Firesticks.

Surfshark VPN for me ...

There is a Mission brand USB adapter for the Firestick available on Amazon that contains a power ‘buffer’ to ensure continuity of supply to the unit (instructions are to power up the adapter from an external source before initial use).

NordVPN appears to be rock solid with a user friendly interface. They’ve just had a deal for a two year subscription which includes 5 devices. If one is your Mifi router etc. other devices can be set to ‘trust’ that network and not activate their own VPN to avoid ‘double tunnelling’ issues.
Sounds complicated

We have telitec fibre and I’m not sure how to use a VPN from the router to the TV

I’m no IT nerd, just able to follow instructions (slowly!), and the NordVPN website is very helpful and the installed device app very intuitive.

I was wondering that......unless it's catch-up TV.
No problem if its a UK sim card.BUSBY.

Bit more info from the pack note of the Mission USB power adapter for the Fire TV sticks (Made for Amazon)

I believe Amazon do a connector for that, seen one recently👍 Sorry beat me to it

Basic requirements to get UK, BBC,ITV,Chn 4 Chn5 etc from a firestick while in the Europe. TV with HDMI input. Firestck with apps for these channels, USB Power supply for Firestick, you choose.....Data connection UK Based...if you use European Data connection , a VPN is needed, same applies to site connections. Its possible to change DNS,settings but aint going down that route...Simples...Happy viewing. Forgot to add...Make phone carrying UK SIM CARD a HOTSPOT or your own method of tethering....MIFI etc... TTFN.
What he said ^^^^^^^^^My wife also uses IPTv subscription

has to be downloaded on the individual telly as far as I know. I'm using ordinary spanish internet direct from the router whilst my wife is watching tv streamed via a vpn on her tv.

Be aware also that many companies, including the one I use, can restrict your tv speed whilst leaving your computer /lap top/tablet speed unaffected.

(y) good shout.
Not sure who needs 4K in the motorhome but at the same price as a GEN2 HD only Amazon Firestick this Roku is handy as a budget 4K capable entry point.
I don't know how current the Roku stick is but I know the Amazon sticks got a recent hardware refresh (except the standard 4K Firestick)

Ou
Our Firestick cable got wound around the up/down tv mechanism and it stopped half way up. fused the TV and slightly damaged the usb port but it still works okay now. The fuse was difficult to find - actually it was easy once the boss read it out from the manual after I had been struggling for 2 hours!
It is almost impossible to unplug the Firestick from the TV without taking it off the up/down thing.

i think the 4k version will eat into your data allowance big time.

I doubt any motorhome would benefit from 4k unless you had a massive screen and the place to put it 👍

I’d expect the Roku to have similar data usage limit settings to the Firestick.
And I know those can be throttled. 👍🏻
But a good reminder for us to check. 😃

Roku v Firestick by Techradar

Have you got an Amazon Prime subscription - that could bias you to a Firestick straightaway 🤔🤪
Pretty sure google have thrown a device in to the streaming stick mix as well now. I like google tech but I don't like the prices. If my firestick showed any sign of weakness I would be trying googles product.

Saw a YouTube review on Roku and it was said that it maybe losing YouTube

I’m looking for them for the guests rooms at our villa. I was wondering how to use a VPN with them. Data is no an issue as we have fibre now
With NordVPN you download the App onto the FIrestick then Open the App and chose which country you want to be in then start any other App. Straightforward. Even if you forget then I have not met an App that realises I have just travelled 800 miles in 5 minutes - they just let you continue.

Yes. I forgot that. Thanks for the reminder.

There’s a Google chrome cast and apple also have ‘apple tv’ - a streaming device & service. The article and funster question was about the more mainstream (article opinion) devices.

The benefit is in the performance of the firestick, the non 4k version is slower, also you can set a lower definition to reduce data usage if that is an issue, it's worth getting the 4k even if you intend to use it at standard definition because it works better.

The old HD Firestick was slower in menus, etc.
The 2020 generation of Firesticks have the same core hardware base. Until the 4K Max model.
Amazon FS HW
But pound for pound, and sale prices, the 4K Max model is a good buy.

Depending on Smart TV model it’s also possible to use NordVPN SmartDNS directly on the unit for access to some streaming services. Otherwise, as Camdoon says, the NordVPN on a Firestick or any mobile device, Mifi router, etc. is very easy and intuitive to use.

We use ours right across EU, with a VPN and good internet connection BBC,ITV,Ch4, CH5 and Amazon etc all work fine.
Which vpn and data provider/plan do you use please?

I’m being a little thick but why do you use a VPN ? What are the benefits ?

🤷‍♂️ Too defeat geo tagged media? Circumvent media licensing?
Like, if you’re in Spain, the Formula one media rights owner won’t be Sky UK so a VPN let’s you watch Sky’s coverage.

Or just to get access to hacked content that by default is blocked by Amazon.

All that kevenh has said with, for me, geolocation probably being the most useful when travelling outside the U.K. and accessing domestic services - setting the VPN back to a home server with just a tap on the screen.

There’s also anonymity, and that’s not because I’m a tinfoil hat wearer but why not protect yourself online from any nasty floating around out there!

Some VPN providers will also have a package of included extras which may be handy to have - NordVPN include a ‘Dark Web Monitor’, to notify if your credentials get publicly exposed online, a ‘CyberSec’, advert and malware hosting website blocker, plus the SmartDNS for TVs and a couple of other gewgaws.

Our firestick has inexplicably died and we always found it temperamental and were rarely able to cast to it from phones etc so we just bought a Google chromecast. I have a Google pixlebook so hoping we'll be able to cast much more easily and hoping it generally works better than the firestick. Will fire it up tonight!
