OK, good luck finding a free program to rip modern DVD's, most will have copy protection. If you want to do it properly you need two things:

1. DVDFab 11 available from https://www.dvdfab.cn/

2. A nice compact hard drive that has plenty of space on it, I use 2 tb and 4 tb versions of the same hard drive which used to be made by Samsung but they sold their hard drive business to Maxtor/Seagate, available here:
Amazon product ASIN B01AJWNXAM
3. Of course you need a PC with a DVD drive as well to rip the movies.. I use .avi for my movies which I find works well via the £30 mini DVD player I have connected to my Avtex TV using HDMI (you should do a little research of Video formats before starting out.

Probably a bit late now, but one simple method would be

to record your DVDs on say VLC and then just transfer the file

when completed. Granted this may seem a bit time consuming,

but leave it chugging away on it's own, it doesn't matter if you record

after the content has completed.....ie DVD feature length 90 mins and

you record 120 mins. VLC will install a folder on your device to store recordings,

so access this and copy and paste your content to your external hard drive.

Top-tip... delete content from your VLC folder when you've transfered it...it soon clogs your lap top up.

Cheers.

just in case...VLC is a free open source media player.
