eBay motorhome ad - is this likely?

my car (honda crv 2007) was a one owner cat d write off, I have owned it for over 2 years and it's the best car I have ever owned for the money, it was about 30% cheaper than book price when I bought it.

category D write off is substantial damage or stolen and recovered. Both can be awkward to insure, impossible to finance and worth a lot less than book value

this story reads like pure BS, I would bet it was stolen, parts stripped off then recovered and sold by the insurance company

I agree, logical conclusion would be stolen, then recovered after payout, possibly purchased off insurance company by seller

Why not ask the question of the seller?

Well, what interesting reading.

The Carthago is my motorhome. I am truly amazed at the interest in it!

Anyway, I would be very happy to show any interested party our stunning MH this week.

There really are some very cynical comments on here. I have some excellent contacts and bought one of the nicest motorhomes on the market in 2017 for a fabulous price. I went to the insurance compound, saw it with the parts removed, agreed a deal and drove it away.

I know, its crazy they decided to pay out the previous owner, but do you know what, its my gain and it will be the next owners too. Its £30k cheaper as a result.

I updated her electronics, fitted a Maxview seeking satellite, bigger solar system, inverter and extra leisure battery and viola I have the best value motorhome that we are very proud of for less than any one else.

Now is your chance to own it, we have loved her and have done about 6000 miles, but hardly ever get time to turn a wheel at the moment and we know it wont get used in 2019 at all.

So, I challenge all the neigh-sayers to come and show me how its a 'scam' or 'had a new roof' it just hasnt. If I didnt put it in the advert you would never know.....

I can also confirm, it is not difficult to insure, its exactly the same price, our insurers were not interested when told.

Just for reference, I am looking to move a similar size item across Europe right now (boat), same weight and size. It costs £8000 to move 1650 miles. Puts repatriating a motorhome into context.

Does not stop the eBay advert sniffing of B S though.. sorry

with you on both counts, my cat D car is no dearer insurance-wise, and in 2006 I moved a 50ft yacht from Lefkas to Brighton, sailed to Slovenia, overlanded to Holland, sailed to Brighton, all in all cost over £7k then !

Well, despite what I know, the advert has been changed. No discussion point now. Makes me smile that following an insurance companies decisions and how operates their business reads as 'BS' (n)

Big company, deep pockets and I guess they didnt want the hassle. As a result I got a fabulous deal and dont regret it for one minute.

Couldn't agree more!

Thankfully, an insurance company would not put a driver at the wheel of a customers car to repatriate. Never. I deal with a transport company regularly who collect cars (many hundreds a year) from all over Europe to repatriate for insurance companies. Very, very expensive process with this motorhome as it would need a low loader.

I'm thinking stolen recovered and current owner bought at auction or possibly direct from insurer.

Many years ago a friend bought stolen recovered cars direct from insurers.
Minor damage repairs then local newspaper 'for sale' ads.
'Internet' was something that happened at football matches back then.

Just read comments from the owner.

I owned a cat d vw camper , no dearer to insure, written off for what cost me £200 to repair . Basically front bumper and drivers side front wing replaced and painted.

That was a £12k vehicle

Insurance companies are strange the shot they do.

I made £4k profit when I sold it too.

A general figure is 60% of current trade value and its financially a write off but they will take into account general condition etc.
They don't always stick to this though if parts are difficult to get or labour costs are excessive.

I know this has no bearing on yours but bear in mind the £200 it cost you would have at least doubled if not tripled at an insurers approved repairers and it wouldn't have been questioned.

Same across all insurers.
We had some storm damage roof repairs and I asked the roofer to replace any other slipped/lost tiles while he was at it as it was insurance and he adjusted his bill for the storm damage to cover it all.
He got paid.

sometimes i think you guys get uptight too much about ebay, i know all about the scams that are on there, but there is a lot of honest folks about you know, i have bought 2 motorhomes and 2 cars and believe it or not ,2 tractors as well off ebay , unseen and never been disapointed yet, just gone and handed over cash , none of this bank stuff, and come home with exactly what the listing said.
saying this , obviously they were a long way from this price catagory.
I've done exactly the same: three motorbikes & three Smart cars all more than 200 miles away. If you ask the right questions and receive detailed and friendly replies in general what's being advertised is as stated. I have had no issues with any item.

Good on you Nick for having the b@lls to come on here and give your side of the story ... there are so many Ebay scams with MHs the there's a bit of a 'knee jerk' reaction which I think has happened here as people try to look out for each other, but I'm very pleased that you are able to lay their suspicions at rest ... well for most hopefully.

Good luck with the sale. (y)

Just found a tab in my browser with the ad for this Carthago still open, hit refresh to see what was going on, oh, the irony .......

This listing was ended by the seller because the item was lost or broken.

He's probably sold it as there's no listings for it anywhere now.
