Ferries and fuel

Funny that people are reporting large price increases in ferries to Greece also??
Yes, and I just priced up a crossing from Netherlands to Norway today, 2500 euros return for a 7m van, two people and a basic inside cabin. That's an 18.5 hour crossing so makes Brittany Ferries crossings to Spain seem very reasonable in comparison.

I just use Irish Ferries Dover to Calais. Cheap as chips. Even cheaper if you have Tesco vouchers. Generally around 180 return for 7.5 meter van.

Other money saving options, don't use toll roads, camp off grid or Aires at the most. We have managed South Spain and Sicily via this route.

? there is a bridge, what was wrong with driving, save time and money.

It all depends where your coming from I suppose, I normally use Dover to Calais ( because it's cheaper) when going anywhere East or South East, but the Dieppe route was right for us based on price and where we are going, and coming back we have to catch the ferry to Isle of Wight two hours after arriving in Newhaven.

Well, being in Milton Keynes nothing is particularly close but if you do a Europe trip that covers 3000 miles a few extra in the UK doesn't make a lot of difference. We make it part of the holiday. We usually drove to Dover the day before and then get an early ferry anyway.

It's also about the journey ... not just the destination ! I just look for the cheapest way out of the country. I like driving and seeing what the road brings, otherwise I'd just fly to places.

I was just looking out of interest as we may be passing along the north Netherlands coast later this year and spotted that there is a ferry route to Norway from there. I wondered what the cost would be if we decided to incorporate a week or two in Norway but at that price if Norway was our actual destination I'd rather drive as you suggested.

You might not believe it, but using a Motorhome when retired, used to be a cheap option to disappear for months on end, but in the UK since Brexit everything has doubled, once in Europe you can survive quite easy on your pension, just the cost of the ferry is the killer.
Nothing to do with Brexit, as for surviving on your pension be warned that stuff in France and Spain is a lot more expensive now compared to when we were there in March-May last year. I usually bring back some basic olive oil but the prices were ridiculous so didn't bother, same with loads of other things, everywhere costs have increased, some massively.

My mate is in Spain at the moment yesterday he was complaining about food cost for example he bought a couple of Chicken breasts yesterday they were 50% dearer than in the UK. At least restaurant prices haven't gone up much & he tends to eat out 4 or 5 times a week.

Before Brexit most things were cheaper, we have been back and forth multiple times each year for the last seven years and have been effected by it, alway buy where the locals shop, even when ordering stuff online from Europe now you have to pay more tax, never used to, now things are more costly no matter where you are, due to the gas & fuel crisis caused by governments sanctions, although in reality there is excuse for it.
