Covid test required to enter UK

Do I understand this correct? If just prior to return to the UK you unfortunately test positive to COVID then you cannot return until you show a negative test? In the worst case this could be up to 90 days before the virus leave the body even if it I no longer active? And where would you stay with a Motorhome, presumably campsites would also insist on a negative test? Food for thought or have I missed something?

We are due to take the ferry from Portsmouth on 6th January to Santander returning to uk around 28th March. Silly us for believing it might be any better when we booked and when we were told our jabs would protect us. It's become a dogs breakfast now with the latest changes. The requirements are changing almost daily and having the 2 jabs plus a booster is not even considered relevant at all . At this rate most travel companies and plane operators will not be around in a few months. Though this will probably boost Boris's green credentials I'm sure. He will apparently decide whether Xmas is to be cancelled on 18th December. Good one ......keep em guessing.

When people are travelling for holidays I don’t really think any of us can complain about the costs of tests going into and out of the U.K. or other countries and the fact that the rules keep changing. Surely people should factor that in by now, Covid has been with us for nearly 2 years.

I’ve just cancelled my trip to Barcelona with darling daughter from 16-20 th December, it’s my choice. I’d paid for day 2 tests so lose that but I “chose” not to risk getting a positive test in Spain and being stuck there for Christmas, what a logistical nightmare that would be . The family would be devastated.

I’d paid extra to be able to cancel the hotel, EasyJet flights can be pushed back to March, we will not use them as Claire will be in Bangladesh but it’s our choice and was always a gamble. Let’s just just hope she makes it home from there next Sunday, I’ll be a nervous wreck!

Let’s all hope Omicron proves to be not too bad but surely it’s better to over react than under react.

We are still in self isolation awaiting the results of our PCR test. Should be here today sometime.
Phil

Other countries are doing the same so its just not Boris..Our government like most others act only on medical advice. If it doesn't suit tough but nothing we can do about it.We had Xmas last year but just with a few regulations which really didn't spoil it.BUSBY.

Its a test that you have to do before you get on a plane, train, boat or whatever. You had to do a test in September to get onto the EuroTunnel and upload it into the passenger locator form. So what's different now? It's not a political conspiracy. Either do it or stay put, quite a simple choice really.
Sorry I didn’t mean to respond 🤦‍♂️

Could you name any major world event people haven't made money out of. It's a bit like thinking the storm never happened last week because they sold a lot of fence panels.

'If you can't afford it don't go' appears to me to be judgemental, and unnecessary. Also, the OP ignores the potential for M/Homers abroad for, say 6 weeks or longer, to be caught by an acceleration of COVID infections in UK that leads to a requirement for people to return from France or Spain at short notice and be obliged to use quarantine hotel accommodation at £5k+ per couple. That might well take the cost of the trip beyond affordability, especially if the individual is of working age and facing the possibility of reduced or even lost earnings

IIRC, the Funster making this comment had problems with air suspension recently; I don't recall seeing any replies to his problem along the lines 'You should have stuck with the original kit if you couldn't afford full air suspension'. I'm an atheist but 'Let him who is without sin ...' is floating around my head. A bit of kindness at the moment wouldn't go amiss. Dismounts soapbox gingerly, for fear of breaking an ankle ...

Do you really need to lose that money? The rules have changed from LFT to PCR therefore the LFT tests are no good to you. You should be able to get a refund.

We chose to use a different company for the PCR as the one we'd bought the LFT from hadn't sorted out an upgrade when I contacted them and were more expensive for the PCR test than another company who I used. It's certainly got to be worth asking for a refund! The worst they can say is NO!

If you can afford to run a motorhome/pay for a holiday abroad .. you can afford a couple of tests.
I know this sounds morbid but it is how I feel..
I am 72.. Every year is a bonus... I have no idea how many more ( if any ) years 'er and me will be physically able to travel
Its not about money ( even though I think the statement you make is a little crass and there are PLENTY of folk who have to really scrimp and save to run a van ), its about life and running out of it

It would seem to me that we are still in the midst of a pandemic, a winter increase was widely forecast and a likelyhood of rule changes with it.
This made all international travel risky and if the consequences are unaffordable then the obvious solution would be not to travel.
We reside in Portugal, we have family and friends in the UK that we have visited twice for short periods in the last 2 years when the restrictions were eased.
We would not contemplate a return for a longer period if we could not guarantee that we could get back and have no plans to return to the UK until restrictions ease or are revoked altogether.

On a side note we must also remember that many who want to travel abroad wish to do so to visit families that they haven't seen for the last couple of years and it must be heart breaking for them not to be able to afford to go especially as some of the people who they maybe wanting to see may not be here next year.

Here's an idea... why don't you all stay in the UK and avoid all the stress you're putting yourselves under.
Ha ha ha yeah right.

Better to escape plague island for as long as you can regardless of what trumped up nonsense they create next.

I wonder how many years this is going to continue before people say no more

Annual vaccines that do nothing but still restrictions on travel , mandatory tests etc etc etc

And still the one best source of information worldometers Coronavirus show the real figures of recovery , infection and deaths.

But the media never bothers to highlight the large recovery numbers.

Agreed but it works in both directions

They’d already sent the LFTs out so as soon as the rules changed they offered to upgrade them to PCR tests for the extra cost minus the £14.50 that the LFTs cost which wasn’t unreasonable to be honest. They said no refunds. They were postal ones and we suddenly thought with Christmas there was little chance of the results getting back in time for my daughter to go to Stockholm for NY. We had originally planned to drive from Bristol airport on our arrival back from Barcelona to Cabots Circus , get our PCR test done and then it would be back the next day. More expensive but our choice and we’d be free more quickly! Now of course we’re not going to Barcelona and she’s not going to Stockholm as she can’t risk not being OK to go back to Bangladesh on the 5th January!

Keeping fingers crossed she gets home on Sunday first of course, still doing our first trip to Cabot’s circus on monday for her PCR. She arrives at Heathrow just after the testing centres close which is annoying.

or are revoked altogether.
But they were revoked before only to return again ? Whilst they have the legislation in place that allows them to do what they want you will never have any type of guarantee.

Au contraire; 20 years ago I paid for my mother-in-law to spend Christmas in Spain. :giggler:

I did my duty on that front for many years, I deserve a medal although I say it myself although that pales into insignificance compared to having to put up with my loathsome sister-in-law!
Fortunately my children plus son’s lovely girlfriend seem to like me, mind you it’s probably just my cooking. She’s a chef at Jamie Oliver’s cookery school but loves my roasts, I think she’s glad just to have a break from cooking, a lovely Northern lass.

Some if us have family in Australia at our age will i ever see them again but what can i do about it . Nothing .

Agree. There are many of us with family abroad not seen due to Covid development. The Virus calls the tune and Governments and Science have to react and learn lessons. Fair play to the UK Government taking the early action they have this time and Science for what they have done too. We have made plans once again for next year but if cancelled it will be because of the Virus. Blaming individuals in Government is just dumping emotion.
