Woah there. I was just adding some information.

You need to take a chill pill ;)
And I was just trying to highlight some reasons why I use w3w.

I was nevertheless interested in your pointing out location can be shared it WhatsApp, which I wasn't previously aware of so it's on my to-do to investigate & educate myself on exactly how to do that so thank you.

Sorry if you thought I was being offensive, can't quite see why though.

Does that send your location to the ambulance service?
And what if you want to send notification in advance as to where you want to meet people?
Or exactly which entrance to the forest park is best?
have a read of the links as it will explain the technology.

Meeting up with people has never been a problem and I do not need technology to do so.

Best place to park? Exact entrance to a forest? If you need that you shouldn’t go in as you would get lost ;)

In a real emergency people panic even W3W you have to launch the app and read the words but if you just dial the emergency service they will come and get you. AML is built in to the network and mobiles

If my phone was borked I wouldn't know Mindy's mobile number. If I had access to a device then I could email.

This is interesting and I'm very happy that you're very happy.

However, I am also very happy that when I was having a heart attack in a location to which I could not give directions and despite my being on the phone to them with all that other technology available, the ambulance dispatcher chose in preference to ask me if I could download the w3w app and I was able to say, ''it's ok, I already have it and my w3w location is....''

I'm of course even more happy that they got to me and that they and the wonderful hospital staff were able to 'fix' me while remaining cheerful and lovely despite the crappyness of their wages and working conditions and the appaling rate of suicide among paramedic staff.

Isn't it wonderful that people with differing views and preferences are all able to use this forum without acrimony. Cripes, there must even be some socialists here...

I’ve always found W3W useful, except when we had a blowout on the M6 earlier this year and the recovery van driver had never heard of it!

You shouldn’t need to use W3W on a motorway.

These markers are placed every 100 metres alongside the side of motorways, the number locates your position and direction of travel to the authorities to within 100 m and they also show the shortest walk for the motorway emergency phone.

Phones are placed opposite each other on each side of the carriageway to dissuade

Yep…we gave him those too. He didn’t know what they meant either. A very frustrating experience!

Good to hear you had help and recovered.

I guess each to their own, imagine the scenario where someone has a heart attack manages to dial 999 then passes out W3W is then a chocolate tea pot. Automated locations services is paramount if we truly want technology to work for us it should be automated, seamless and not require intervention of an app.

Of course what Apple Android and the telcos collaborating in automatic location services have done which helps save lives and a brilliant social application of technology to save lives.

Just looking
Not seen mentioned in this thread but W3W is also much better at finding a location than Maps. Maps does not know where every location that you know of but W3W does and if you click the navigate button after you have the required W3W it will convert it to a format that Maps will use, even if it has no idea of the location name. Then it loads the location into your nav App and away you go.

This can be handy but surely only if you can walk what must be 50 metres on average?

Good point!

And some hotels and campsites have started giving the w3w location alongside the address. Probably others but that's the two I remember seeing.

Sounds daft, but when we travel, quite often we are not sure of our exact address! This came to the fore when I was ill the other winter, somewhere in Spain. We realised that if Paul had to call for an ambulance he might not remember where we were! We now have a small white board on the bathroom door, & I try to remember to put the name of the campsite/stop and also the what three words location. That way if either of us are in a panic, we have the information to hand. Obviously worse when abroad, but still useful in the UK for the exact location. 🤷
Good old detailed paper maps, put a circle on where your parked.
Might come in handy at a later date.
Bugger this tech stuff! 😄

Just a tad..
Good thinking by the OP… like it!

Avid W3W user and Google maps.. I pin our MoHo when we stop.

The topic reminds me of one particular evening in some city somewhere… got off a long flight, dropped bag in room and left hotel with key card. Went out for the usual ‘boring as crap’ business dinner, then jumped in a cab (jet lagged and knackered as usual) without my phone (no idea where it went!!). Then couldn’t remember the hotel name, keycard was no logo white job, phone had my itinerary… yes you guessed it, had to drive to several hotels before we found the right one…

Then had all the fun with the night porter trying to get him to tell me my room number!

Phone turned up the next morning, on charge in the room! 🤦‍♂️

Earlier this year we visited Alberobello in Italy.
Parked up the van and wandered off through a myriad of back streets to see the Trulli houses.
After a few hours of wandering around, we started to head back to the van, but where the hell had we parked it?, luckily I remembered that the app for the tracker was on my phone and bingo ......... the marker on the map .......... that's where it is. :ROFLMAO:

I can never recall the places I’ve been!

But more seriously

WHAT THREE WORDS

Widely used by emergency services in the UK, not sure how widespread elsewhere.

Even if you don’t plan on using it, it’s well worth downloading it and keeping it for emergencies.
As I discovered this year the French emergency services use, and encourage the use, of What Three Words.
