Drinking water onboard options

From the tank.

It's new, and small, but tastes fine.

Mostly Stockport's finest corporation pop, some of the softest water in the UK.

I recall reading that it was not advised to refill the disposable water containers you buy from the supermarket, as mains water leaches stuff from the plastic that the spring water doesn't, maybe it's the chlorine?
The chlorine doesn't leach stuff off the plastic. The concentration of chlorine is way too low. The only issue is cracking and breaking up of the plastic. If you look after them, and keep them out if the sun, disposible water containers are fine to be used for many years.

Might well try it on a clean cycle.
I use citric acid to clean the washing machine every now and then. The instructions on the pack are to add 100g of citric acid powder in the powder locker and run the hottest program you have. Then run same program again with your usual washing detergent to remove any residue left behind.
Dishwasher get the same treatment but with 30g and no second empty run needed.

4l milk bottles refilled with fresh water from suitable tap and used for personal consumption. Water kept fresh and easily refilled, even decant from supermarket bottle in energency. Main tank used for all other purposes. Works for us.

We use 2 x 5 litre plastic containers for drinking water ( tea coffee etc) but bottled water if we want drink water

We use the onboard tank to drink out of all the time. I empty the on board tank if its sat for more than a week or so. When I fill her up after she's been sat for a while, I spray the tank out & let plenty of water drain straight through.

I also use Puriclean once a year or so & simply wipe any tap I fill up from with a soapy cloth.

Ill drink from the onboard tank but we generally use 3 x 5 litre plastic bottles from supermarkets which I just fill from wherever and a 25 litre carrier with a tap as a spare. The main objective being it just gives us extra water and I can carry all four on the scooter (40 litres) which is handy when wilding or miles from any tap.

We used to drink from the tank, until, the 3rd time, I took unwell with diarrhea, I figured out what was causing it, now we use a 5l water container with a tap that doesn't leak, this one, £21 from Amazon.

Anything you store drinking water in and continually reuse should be given a 24 hr soak in chlorinated water once a year, then flushed out with a couple of refills of water before use. Cheap bleach is basically Sodium Hyper chlorinate

Water tank on board serves the kettle. Drinking water is still or fizzy mineral water from a supermarket.

just a quip on your comment;
Some just use the water filter jug with a charcoal filter installed, giving 30 x days use per filter. Easy peasy and cheap as chips. (y)
Ha ha, got it now thanks  and yes, very witty. 😂

Yb

You did say in your post Jock "as cheap as chips"
Yep, I was looking out of the box Lenny.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Hi All, I wisely see that most people use their inboard water tanks for washing-up, showering etc BUT not really for drinking.

What do you all use to carry your drinking water in & what size containers for 2 people ideally?

Keen to see your favourite container types, storage permitting.

Thks

Mark
We got ours from Asda we carry 3 x 5L bottles and we fill from Fresh Water taps and decant into a 1L bottle into the fridge.

IMG_3376.webp Bought late last year so not used it much.
Filters last 3 months. Hoping it’ll save all those plastic throwaway bottles. We drink a fair bit of water.

Start a journey with 2 or 3*5l and use them to top up smaller bottles in the fridge or fill the kettle. 3 gives a bit of leeway if you are off-grid for a few days. Refill from site taps where you can have some confidence that no-one has had their loo cassette close by.

Anyone has a tap/pump for 5 litre water bottle ?

As per my post #55 above:

Either sold in nearly all supermarkets in France and Spain or a Chinese shop - for just a couple of €. If desperate then Amazon or eBay but more expensive.

We just buy a 6 pack of 1.5L bottles which probably last 5 days and then replenish as there is always a supermarket somewhere near. We don't tend to wild camp, so it works for us.

I always use the tank, don’t see the point in faffing with bottles.
Yep, I'm with you. A bit of crud keeps the immune system on it's toes. I use Puriclean a couple of times a year.

To be fair, as I think I've said previously, most of the water we drink has either been boiled for a brew, or come via a brewery or vineyard.

Ok

So I thought this we going to break the bank but for £48.99 I've now got two jobs to do when the weather is better

And

Cheaper from them direct ( they supply B&Q) and free postage https://www.finerfilters.co.uk/3m-a...MImNudt5ziiwMVfZNQBh0Xig3TEAQYASABEgJUo_D_BwE

My goodness all this talk about drinking from tanks and taps….we prefer our water in a glass 🥃

Hi JockandRita.
I dose my tank with Milton after every trip and run some through the lines ( OR just before a trip) then empty out and refill and run fresh through the lines.
Havn't got a filter.
BUT, my wife can still smell Milton and she has cll (on watch and wait). So we also take bottled water for her.
And we have 2 x 10L containers which We fill up with fresh water from home, again they are sterilized after every trip.
We often use white vinegar around the house for cleaning/disinfecting.
Would that be a good alternative ?
My brothers doctor told him to clean his c-pap machine with white vinegar. Same kind of potential issues as in MH water systems, though smaller scale.

Anybody use UV filtration on their potable water system?

Not bought or installed yet - but yes, that's what I'm planning on using along with a carbon filter and some sort of pre filter at the fill up probably.
