’ll probably start a travel thread tomorrow. Last time we were in the Moho abroad we were rushing back from Morocco February 2020 with covid on our heels.

Excellent. You will love it can’t see you coming home early. Don’t forget to get French pet passport whilst over there ready for next trip(y)

We have the same issue at ours on The Vendée. I trap around 4 or 5 every year on our three plots (ours and two daughters). They are supposed to be quite territorial, when I get one of the little buggers, we don't see another for a few weeks.

To the OP, no fridge check then? My wife is getting pretty nervy about her fridge and freezer being emptied when we go over in mid March!

If you're near Apremont I may have a job for you .....

No fridge check, just the gas as per, I do wonder if the fact that we paid by credit card, ( so very traceable ) also got there early, in fact even with checking the dog in we still got on the train an hour earlier than booked as it was so quite, and we had uploaded everything I think you get full points so they have no appetite to check.

Still no rain (y) in fact it is so warm we are sitting in the van with windows open and literally not a cloud about. We have stopped in an aire at Aranda de Duero, just beyond Burgos. Will be looking for some more tapas tonight.

We had an interesting trip today, moving from Honfleur to Le Vivier sur Mer, seeing a lot more of the countryside than we intended.

SatNavs are great but, like any computer, “garbage in, garbage out”.

I, (yes I have to take responsibility), entered the incorrect coordinates into our SatNav. After running for about an hour I saw a sign for an Autoroute turn-off and thought, “That doesn’t look right”. We had travelled about 95km in exactly the wrong direction. Add another 22km until we could turn around and we completed a 214km tour just to get back to where we started.

However, having arrived at the Camping-Car Park Aire in Le Vivier we have just had a walk along the beach and watched the tractors bringing sackfuls of oysters and mussels off the beach. If we can any pics tomorrow we will post them.

Crrently hanging my head in shame at my poor navigation and having a couple of glasses of Calvados in order to try to forget it. It’s either that or join the French Foreign Legion as in days of yore.

With no return booked have you checked it's OK with your travel insurance? A lot won't cover you if no return booked.

Did you get searched for forbidden foods? I don't care about filling our fridge but I definitely want to take our dog's special diet food.

No checks inside, only made sure has was off, it seemed now different than previous years other than the paperwork you need to complete before hand, a relaxing experience. 👍

When I was last in Burgos in Jan 2015 it was -3C at night, sunny in daytime. I hope the difference is not down to Global Warming! :giggle:

Told them a "no later than return date", which they were happy to work with. Have taken out a multi-trip policy, so fingers crossed the long haired CO likes it :sneaky:

I record Johnnie Walker's sounds of the 70s and we started listening to one and the news came on and read "12 more cases of Covid 19 have been confirmed in the UK bringing the total to 36 cases"

Thats was a simpler time !
