Fire tv 4k Stick

Thought it was too good to be true that the BBC app listings were added to the EPG, now the wait for a fix

On this thread there are references to my5, my take on this is that this no longer exists and 5 is the new app...
I'm skipping through this and finding everything works on a 4k Firestick..

Hi, if you have the live tv just before you get to your channels, click on that then drop down to guide and access 5 from there - it comes up with no listing information but takes you straight onto 5
Better still look for Troypoint and download Kodi onto your FS

Always confused about the Firestick ie why have one ? If your TV is a smart TV I presume you don't need one ??

TVs usually can't have a VPN installed, so good luck using a smart TV for iplayer in France.

We completely ignore the smartness built into our TV, as the firestick works faster and better, and also does a higher quality stream (and we can control how much data it uses easier than the inbuilt TV apps).

My personal view is you will overpay for UK based sim if you want to use a smart-tv in France, where if you have a firestick you can connect to campsite wifi (or aire wifi) if it exists and use the vpn and still get UK tv just fine.

5 isn't show available on the epg at all if you have deleted the 5 app and reinstalled as amazon advise. So you end up worse off.

No I simply go home on FS move 1 place to the right then down to tv guide and it shows all Chanel’s but nothing on 5 click on 5 and it loads up all ch5 stuff

I’ve just checked and if I select live and then guide and as you say it doesn’t show any five programs but if you select 5 it then give a choice which 5 channel to watch.

You can ask a Firestick to find programs and better for touring with.

I think I understand what is causing this issue but I think it's a bug. If you go to settings, Live TV then sync sources you will see My5, what should happen if you click on it, is it should come up with a list of all the available channels in My5, however there is no longer a My5 app it is now just called 5, so clicking on My5 does nothing, there is no My5 for the system to scan. Either 5 or Amazon need to sort this out.

Thanks that's very interesting, we have Nord VPN and was hoping to watch Netflix/ Sky Go on our forthcoming 3 month European trip on our new Cello C1924WS TV. However from what you've said that probably wouldn't work and we'd need to have a Firestick connected?

FireStick’s are great I have one mainly for USA sports via VPN but also recommend Apple TV box. Much more expensive but you can get SKY GO and watch all sky channels if you have Sky account. Only been available since 2024. Not available on Firestick

Yes, you can -> but you won't be able to change region as trivially -> router vpn's are usually limited to one region, where you can swtich region in case of blocking in literally 2 seconds on ExpressVPN at least on a firestick. Doing so on a router requires logging into the router, changing settings from a page from your vpn provider, taking at least 5 minutes if not 10 with my slow reading! ExpressVPN has at least 6 UK endpoints at moment, so if iplayer if blocked from one you can change to another in seconds.

In general both work, but the vpn on the stick works better, and even more so if you have other reasons for needing it. Good example is if I had a vpn on the router I would be unable to watch my championship football team on 3pm away game kickoffs as that is blocked from UK IP addresses, but is allowed on varying countries each week depending on where the rights sold (you can watch online but only from countries where the game has not been sold to TV). So even if we were in France, we may need an Australian or Korean endpoint to make the game work!

I can reccomend a stick, and yes I have a router capable of VPNing,but I ended up removing it (and using a cheaper 5g router) in favour of the stick vpn solution as it worked better.

So the download comes through the router via Nord VPN, I don't understand how another VPN in the Firestick thetefore works ?? As per above I have a VPN on each device I have, rather then on the router, this gives more flexibility. I use Surfshark now, although I previously used Nord, I moved away from them because of their pricing policy.

Thanks a lot, you've convinced me to get a Firestick - only £24 at Amazon at the moment. Last question I promise.....how is it powered, is it just through the TV itself ?

Pay £10 more and get the 4k one or even £20 for 4k max - It will come with a usb cable for power, usually from back of tv but I have known them to need a bit more power for set ups - Our tvs have 2 usb ports - one amp and 0.5 amp - no problem using the 1 amp power
Edit forgot to say if In no rush wait for a sale on Amazon Also the 0.5 is fine once setup is done

In theory you don't, except the fire stick seems to work better than my Panasonic smart tv and there are sometimes issues installing apps on the TV and fire stick, so neither are a problem free

We have smart tv in our hymer. Firestick works a lot better than inbuilt 'smart' features on tv.

Redbull tv is also not loading on the epg. So it's down to amazon.

we have a smart TV but the firestick seems a lot more efficient for us. More intuitive as well.
