Are the elephants and giraffes appropriate or relevant to your travels?
Personally, I'm not a fan of this sort of art work on a motorhome, but, as others have said, you should go for it if you like it.

That's a tough one big yin as those type of things are always a personal choice, what about a graphic? Or even a graphic image painted, and more generalised as opposed to an African scene something like any of these...
I thought the Sprinter or the On an Adventure one would be OK with the Niesmann name or letters there...

I’m not a fan of such graphics but that doesn’t look bad. It’s far more restrained than most. I’d say go for it - a bonnet respray would soon sort it in the future if you decided to sell.

Obviously folk didn't read the post . If I was selling the van in the future the bonnet would need painted anyway as the finish at present isn't great. Hence doing a painting on it just now because either way the bonnet will need painting again later

Your logic is sound Tam. You know that the blemish will continue to bug you and the art will remove that annoyance.

The only things that you need to consider are;

  • Is it the right artwork?
  • will your chosen artwork wear well (and I’m thinking particularly that you like to keep a clean MH so will you be able to wash/polish it without it deteriorating)?
Ian

If you had the artwork done I wonder how much it would cost  instead of spending the money on that how about saying to the bodyshop you used can you paint the bonnet again for £35 or £50. Its easier to do a nice job on one panel than various areas around a van, you would still have a cheep job done but it wouldnt keep bothering you.

PS and they would know the colour they used

This is definitely Marmite Tam,

I’m with CaptainPaul something more graphic / general perhaps.
You changed the lower colour of the van to make it look more classy and you have done that. So Why not live with what you have for a while and give yourself more time to consider what you really want.

Get them to repaint the bonnet while your there , job done with no future concerns
Tell him your not happy with the job , pay him a small amount to respray the bonnet,
Probably not cost any more than a mural

Roger S posted my thoughts as I was typing 😊 , I’m getting slow in my old age lol

Tam, consider asking him to blow it over with some clear coat. He should be able to mix it to whatever gloss level you want. It will protect the paint and reduce discolouring as it ages.

The thing is them painter boys are far from cheap, the good ones are pricey enough for Morocco, I got a Berber Amizigh figure painted on my last van and it was €30 for literally 3 brush strokes! It was me was stroked as I thought a tenner was plenty! 🤣

Could you not take the bonnet of the vehicle and they can redo the bonnet now, without masking the vehicle again, they messed it up so let them fix it? Then make a decision on graphics?

Yeah get a haggis in a kilt on it🤣🤣🤣🤣

Why not just take it off and get them to paint it while you're there?
Take what off? If you mean the bonnet they can't get it right on the van lol never mind off of it.

So there's a good chance I'd have to paint it myself again later as it will always be the most noticed blemish.

Hence the thought of getting artwork done now as either way I'd have bonnet done again if I was ever selling the camper

That painting cost £30 Paul

The bonnet needs redoing so either way it’s going to cost. So it’s down to what you want while you own the van. A white bonnet but needs painting and it will bug you it needs painting while you own it or a bonnet with painting on which could possibly need painting when you resell but while you own it you like it. 👍

It just needs to be done again, sand it down and start again, the fact they messed it up first time doesn’t mean they would mess it up again, and yes I would have thought that taking the bonnet off would be much easier to resoray just that part

I suspect that any one of us would not like about 90% of such work we’ve seen, often because the execution was a bit dodgy. We all remember the 10% but how to identify the budding Michelangelo among the pretenders?

I know an anatomically incorrect giraffe would, for instance, irritate me. And everyone would know it’s there too, the bloody stretched okapi. We all remember the shit taxidermy we’ve seen but how we laughed at that lion…

My sense would be that it may be best to either have the bonnet redone properly while you are there (even at additional expense), or to choose a design that is sufficiently abstract and lacking in detail that it would be difficult to mess up.

Or to hire El Banksy but if you don’t like his work just to have it sprayed over.

So guys my brain has been thinking again..

This will gather much differing opinions I expect but here goes

So the van now looks good , I have to admit the bonnet is not perfect. There's a few patchy bits you can see when the sun hits it. He polished it up yesterday and managed to burn through a bit and had to blow it in which left a visible patch which I had him attempt to polish again , and while it's better I can still see it. Because I know its there.

Now I plan to keep the camper for a while, the bonnet isn't perfect and I'd possibly need to repaint it in the future

So

When here 2 years ago the geordie couple I travelled with had this painted on their bonnet which I really liked

And that led me to thinking that if I was ever going to have some art on a van this would be the time to do it as

A) it would draw the eye away from the blemishes on the bonnet
And
B) if I was going to repaint the bonnet in the future anyway then it would matter either way.

So I'd like thoughts either way as I am undecided but I really liked that painting.
How about a vinyl image rather than a painting? It'll be cheaper and probably look a lot better.

Go for it 👍

Morning Tam. I’m in the 90%. But I think it looks a beautiful motorhome for over 20 and I prefer to see it looking like it does now. I do understand your frustration about it not being prestige but like so much - it’s probably in your head/eyes and not others.

Whatever you decide it’s your choice - as it was before you asked us all. You knew you would get conflicting remarks.

Go for it BUT only if you can see the artists work and are happy with it. Pay a really good price for the top guy or KEEP YOUR PURSE closed. Nothing worse than a bad job

Now can you find that person?

Look forward to your decision. - me I’d live with it or pay for another repay.

I love that Tam ,I think you should go for it .It will make the van stand out a bit and it is not tacky or completely individual ,like say getting a Scottish flag on it.
When you sell it on , it wouldn't cause any issues 👍. Glad the paint job turned out ok for in the end

Cheers Cris 🍻
