Easy entry solution when locked out of the m/h.

Funnily enough ive been locked out my van. First year locked keys in garage. Second time accidentally caught catch on door then closed it. 🙄
So this year i made sure i would have no mishaps and bought this just in case.

Great that your son managed to get back inside the van, but who knew that those tables can hold the weight of a grown man! (y)

Irish friend of mine never ever locked his caravan door..His theory was that if a thief pulled the handle and found it unlocked they would think someone was in the van and leave quietly,,He was never robbed ,,BUSBY.

door will self lock if the wind slams it shut
We had a caravan that the door would sometimes do that, it wasn't supposed to though.
It happened to me when Robert was wherever it was that he was and I managed to wiggle in through one of those narrow windows at the front, I would struggle to fit through the big window now.

That happened to us in our caravan days Tina... we were eating outside and door slammed and locked. Whole site came to help and watch -someone got on roof and somehow lifted latch with a fishing rod and a hook poked through a small vent. So embarrassing 😀

weve got a key hidden under the van took me an hour to find it when we locked our selves out and i knew what i was looking for
You were looking under the wrong MH weren't you!

Only recently paid my dues to be able to post on this forum and had expected at some time to see a theme like this.
We have a habitation door that is prone to lock itself if closed firmly enough. We spent a November evening on a Chatsworth site in the laundry room waiting for a locksmith who got in easily enough via a window. He asked me not to watch but I squinted and now have the means and method sorted for the future.
Bit bulky to keep in pocket, but my solution is to have habitation door key on elastic string around my neck at all times when I'm not in bed. First thing I do every morning is put it on.
It's never happened since !

I went through a phase of locking my keys in the car you know the old push the button down and hold handle open type thing. Car was quite easy to get into used to carry a screwdriver in my bag.
Police watched once as I popped a window open and just could reach to lift the button got a bit concerned as they walked towards me, just got a quick 'locked yourself out again sue' as they strolled past. turned out he was a friend of a friend.
Those were the days bobbies on the beat in twos.
New van has once locked itself fortunately I was in it at the time. now make sure I have my keys in my pocket at all times. our central locking/opening sometimes doesn't open the habitation door, can be a bit of a faff, I have the non remote keys.

Ok, so heres a tale of woe....
I have a 2016 Chausson with a Transit cab. I was in Spain camped up by a lonely beach. It rained all through the night so all windows were shut so were all the vents. In the morniong I get up, put a kettle on the gas hob to make a cuppa, opened the hab door and took a step outside to get a breath of fresh air. I am pretty certain that I clicked the hab door and closed it properly. A big gust of wind came along and the hab door slammed shut. No problem I thought but the hab door had slammed shut and locked itself. Unbelievable. Anyway I thought I could probably gat in somegow but nope it was fimly secure all round. I was trying all the options I had which wasn't much when I heard the kettle start whistling. This was now getting serious. Only option left was to brak my way in. Stones bricks anything I couild lay my hands on I threw at the van but it stood firm. I speak little Spanish but a passer by saw my problem came over and as I had also left my mobile in the hab (perfect storm here!) the man kindly called the local Bomberos (Fire Service) and within 5 minutes they were there. They saw and heard what the problem was there was six of them and they were crawling over the van to try and get in. The chief asked me where the outside gas isolator was and I had to tell him there wasn't one (Chausson Please Note this) Anyway having tried all their options they decided to break a quarter drivers side window. They managed it but it was pure luck that they had one man enough to brak the window because believe me the glass on that Transit is like steel. I unlocked the drivers door got in and turned the gas off . All the water in the kettle had burned away and the kettle was begining to burn through. So I was left with an unsecure van with glass all over the place. I took the van into La Linea and the local main dealer for glass replacement hoovered it out for me cut a hardenned plastic piece to go into the quarter light and then two days later when the glass arrived fitted it for me. Excellent job they did and it came to Euro 150.So now a spare hab cey is taped underneath the body and I've fitted an isolater valve for the gas. I've heard from a couple of Chausson owners about getting locked out in similar circumstances.

Unbelievable that everyone is talking on open forum about keys hidden on their vans🤔

Oh PLEEEEEESE...

What is the likelihood of naughty people scouring the internet forums looking for folk who have motorhomes with keys hidden on the outside (like me).

Even if they did, they wouldn't know which van it was, where it was, where the key was hidden and whether there was anything worth pinching.

I reckon some people must really, really enjoy getting their knickers in a twist if they worry about stuff like this!

No I don’t get them in a twist as in a previous life I was a crime reduction officer for Wilts Police.
My concern was not for any specific person but to advertise there are folk out there that hide keys on their vans just gives thieves more options and it’s bad practice, especially in UK.😊

Did crime go down under your watch?

I don’t know the current stats but back in the day Wiltshire was the safest county in UK less crime than anywhere. 👍
