Cliffandger Grand Tour

Those noodles will need a lot of cooking. Very chewy otherwise. :)

Same thoughts here. (y)

Back home, it appears that folks are more interested in hearing about our time in Croatia, than our time in Italy. We loved it.

@cliffandger, when are you heading back home?

Cheers for now,

Jock & Rita. :)
Hi Jock and Rita,

We are back on the 22nd June. We are staying in Istria until next Tuesday, then belting back up through Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Luxembourg and into Belgium in the last week. Well that's the plan, but we all know plans can change...... It was lovely spending time with you both, and looking forward to meeting up at York! (y)

They should be nice and tender - they are outside soaking at the moment! :crying::crying:Hoping the sun will break through the clouds at some stage today - but it ain't looking hopeful at the moment :(

Likewise here Ger & Cliff (y) We avoided Austria because of our weight and the extra rear axle, ie, Go Box charges.

See you both oop Narth. ;)

Jock & Rita. :)

I never thought of beer either, now that is strange. Probably because I had a fair walk back to the campsite and had also spent all my Kuna's with it being my last day in Croatia. Just had enough for one at the campsite. See you at Malvern, p.s. I'm now in Austria after a lightning visit to Slovenia, see you in Salzburg for the footy!

A quick catch up - after the rain started we upped sticks (and noodles) and made our way to Rovinj. Being spiritually minded and Bohemian I wanted to stop on the way and have a look around Bale. Apparently it has very powerful energy.... But most of it was being used up with yet more construction! The main cobbled Street up to the church was closed at both ends by road workers! We walked around the long way and finally got to the church - another baroque church with beautifully painted ceilings. Cliff stayed outside - I think he's had enough baroque to last him a lifetime....
image.jpeg

Is this where they keep the energy.....?

image.jpeg

It was very old though.

Obviously we're not Bohemian or spiritually minded enough as it didn't seem to have much of an effect on us..... So we had an ice cream - a Haribo marshmallow one for me - not very Bohemian I spose..... And left for Rovinj and Camping Vestar.

Rovinj is just stunning. 'The Mediterranean as it once was' is the town's description, and they aren't wrong. Funsters who've visited St Tropez, will agree, like us, that It probably looked like Rovinj before it was discovered by Bridget Bardo!

Will leave you in suspense as we are just off there again for a spot of lunch! Will catch up later!

Well the Internet is a little better this morning so I will check in, before we check out!

I've loved Rovinj, I think best of all the places we've visited on our Grand Tour. It still has the souvenir shops and ice cream parlours (thankfully) but it also has the character and charm of the fishing village of still is.

We bussed in on our first day, and made our way to the church around the outside of the town, passing the public 'swimming pool' on our way...

I was a bit late with this diver......
image.jpeg

But I caught his mate a treat......
image.jpeg

That HAD to hurt!

We reached the Church of Sta Euphemia at the top, and walking straight past the empty pay kiosk, ventured in. Another baroque example, and a very good one it is. We walked behind the red curtain to find the carved stone coffin of St Euphemia. The story goes that she was tortured and thrown to the lions for her Christian faith in AD304. The body disappeared one dark stormy night, only to appear off the coast of Rovinj in a spectral boat. The townspeople were unable to budge the heavy sarcophagus until a small boy appeared with two calves and moved it to the top of the hill, where it stands in the church. (As the baroque painting shows!)
image.jpeg

On closer inspection I saw this.....
image.jpeg

Mario, oh Mario, how could you do it Mario? Wherever he is, I bet he hasn't had a sunny day since he took his penknife out of his pocket.....

And I bet that this was done by one of Mario's descendents......
image.jpeg

We left the church and walked down the steep cobble Street, which having been polished by the knees of generations of sack clothed pilgrims, was quite honestly, a health and safety nightmare!
image.jpeg

Having got back to the harbour in one piece we sat on the Quay and had two large beers for 40k = just over £2 each! As I said St Tropez pre-Bardot!

Have loads more photos, but have to pack up to move now, so will check in later!

Now that looks a lovely place and you look relaxed and tanned Ger! Graffiti is a problem but those seem more imaginative then the crappy tags appearing round town here! Ain't no Banksie that's for sure!
Continue to have safe travels!

Right - all unpacked - 36km up the road in Vrsar, and this is the view from our pitch......
image.jpeg

A lovely spot, and it looks as though the sun is about to show it's face again! This pitch isn't usually an ACSI one, but due to - yes you've guessed it - building work going on, all the site, including beachside pitches are available at ACSI I rates! For once the never ending construction programme has worked in our favour! (y)

Well, back to Rovinj. We cycled in yesterday, loosely following someone's extremely vague directions...... And I can vouch for - as the guide book says - the 7kms of pristine beaches only accessible by cycle or boat! We had a very interesting ride though, passing through a large campsite and two beaches where FKKing was allowed - and there was a lot of it going on......

When we reached the edge of Rovinj we came across a sign..... With a very clear additional visual clue as to what they thought of cyclists who ride when they should have dismounted........
image.jpeg

We decided to get off the bikes and walk .....

Sta Euphemia stands on top of the bell tower (which by the way was modelled on the belfry of St Marks in Venice). She is attached on a ring with ball bearings so that she can always show the direction of the wind to the fishermen who pray to her for a good catch before they leave the port.
image.jpeg

The other nice thing about Rovinj was the very artistic way they decorated their shops with their wares....
image.jpeg

image.jpeg

This one's for Paul @Popeye ....
image.jpeg

image.jpeg

But this one gets a big fat zero for artistic impression......
image.jpeg

As you can tell I loved Rovinj, and could happily have stayed there will into the evening, but we had to cycle back. We decided, rather than take the albeit picturesque 'fruit, meat and two veg' 7km rough terrain cycle path route back, we would be very deredevillish and cycle along the road which was probably only half the distance, and we got on fine - until - less than 1km from Cucaletta, the turning for the campsite...... We spotted a 'short cut'..... And true to form: 'this should take us to that left hander for the campsite - best to get off the road and go down here.....'

I repeat - We were less than a kilometre away from the site ......

30 minutes and I swear at least 3km further on we did indeed come out at the left hander..... I was not appy.... We got back to the site and watched the Wales and England games on the telly in the van - thank goodness for Film On....

OK so we have a beachside pitch, but the 'Groovy Club' has just opened for business and the Birdie Song is in full swing! Oh well, the local Grazevina is dulling the senses nicely........

We have just cycled into Vrsar, on the way stopping at a sculptor's house that our neighbours Paddy and his wife recommended to us.

A lovely southern Irish couple who said they came here to escape the awful weather in Italy - while back home their children are sending them texts saying they are in the middle of a heatwave!

We got to talking as you do and it seems he has visited Santiago de Compostella, but whereas we did it in the MH, he was a true pilgrim and walked the 1000km Camino Way! Having done it once, he was quite prepared to do it all over again with his brother who had just turned 60 and wanted to walk it. Paddy had covered a few kilometres when he felt a stabbing pain in his chest and ended up in hospital having to have a stent fitted! He said he thought he should give it a miss that year....

[The Groovy Club have now moved onto Agadooooo]

I love the whole history of The Camino Way and have documented it in a previous holiday thread, when we went to Santiago from Portugal. To actually talk to someone who has done it as it should be done was lovely. He's also walked a section of it with his wife, who said they had met several 'Busalinos' = 'pilgrims' who stay in hotels every night, and have their baggage transferred from one hotel to the next! The whole point of the journey is to cover the trail, on foot, carrying your belongings with only a cockleshell adorned stick as a walking aid.
image.jpeg

They even sell humped backed ponchos to keep you and your backpack dry! (Library Photo - I have no idea who these two lovely ladies are!)

It is a journey starting from lots of different points in Europe, but we first learned of it when we visited south West France, and Oleron St Marie and St Jean Pied de Port in particular, the main starting point for many.

The 'Way of St James' is walked for many reasons, as many non religious as religious ones, all finishing at the magnificent Cathedral of Santiago de Compostella where there is a Pilgrims Mass held at 12pm every day. The bones of St James the Apostle are interred in a silver lined coffin below the alter, with a stunning bejeweled statue of him above, where pilgrims crawl up the last set of steps on their knees to kiss the cockleshell on the back of his cape to mark the end of their pilgrimage.
image.jpeg

image.jpeg

A brilliant book to read about the walk is 'Travels with my Donkey' by Tim Moored, a British stand up comic who did the walk, much frowned upon because he bought a donkey to carry his gear!

Also the film with Martin Sheen - The Way - is really good.

But I digress - back to our trip into Vrsar...

[The Groovy Club have now progressed to the Okey Cokey].....

We stopped at the Sculptor's garden....
image.jpeg

One of many sculptures made from chain link fencing......

image.jpeg

Again, chain link fencing....

image.jpeg

This was his white marble period....

Zoom in and you'll see that this was to prove - beyond a shadow of a doubt - that he didn't own a telly......

image.jpeg

We cycled on and reached Vrsar, a lovely quiet little harbour that had been taken over by a huge marina.

We walked the length of it, stopping at a restaurant for mussels and chips, and half a litre of Grazevina. The Croatia -v- Russia match had just started, so service was the slowest we've had this holiday - but we forgave them - it was lovely.
image.jpeg

As we walked back to the bikes we heard what sounded like 1000 voices raised in one united cheer from homes, bars and boats all around the beautiful little port - Croatia had scored! I don't know the final score, but I hope they won.

I see no evidence of 'rubbing for luck' on this lovely statue though - compared to every other female statue in Croatia, she is untouched - what a sad sight.......:(

No rubbing front....
image.jpeg

Dux @DuxDeluxe - we know you are a 'rag and stick' merchant at heart, but did you part exchange your MH for a cheeky little 'stinkpot' by any chance.......?
image.jpeg

And yet it has your name on it..... ;)
Yes but it has Popeye's signature "gin palace/floating bordello" style all over it....... The flash git.....;)

Alright, yes it is very nice indeed but things without sticks and rags never really appealed

P.S. No @Popeye s were hurt in the making of this post :D

She's a very confused vessel, flying a union flag in the canton but there are none with Graphics on them save Bermuda but this one seems to have initials. She is flying a Croatian courtesy to Starboard and she has at least one german crew member as she's flying the German Flag to Port.

No Popeyes were hurt you say, well that hurts. As for the disgusting gas guzzling Gin Palace of a clockwork yacht, wash your mouth out Dux, I'm rags 'n sticks through and through.

Love the landscape in one or two of your pictures Ger, quite makes me want to visit, unlike your last vacation which convinced me to never ever consider India again.

Yeah, but apart from all that - can we all just agree it's got Dux's name on it??!!

And on the stern too, the phrase "Duck's A***" springs to mind. :)

Ok......would a nice scotch/Gin help smooth your spinach stained feathers? ;)

Ger, we seem to have missed a few days of your hols, just caught up and it still looks lovely, you both look very well, tanned and healthy. These long trips seem to agree with you...roll on martins retirement lol.

Some lovely photos but think this thread should be renamed "co@&s in Croatia" as you seem to be finding lots of those:whistle:

Very jelbag it's drizzly foggy damp here!!

Sorry Lorraine, but I just couldn't resist it....... Please keep reading, we are heading north tomorrow, so this will be the last sunny pic - honest! :)

Hmmmmm - something tells me we'll be moving off tomorrow........

:eek::eek::eek:

What with that and the REALLY loud site meeting that went on on the other side of us earlier today, and a lot of red lines spray painted into the gravel next to our pitch, I think it's time to move.........
