damp repairs to kontiki

almost finished replacing and refitting all the vents, windows, etc, on the newly painted side, just the fridge flue and kitchen extractor left and ribber screw cover strips to put on. giong to have to replace all screws i used as the heads are a bit too wide for the screw cover strips, no biggie but a slight inconvenience.
weather has turned to crap so gonna have a chilled weekend and relax for a change before painting the opposite side.

What an amazing job you are doing. (y)
Just think about all the great adventures you will go on and make some amazing memories 🙂👍

My 1991 autostratus was the perfect van for me. Took a year out in Europe in it and loved every minute but it struggled hugely with leaks.

Wrecked a whole cupboard of books with water getting in after a storm in Riga. I really should have took on the work myself but I struggle with fiddly jobs like that and get impatient and frustrated. My loss as I could have enjoyed it like you are going to enjoy your van soon.

Fair play to yourself.

Like Lenny HB I've only just caught up with this thread and have to say what a cracking end result !
Must have been daunting at the initial outset ,and going forward finding additional problems on the way but your dedication is commendable and what a success story well done a pat on the back ! And a feather in your cap.

thanks but sadly there's still loads to do. i've still got to paint the other side, the rear and the overcab bit of the roof, got to rebuild kitchen, new floor, rebuild cupboards, wire up lights, re-upholster, make bed, blah, blah, blah. so yeah, be at it for a while yet.
maybe one day i'll get to use it. 😂

probably ready by june as i've still got damp repairs to the other side then a total renovation inside, flooring, decorating, upholstery, etc.
i was being very optimistic when i said that.
oh how naive i was.

Yep nevertheless I’m impressed, sounds like you need a second wind keep the enthusiasm every bit completed is a bit less and then enjoy that day will come ! (y) ;)

so its been a while, i had another round of painting, this time on the front part of the roof. it did decide to piss down 10 minutes after i put on the undercoat and a tree nearby decided to shed loads of seeds on my first topcoat, luckily the wind changed the next day so got it sorted eventually.
did a bit of light installation, the old lights were very dated and halogen so i got some nice led's also installed a dimmer switch to them. i used a piece of wire heated up with a gas torch to dig a tunnel through the polystyrene insulation so i could run the cables from the dimmer switch to the light.
this week i've been painting the dining area and kitchen so i can rebuild kitchen units. i also installed some peel n stick vinyl to the walls to cover up my repairs and make it more abuser friendly for cleaning.
still a way to go yet but slowly the light is shining from the far end of the tunnel.
excuse the mess in the van, i'm a bit stuck for space so i'm constantly moving crap and tools from one place to another. once i refit the blinds and boiler i will have space in my greenhouse to put all the crap thats now in the van.

That looks fab. Well done. I’m pleased when my skills run to fixing a new window catch.

still loads to do but its starting to take shape, i'm hoping we have one last dry spell before winter so i can get the outside rear end painted. after that is accomplished pretty much all the work left is inside apart from some minor cosmetics outside (which can wait till spring)

Looking great, well done. I wish I had the same practical skills as you obviously have.

That roof looks amazing, what did you paint it withthanks, i used a 2k polyurethane marine paint called "international perfection" i also used a single pack poly boat deck paint on the parts of the roof that you walk on as it has a matt finish with grip, a gloss finish would be a bit lethal for that part of the roof.

sorry, that last comment didn't quite work right, i'm not too good working this app for quotes sorry

still lots to do but the outside is nearly done, got another coat on a few hours ago, it looked like it was going to rain at one point which would have totally ruined my day but luckily it didn't, phew!
one more coat tomorrow and i can put the window back and re-attach the lights.

It looks superb. How much you wanting for her? 😂

so to update, been laying some vinyl floor tiles this week, used a bendy bull step edge to tidy up the edges, not finished yet but starting to take shape, got a before and after shot and will take another when its finished

looks like a STELLA glue you're using .
looking great, keep up the hard work old bean (y)
yeah the STELLA glue keeps my brain from falling to pieces. touch wood i'm over the worst but this repair/refurb/revamp has been one of those jobs that starts off simple then multiplies into a behemoth. STELLA has kept me going, though she was responsible for a few errors due to her intoxicating influence on my operation of power tools. 😂😂

well got a bit more done, hung all the cupboard doors, built a wooden frame to cover the window opening as i broke the plastic trim trying to re-fit it. (20 odd years of sunlight had made it brittle).
still loads to do but she's slowly taking shape.

been making the most of the daylight before daylight savings is finished, managed to get screw covers done on all the openings. bit of a shitty job as a lot of my doors and hatches are a bit bent and dented, started off by softening rubber in a bucket of hot water but had to use a heatgun on the curved sections. got there in the end and it does make hell of a difference. also closed the fridge flue hole as i'm getting a compressor fridge, i cut a piece of plastic and gled it with sikaflex before fitting the vent cover. if i'd planned a bit better i would have sealed it properly and fibreglassed it before painting the van but i didn't plan swapping fridges at that point, ah well.

been a while since i last posted, had a week off work before xmas due to bad weather so made some headway on the dining/seating area, also fitted a new diesel heater, new boiler, b2b charger and some new electrics ( usb chargers and led's).
got the kitchen area to hit next, build cupboards, install a new compressor fridge, new oven, new sink and worktop then lots of little jobs to get the old girl finished, starting to see light at the end of the tunnel now.

starting to see light at the end of the tunnel now.
haven't you been reading the threads on the cost of seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, lots of people are suggesting the ferry is a much better option ....

Brilliant work !!

Been reading a few of the articles from obviously skilled, patient people that take the time to do the job right. Would have made a great series on YT instead of the usual rubbish. Well done and good luck for 2023.
