Coffee maker

Is that for 2 x espresso cups or 2 x proper coffee mugs :D2

without adding any extra water it would only be 2 x espresso cups however the extraction is strong and rich so easily increased to coffee mug size with extra water and milk but still tasting 'proper' (y)

So why not just use a 6 cup and put same amount of coffee in for 3 cup but more water? Then add milk at end.
6 cup on ebay is only £6 more than 3 cup.
Otherwise would also need to book a kettle to top up. Seems a long winded way to make a brew.
Will still to beam to cup machine at home, still considering Moka for MH

It won't work like that! The coffee 'vessel' has to be filled completely for the pot to pressurise. Any way, it's your choice. I'm not forcing you to buy one ;)

I know just asking anyhow just established 3 cup is 200ml 6 cup is 300ml and 9 cup is 550ml very strange
was curious now confused as cup size don't equate to ml
oh well
will keep researching and looking

Just read the original post. As others have outlined, there's proper coffee and convenience coffee.

Ideally, you buy Arabica green beans (most supermarket coffee is from the cheaper, Robusta beans), you roast them (12 minutes in a cheap roaster gives a light/medium roast), after 12 hours, grind them fine and immediately extract in your Expresso machine for between 25 and 35 seconds. Milk shouldn't be hotter than 65degC. Bags of aroma, taste and a large crema. Or grind coarse for a French press. All this is difficult in camper! A de Longhi Magnifica bean to cup machine is bulky but maybe feasible and makes excellent, real coffee from ground, pre-roasted Arabica beans.

Convenience coffee, whether supermarket or Costa, chain-type, is a huge compromise but unfortunately, usually necessary in a campervan where space is limited. Mokka stove top pots are maybe a good option but getting a crema is hard probsbly because the coffee grounds are usually weeks/months/years old and most/all of the oils have evaporated.

Wow the more I read this thread the more complicated it gets to make just 2 cups of cappuccino :)

I agree with so many of you, concerning making a good cup of coffee, in that at home I have every type of machine stuck in cupboards. I have the nespresso, I have the Rio Proffi (grinds beans, makes espresso, and has the steam pipe to froth the milk) I have the cafetiers 2 types, I have the latest new Aeropress cafetiere (not tried yet) but I use the old fashioned ali one that's sold all over europe, because I can put in the gas hob in the van. looking at most of your favourites, a lot of them rely on having a 240volt supply, which I dont want to rely on when we are away, when wilding with no EHU.
So all I can come up with, should I wish to make frothy milk type coffee,(for others) is a milk warming jug and a hand held battery whisk to whip up the milk to a foam., as I cant see any other way of making it in the van on 12 volt or gas.
PS: I love my coffee, but not 5% with warm milk with added, if that makes sense, hate Starbucks, love coffee served in France, Italy though:)
Thanks
for any suggestions.

I am lucky enough to have been bought a very expensive Miele bean-to-cup machine as a gift -- I would never have dreamt of spending that much on a machine. This has been working flawlessly for about 7 years. It is not as pretty as its Italian counterparts -- a case of form vs. function maybe. Relatives with Italian bean-to-cup machines have had problems, but these have been fixed under warranty anyway. However, having tasted the output, I still favour the Miele. The Miele machine is very configurable and produces coffee way better than I have had in any of the chains.

Shame it is too big to take on the road, though, and mains-powered, so we rely on a Bialetti-type stove-top maker in the van (and are always disappointed compared with the coffee at home).

I think @JeanLuc has hit the nail on the head, though, when saying that freshly ground quality beans is the most important factor. Pre-ground coffee just doesn't compete.

I cast my mind back to the days way before the world of coffee chains and baristas when the more up-market department store cafes would grind on demand a bean of your choice and make coffee from it in an individual cafetiere. And it tasted great!

Why has the simple, sustainable technology of the cafetiere been abandoned, I wonder? I am tempted to take a hand grinder and a cafetiere away in the van with some quality beans and see what it produces.

I know, my heads buzzing as well (n):punch:

Nespresso home and away - brilliant
Do you have any top tips please? We purchased the larger Nespresso machine at the weekend as you can now make a mug of coffee. But three mornings in, trying a different pod each time we have yet to share a contented smile.
We use semi skimmed milk, perhaps full fat or creamer might make it a smoother drink ?

Nespresso is for espresso sized serves.
The new Nespresso Vertuo, is for the American market, who prefer quantity over quality. It's a different process, centrifugal rather than pressure. More akin to filter.
I've always found coffee served in USA diners to be harsh... quantity over quality. No depth of flavour.

What were you expecting, and why don't you like it?

We have a Dolce Gusto. Nice coffee but the pods are expensive in the shops but much cheaper on Amazon.

I just buy the latte coffee pods, heat some milk in the microwave and froth it with a frother and then pour the coffee .

Just bought 50 pods for £9.50.
Aldi are now selling Compatible pods for Dolce Gusto

I think Lidl were selling them too, but I didn’t really like them.

I stick to my skinny latte from Amazon(y)

sorry we only take our coffee black. Have you the milk bolt on unit - we are told that makes a big difference.

An enjoyable coffee that is neither too sharp or strong, perhaps We should have dug deeper and got a bean to cup. Lots of various pods to try yet though, our perfect coffee might be nearer than we think.

Anyone ever tasted this kopi luwak coffee?
Is it really good or emperor's new clothes??
Kopi luwak (Indonesian pronunciation: [ˈkopi ˈlu.aʔ]), or civet coffee, is coffee that includes partially digested coffee cherries, eaten and defecated by the Asian palm civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus).[1] Fermentation occurs as the cherries pass through a civet's intestines, and after being defecated with other fecal matter, they are collected.

Producers of the coffee beans argue that the process may improve coffee through two mechanisms, selection – civets choosing to eat only certain cherries – and digestion – biological or chemical mechanisms in the animal's digestive tract altering the composition of the coffee cherries.

The traditional method of collecting feces from wild civets has given way to intensive farmingmethods in which civets in battery cage systems are force-fed the cherries. This method of production has raised ethical concerns about the treatment of civets due to "horrific conditions" including isolation, poor diet, small cages and a high mortality rate.[2][3][4]

Although kopi luwak is a form of processing rather than a variety of coffee, it has been called one of the most expensive coffees in the world, with retail prices reaching €550 / US$700 per kilogram.[5]

So, a pile of shite then!:)
Btw it’s ok but not worth the money imho.

We’ve had one of these and used it everyday for about 20 years, although I do use pre ground coffee now, tastes fine, and better than most coffee chains imo, don’t use the frother anymore, I do what Jim does and heat a bit of milk in the microwave.

I have this:

<Broken link removed>

I use at home, and when I get a inverter in the van it’s coming with me......it’s for espresso and lungo, one button each, and if you want more , just keep the button pressed down when it stops and it will keep on going until you let go, and then remember the setting, so a mug full if you prefer. I microwave half a mug of milk, and then press lungo option, with a little extra press for a mug full, as I think the default lungo is 125ml? Or you could have a smaller mug of course.....! ;-)

My one campervan luxury is a Dolce Gusto machine, it does mean being on EHU though. Carte Noire brand petit déjeuner at breakfast and regular shots of espresso intenso through until lunchtime :D2
Other pods than Nescafe's own are now available, at least in France.

Look on eBay, there is a company selling refurbed Tassimo machines. I have bought two and they both look totally unused. They are good machines. We have a smaller one on the camper but they both make great coffe inc cappuccino and they also do Cadbury’s chocolate. The smaller one is the Vivvy ideal for the camper and can be new bought now for £22 but there are loads to choose from

Hi Iandsm - do you happen to know the name of the firm on eBay you're referring to please? Thanks for the tip

Though I'm sure to offend the coffee snobs. Nestle do a very nice instant espresso in sachets. Only seems to be available in France Silvery coloured box of 70. I only drink espresso and americano as I hate the taste and texture of boiled milk.

Nespresso in the motorhome, I like the Gold metallic coloured pods best. I don’t like coffee too strong or harsh. I like Nespresso for the lack of mess in the Motorhome but feel they are a bit expensive at home. I programme the water dose by holding the delivery button down till just at the level I want, it does memorise it.
Delonghi magnifica bean to cup at home with Lavazza coffee beans and milk from Aerocino or microwave, easy to alter strength and simple to maintain. if your making multiple cups for company it’s a bit time consuming to use the steam wand.
Delonghi machines are great ..... daughter has one also. If either broke we would replace. Husband wanted a Sage automated machine ....I was relieved it wouldn’t fit under my wall units it’s bigger and much more expensive. Had a built in Miele one once too but sold the house.
I don’t like the taste of Costa or Starbucks really, we fill our thermos beakers for long journeys. Because we have great coffee at home we rarely go anywhere for a coffee.
