Steve and Nade were here a couple of days ago and Steve said he had a problem with getting into 5th gear. I just thought the thread might help him with a solution

I think his van is around the year 2000 manufacture, Fiat 2.8 from what I remember and don't quote me on that as engine talk tends to make me

I just took the cover off and two of the ball bearings in the brand new synchro are sat in the sump. Not good news.
Now I need a puller to pull fifth gear off because it is so tight.
I think there is movement inside the box on the shaft that holds the cogs, probably a bearing failed inside.
£200 down the swanee....
I will limp it back to UK and get a recon box. 12 Months warranty will make me feel more comfortable. I think it's about £1000 for a recon box and clutch fitting. IT'S ONLY MONEY

Sorry to hear of your gearbox woes.
I'm a mechanical numpty where such things are involved so no use to you whatsoever but I hope you get sorted soon .
I should add that I think of this thread every time I go to select 5th. So far no problems but I do nurse it a bit now.

If I get a recon box I will still sell it. It has upset me too much. At least new owner will get 12 months warranty and piece of mind.

I won't be leaving the motorhome world forever, I love this life.
I will be seeking something newer. If I work hard for a year and save my pennies I can get a decent bus, with a 6 speed box.
I am only 57 and don't get my pension for another 9 years.
