DIESEL 65p a GALLON

Frightening when you can remember it being 5 Bob a gallon :Eeek:
2/-6d, A Gallon on my way to work, 1952 BSA 350, Half a gallon would last almost a week, IF I didn't go anywhere else. Best bitter, about 1/-6d a pint. Half Pissed and a bus ride home for about 10 bob,

Do you know, when I were a lad you could get a tram down into t'town, buy three new suits an' an ovvercoat, four pair o' good boots, go an' see George Formby at t'Palace Theatre, get blind drunk, 'ave some steak an' chips, bunch o' bananas an' three stone o' monkey nuts an' still 'ave change out of a farthing.

and still people are stupid enough to believe that supermarket fuel is bad for your engine........

Maybe not for some, but with my last car cheap supermarket unleaded kept messing up the lambda sensor causing intermittent engine warning lights and misfiring. Switching to premium brand unleaded fixed that pesky problem. Much cheaper than getting the dealer to replace the sensor .. again.

Bitter at 10p a pint (Grotneys, yuk) when the landlord wasn't too fussy about my age or school uniform.

It is almost unbelieveable that a 1st Class stamp is going up to about 15 shillings in real money.

I believe bad maintenance of storage tanks under the supermarket forecourts that contaminated fuel which was the problem. Still, that doesn't stop me buying from Asda et al.

Just got me recalling but now very confused, do you remember the fuss when pumps couldn’t cope with going over 99.9p per gallon

now wondering if that is why we now pay per litre, or were we already paying per litre when that went over 99.9p?

And a tigers tail to hang on your mirror (y)
It wasn't many years ago up the road in Fuente Librilla, that an Esso station changed to Repsol & that was when the giant Tony the Tiger on the roof was removed .
20 capstan full strength
My bro-in-law use to work for W.D.& H.O.Wills & my christmas present was always 200 Capstan full strength, even though I didn0t smoke them normally. along with assorted lighters & stuff.

If you went over 99.9p your tank must have been overflowing.

When I worked in Saudi Arabia, in 1988, the price of petrol doubled overnight, petrol was 33 hallalas a litre, bottled water was 1 riyal a litre. 100 hallalas to 1 riyal and 5.2 riyals to £1.
Less than 7p a litre.

Not a big one for so called experts but many motoring correspondents highly recomend premium fuels..I try to run my vehicles on it and know i get a couple of miles per gallon more using it in my motorhome which covers the difference in price,,BUSBY..

Cant see how you can maintain a storage tank when it is buried in the ground..Many tanks years ago had the filler inlets in manholes which flooded and allowed water into the tanks but most supermarkets have inlet pipes above ground level now,,BUSBY.

I just about remember the red coupons. Was it 1/6p a gallon memory is starting to fail.?

Fuel storage tanks can be directly accessed via the manhole cover above it for when a cross over occurs or it requires maintenance , most tanks are located quite away from the dispensing area of the forecourt.

1964, my first car was a sit up and beg Ford Popular. Cheapest petrol was Jet 89 octane at 4/0 per gallon from memory about the same price as 20 Senior Service.

How times change.

Supermarket fuel isn’t bad it’s just not as good as the majors with the additives.

Im sure it was on here someone kept a detailed record of using say Shell against Supermarket.

The cost/mileage difference was pennies over many months.

You pays you’re money etc.

Does anyone remember that a lot of drovers had a shot of Redex then and for those with 2 strokers a shot of 2 stroke oil and the smell of Castrol R

I was told by a delivery driver of heating oil it’s near enough the same as pump diesel.

A tank full just needs a dash of parrafin?

We drove to Greece in 1972, threw a tent in the boot and caught a ferry from Hull. We spent £50 on fuel, 3 weeks and 4000 miles.
Barely out of school, 4 of us went on an adventure of a lifetime to Greece in 1974. Flew to Athens, boat to Kos. Camping on the beach opposite Turkey and the war started when the Turks invaded Cyprus. Expecting to be shelled any minute, we couldn't go anywhere. Had to wait it out for several weeks on a beach full of army manoeuvres. Trod on a sea urchin as well!

I run my plane on Tesco fuel, especially when you get vouchers for 5p/10p a litre off!
