East Scotland anything there ?

Why are the ferry trips over there so expensive though ?
Would have liked if more time to get pembroke to roslaire ferry then after touring get ferry belfast to SW port in scotland and tour before similar route back but time is not available to do it justice yet, so road trip this time starting Thursday.
They are 'expensive' but to be fair the distance is probably double at least the Dover/Calais crossing so obviously more time, fuel etc adds to the cost, and of course it doesn't have so much competition to keep the prices down. You can use Tesco vouchers against some of the crossing/operators (it used to be a max of £110 each way I think) and of course you don't have to pay for dogs which for us alone saves about £150 (3 dogs' crossing cost + vet check).

We were at a site near Cairnryan a couple of weeks ago and whilst out with the dog bumped into a local and we started to chat (as you do). He said that there was a cheapie on one of the ferries at the moment, not sure if he meant Belfast or Larne, for a fiver!. Needless to say it was for foot passengers though.

I heard that on local radio too, £5 foot passengers closest port to ireland is pembroke since the cork ferry stopped running from here.

3 days to go mh all clean had its annual bath the weekend, got guy coming to fit new reversing camera kit on wed, need bottle of gas ive got 5 empty bottles  .

Finish work tomorrow then heavy swotting on where to stop after edinburgh near st Andrews then further up before cutting into the cairmgorns ? Il be studying closer all the info on here from you lovely people and a few other threads in combination with a map to makes sense of it all in my head .

Got mot out the way early cos it would run outwhile away but no probs it flew through it, all that wax oil i smothered underneath it is doing its job or hiding any sins :p.

Favoured stops will be right at the waters edge we had some great spots on the west side last year, and after reading wild bills wilding thread and others i think ive got a rough plan now forming

First night stop halfway chester cl

Weekend in Edinburgh
Sunday head for st Andrews if can find good stop near or other area is an option 2 or 3 hours north east of edinburgh?

Maybe Aberdeen if close enough to see the sights.

Maybe Dundee as above mainly cos their the 2 main cities up that way?

Anything in between thats of interest or that is nice to stop at for the night

Head in to the cairngorns hope to find wilding stops maybe a cl or small site even, aviemore is in my mind ? Couple of other stops there may be nice.

Head for inverness, stock up and maybe a site or cl ? Before south side of loch ness i read not much if any wilding stops there now?

West islands if time is with us Arran and other maybe.

Work way down west coast stopping different places to previous years trying to dodge the whacky racers road around loch lomond .

Dumfries and Galloway has been on list a while so hope theres time to check it out for a few days this time.

Probably head south after one or 2 stops on way home breaking journey into 3rds to home ?

So thats my rough plan with much more in between and bits altered no doubt, il compare it to what we actually do when we're back. :)

Are you just wild camping or do you intend to use sites? Just south of St Andrews is Crail, site is Sauchope Links. Right on the sea front overlooking Isle of May with Bass Rock in the distance, great views etc. North of Aberdeen is Fraserburgh with it's Lighthouse Museum if you're into that sort of thing. Loch Ness south side has the C&CC site on the shoreside. Good walk up the hill to Foyers, passing the Falls of Foyers en route. Nice walk up through woodland. Carrying on westward to Fort William you'll find a good site inland, Glen Nevis which is at the foot of Ben Nevis (surprise)! Spectacular views and if you're feeling fit you can see how far up it you can get. Skye is nice too, a while since we were there. Free bridge across to it now, it was a short trip on a small ferry when we did it years ago. Just remember your midge repellent/face nets, the west side can get a bit iffy when it has rained and there is no breeze! :cautious:

Did skye last year and quite a few times in the past so may give it a miss this time to see more places weve not been too.
Thanks for the spots you mentioned il lok for them on map, and i hope the midge repelants help ive been caught in swarms of em before not much fun ;)

If you go to the top there is Durness, Sango Bay and Dunnet Bay (CC). Know what you mean re the knees!

Made it to first stop over at beech farm cc,cl warrington rd near chester. Very nice spot new toilet n shower block waste n water and ehu £16 a night, not bad considering a lot of cl's are a feild and a tap if lucky :D2
Trip up through mid wales was good only 4.5 hours with breaks but very slow traffic onto A55 only 8 miles from here !
Of to edinburgh in the morning :)

Try Fortrose just north of Inverness in the Black Isle, not the CC site. Daughter just back from a week there and reports favourably, right on the shoreline.

Scratch that, I found a good sounding CL just outside Chester ehu and other facilities only £16 beech farm.

Was there earlier this year. 10 minute walk along golf course to the point for dolphin watching. You can return along the other side via the C&CC site.

Just got back from the mile we used the sites minibus service, great guy driving named Graham, gave us a bit of a tour and rang him when done he came to us and stopped off at great chippy he knows on the way back for a fish supper.
we did Hollyrood palace and the shops etc and got our girl a set of real bagpipes that she's been wanting to learn for a while tho they will have to stay at grannies house when home  piddled down most of the day so glad to be back in the van now.

You dont say when you're coming but there is a meet in Fife at Auchtermuchty 15 to 17 September see rallies Scotland meet in Fife, you will be very welcome.
Pity I didn't know earlier, that's the time I'm down with Eddie getting my Strikeback Growler fitted, maybe next time.

We're going to st Andrews tomorrow, google earthed it and found coaches and a mh parked up not far along front from aquarium so hope it will be ok for a wilding stop ?
Back up plan is a site to the side of the town thats showing space for a night or two .

No reply yet so il check again in morning  the other guy said hes her often but a while ago upto 50 vans were on here regularly so someone got the hump and put the signs up !
Had a look around the town the ruined huge cathederal is interesting as was the castle so after another look around tomorrow we are heading to Forfar :)

Got a reply this morning !

Dear Mr welsh man.

You should have received an automatic reply to advise you that you would not get permission to park on the area known as west sands.
I attach some further information on our bye laws and the Scottish Outdoor access code. Further details on the Access code can be obtained from the Outdoor Access Officer at Fife Council, Sarah.Johnston@fife.gov.uk

The west sands is an area enjoyed by multiple users but it is not a campsite and should not be used as one.

Kind regards,

Gordon Moir

There are barriers much further up westsands rd for cars only, which may be so mh wild campers are not out of view and if they wanted to tell us to move on, its not so far for them to go, as there are only 2 of us plus one nearer the club house perhaps they didnt check also it being a Sunday ?
Anyway id stop here again. Moving on to Forfar in a while.

In Stonehaven now c.c again cos it's the only site here and well located sea water swimming pool heated to 28 degrees that we will be going for an evening swim 8pm till 12am wednesday's only. Walked dogs on beach and along front , small town center with few shops again (y)
There's a circus here and fair behind us in leisure center grounds. Last night had fish supper from sea front chippy . long queues so must be popular but expensive and nothing special imo !
Piddling down today but supposed to ease off this afternoon . Will take a walk to the harbour and visit Tollbooth museum later. Guy next to us on for far site works there so will get a tour from him.
Hoping time to visit Donnatar castle before we leave.

You can walk along the shore front to get to the harbour.
On the road past the chippy, bowling green and over the pedestrian bridge.
There's a boardwalk so you're off the sand \ pebbles.
From memory there's a wee area with sculptures and benches for a sit down and watch the world go by.

Had 2 nights wild camping on Aberdeen sea front the harbour end it's great there.
Then a night in Balmoral castle coach park free again, even saw the queen twice close up as she went to church opposite and back, walk around Balmoral was nice too.
Wildng in nice spot in Timitoul highest village in cairngorms, good fo9d in the 3 hotel / pubs around the corner.
Off to a site tomorrow for a couple of nights to get ehu n sort stuff. At Silver sands site in Loosiemouth.

Pics on phone not as good as camera but you get the idea ?

I say ! Yes you ! Get oarf moi land !

Is his grey waste tap open !

Did 2 nights at losiemouth silver sands site it was ok for a commercial site nice chippy but not fussed on the club house, the beach is good there and the lighthouse next door looked good lit up at night in different colours.
The jets from the raf base next door were intersesting seing them so low n close.

Went strait to Culloden battle field Wednesday after run around with sat nav took us the back lanes past it for a while ! Very intetesting and atmospheric place with a dark history.
Then back up the road a short run to culloden moor cc site for the night, a nice site with good dog walk in the forest.

Arrived after a few site seeing stops at the ccc site on the shores of loch ness, lovely camp site on the waters edge, and the venison burgers and cheese things on scewers from the aluminium airstream food van were excellent !

Heading towards fort william tomorrow for supplies then find somewhere for the night maybe further on.
Il stick a few pics off phone on later.

And in answer to my original question. Yes there were lots of great places and things to do and see on the east side of Scotland. So much so that another trip up that way would be worth it in future. (y)
