camping and caravanning since a kid. New to motorhomes
Been in Germany for the last 3 weeks, landed at the Hook, went to Arnhem and as far East as Colditz. Then down most of the Romantic road to Füssen and now routing west. Lots of places / sites in the North / East still wanted cash and some only cash. Fuel stations and big shops card is no problem. A fantastic Stellaplaz in Rothenburg for 15€ pn and sites from 20 -45€ but lots of stuff "extra" especially in the popular area. "Booking fees" up to 5€, waste charge, environmental charge, and all charge for ehu, some at a flat rate of 4€ and other over 1€ pkw. Some even want to charge to connect the EHU lead... Luckily we invested in Lithium last year so not hooked up since Arnhem when it was included in the price. Lots of areas charge tourist tax which is fine but that has included free bus travel around the area for the duration of your stay so good value. We have avoided all the rip off places just as we would anywhere else in the world. Shop around for diesel and easy 1.65€ pl, petrol for the motorbike is more but don't need a lot of that. Lidl Food prices are about the same as home but wine and beer cheaper. Eating out can be expensive and not a lot of cafes we have found do "snacks" so hunted out bakeries that do simple cheese / ham etc rolls for 3€ ish each.
In summary... prefer the South to the North for scenery, shop around for food and overall blinking marvellous.
Another week or so to go and could happily stop longer if we had the time. Oh and used more cash on this trip than ever before...
Looking at something similar in September.

Is there a site near to Colditz ?

Am also th inking the Mohne dam on the way. So looking for recommendations close to that too ?

Thanks
Graham

7 years campers before that
Its the price we pay for living in god's country 😁
Serously, 2.5 k! No chance.
I'm sure I priced this up from Hull and taking into consideration the mileage saved and the fact that we didnt stop in two campsites on the way down, the ferry won.

But not at those prices.

We are retired also, so like you say we will just make the drive down part of the holiday.

Weve just booked daytime crossing harwich to hook of holland with cand c discount 188 return

There is a Stellaplaz near the Castle but we used the campsite which is less than 30 min walk to town / Castle through the park.
Grumpy owner, cash only, clean but basic facilities.
The Castle tour is fantastic,10€ each and you get given a Ipad type tablet for an interactive tour. Make sure you fill up and empty before you go in as we easy did 3 hours inside, no cafe and the toilets are outside so be aware.
The Dam was on the list but sadly didn't get to do it this time.
Lots of sites and Stellplaz are not listed on Search for sites so Google maps & Stellaplaz app help for planning.

Yeah thanks for that €12 last year, but Mrs Westy would make me pay double, nay triple that to stay there🤭 I put a euro in for some water last year and got about 5 litres after about 10 mins, I gave up🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️
Water issues were reported last year but all sorted now, we took on nearly 100L pretty quickly. It is a great spot for sure and even the top car park was pretty full on the 2nd night.

We make the pilgrimage there twice or three times a year, this year will be no exception!
We use the Parkster app when we are around that area👍

Ta for the App tip. It is a wonderful town for sure and we will be back I am sure. Mrs Vans was less keen on wearing some of the stuff from the torture museum... can't think why... or why my dinner "tasted funny" the night after I made that suggestion. 🤣🤣

Last year we found significant variation in Stellplatz charges between regions- we were shocked by costs on the Baltic, where lots were €25+ a night.
The German Baltic coast is renowned for being a hot German holiday destination ,, some resorts are very expensive compared to rest of Germany , its their Riviera .

We are currently on the riverside Stellplatz at Magdeburg, €10 for 3 nights, up from 8 last year, coins at a drop down bollard gets you in. We have recently finished 10 days on the romantic road finishing up at Fussen which was the most expensive €25 with €20 without but included a free travel ticket which was very handy for getting about to castles etc.
Bad Tolz was a nice stop, we had the mother of all thunder storms which lasted for nearly 2 hours.
We night stopped on the Studentstat P&R in Munich which was €2 a space, we used 2 so 2 tickets. No services other than a grubby Toitoi. Access direct onto U6 from the carpark. Group day ticket good value if you want more than 4 singles.
From Munich we moved up to Bayreuth the free Stellplatz is good, the town centre architecture is great with plenty of eateries, and nice parks.
Tomorrow we move on to Berlin to meet up with the family and grandkids.
No fixed plans next week but if the weather is good we may head up to Northern Poland avoiding the German Baltic coast, any recommendations up there would be handy (y)
