Camping Gaz 907 cylinders……….. outrageous price!

We always use flogas depot in anderby Linc's. Have never needed an empty cylinder they don't do contracts. Not got any since February though.

Oh dear, well you two carry on chatting away to each other as if I wasn’t here. The procedure is safe if carried out in a suitable environment and with common sense. As for the asinine remark about safety spanner you have no idea what the adjustable spanner is there for.

🤬
I do genuinely fear for the safety of others, having been retired for 20 years, but I still have a moral duty to save life, it's part of my make up..I also feel it necessary when I think it's rightly so to inform others of risk involved.
No matter how qualified or experienced a person might be, I strongly feel that others might be no so, and would be lead into doing the same..
I also cannot believe that during you Balloon Pilot training you were taught to DECANT LPG...filling from a pumped pressure store yes, in a controlled and safe environment.
Perhaps to put a lighter note to your photo, you may have captioned it.
DONT TRY THIS AT HOME..😀👍
What you may see as safe in your experienced hands may not be the case in others...😀🔥🇪🇦

So then team, just to make any of you feel better about the cost of gas for yo mo ho’s, spare a thought for those of us that have to use the stupidly small and ridiculously expensive Camping Gaz cylinders 😱

Now that we have a smaller van and using my previous Gaslow cylinders is not an option (still got the small one for sale btw🙂) I have worked out a way to refill the 907’s myself at home. All it took was the acquisition of an empty 15 Kg Calor Butane cylinder and a pigtail and adaptor to connect to the 907. I have filled up two of my 907’s for a quarter of the price of exchange cylinders👍 Still at least twice the price compared to LPG massive savings compared to Butane form Camping Gaz 😎

In the grand scheme of things, depending on where you buy your gas……

1 Kg of LPG from a filling station …………………………………….. £1.50

1 Kg of Calor Butane from a 15Kg cylinder…………………………. £3.33

1 Kg of Camping Gaz butane from a 907 cylinder ……………….. £13.33

I used to have Gaslow refills on previous van so the LPG price sets the cost comparison.

For the refill procedure I weighed the cylinders accurately before and after so that I did not overfill.

An empty 15Kg Calor cylinder cost me £10 off Gumtree, the pigtail and adaptor cost just under £32 from BES and a refill exchange for a full cylinder cost £50

I’m QUIDS in! 😁😁😁

Jim In all seriousness Jim, is this the sort of post that should be left up? Whilst I don’t doubt the experience and knowledge of the OP, it’s going to be seen by those without such knowledge, and as far as I can see it carry’s no warning as to potential hazards using this method

I'll second that....it needs taking down...solely for the safety of others...

Used to do the same when we had the T5.. 👍

I have no knowledge whatsoever on this subject, but I would leave the thread visible with the warnings so others can see before they attempt to emulate it themselves. (If it is a dodgy practise, I have no idea personally)

I’d suggest having a look at how the manufacturer undertakes the refilling process, along with checking the integrity of the cylinders and all the safety procedures involved, and then make an informed decision in comparison with any (unauthorised) DIY method?

Exactly my point. Knowledge is being gained, and good advice given without any alleged point scoring

Well , yet again how I wish I had not posted. My post was for information and I agree that it may encourage others to ‘have a go’ when perhaps that would not be appropriate.

Next time JockandRita and jumar perhaps you could state your concern in a more suitable and less condescending manner. The pair of you were insinuating that I know nothing and you know everything. You lacked the common decency to address your thoughts to me personally or to start a discussion on the merits and risks involved. Your remarks to each other (about me) were snide and derogatory.

I am not prepared to enter into any further discussion on the subject and yes I will take the advice from others on another thread and use the ignore button🙂

Jim please feel free to delete this thread, it can serve no useful purpose and will only lead to further conflict.

Could your perception of danger have been skewed because of your career? Firefighter?

I used to think commercial fridges were unreliable because everyday I had to deal with lots of broken down ones.

Police hate people speeding because they see lots of accidents, but they are rare in reality.

No not at all....part of my job was to prevent Fire, to follow the laws and Acts that were put into place to prevent Fire, destruction and most of all danger to the general public...we were trained to identify dangerous situations, one of my own personal qualifications was to conduct inspections of petroleum and gas installations...of course the other part of my job was to fight fires which were generally caused by human behaviour...as are most tragic situations...

Just a question I don’t know the answer to but can you tell me if there is a law or act relating to filling butane/propane cylinders yourself? It was my belief that none exist, not that I would do it myself though but I do know a few who have done so for years as did some campsites.

I don't know of any law preventing a DIY filling, it is not something the health and safety would recommend and may be against some safety regulation but then so is climbing a ladder without a hard hat. If done correctly it is safe but the correct equipment and procedures must be used. I would definitely not recommended anyone do it and I have never done it myself, however Chockswahay has demonstrated competence in the process and will be saving a lot of cash so I don't see a problem

No one has mentioned that in the bottom of a gas bottle is a layer of black tar like substance. This is fine whilst the bottle is the right way up but when inverted the tar goes out with the gas.

How do I know this, I purchased a LPG converted Peugeot 406 Estate 2.0 ltr petrol from an auction years ago, it was mint condition tbh and I was chuffed to bits, it would run fine until you pulled up to a stop then cut out occasionally.

I ended up at a fuel injection specialist in Doncaster who recognised the car straight away as he’d been sent it from a Peugeot main dealer local to him to fix. He told me the entire engine fuel system had a coating of tar which was impossible to clear so the main agent sold it at auction.

I tracked down the owner in Meltham near Huddesfield and went to see him, guess what

When I pulled up at the end of his drive he was filling his brand new Vauxhall Astra with an upturned calor cylinder hoisted from his garage roof 😱😱

His son owned a calor gas outlet 😢

The car was sold back at a different auction and I was very lucky and it made £60 more than i paid for it 😉

Lesson learnt

Having read the initial post yesterday and being a typically money saving Scot I thought it was a brilliant idea on a way of saving money to refill the bottles.
However, Only after it’s been pointed out on the thread can I see how dangerous it might be for someone like me to have a go should the need ever arise so I’m actually glad others did speak up on the safety issue.
To me this is a forum where things can be discussed, we might not all agree all of the time and that’s fine but we all have our right to an opinion, but to try and silence others is just wrong so for the few that have helped educate me here. Thankyou!

I received a notification that I was mentioned in a post by the OP yesterday, which was timed at 4.35pm (16.35hrs).

No such post exists anymore. Hmmm, I wonder why?

Jock.

Cos your blocked ! Welcome to my world where you dare speak out. 😂

A bit pointless to tag you though if you can’t see it.

I’ve read the thread through and I don’t see anything to take offence at JockandRita so if you have been blocked, I think that’s a little bit petty in my opinion, given that you’ve been mentioned.

Thanks Gav. I have checked and double checked but found nothing, so it looks like I'm off his Christmas card list. ;)

Nothing for me to see Jim, but thanks anyway. It just confirms my reply to Gav above.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

You were never going to be a good Firefighter if you weren't Thick Skinned...🥴🔥
I've been blocked too...🤭🔥🇪🇦

He probably won't see your quote but as he was mentioned, here it is:

Thanks for the morning chuckle. 😂. Xmas cards are a waste of money anyway, and nothing but junk around the house so I’m happy to be off some Xmas lists.

Yes, I have just this morning been made aware of it, but thanks anyway Richard.

Chockswahay. If you can see my post, I am as keen as the next person to save a few bob, especially in these trying financial times, with worse to come apparently, but to be fair, where you might have thought you were doing others a favour by demonstrating your efforts to cut energy costs, in actual fact, you did no one any favours, least of all yourself, be openly setting yourself up on the great big WWW.

If I was a passenger in your Hot Air Balloon, and you told me not to do something because it was dangerous, I would heed your advice for the very reason that "I might not know any better", whereas you as the pilot would.

Decanting flammable gases or liquids, without the proper training, equipment, and PPC, is a No No, and I am sure it will be legislated against somewhere. I just don't know exactly where though. So, to encourage others to maybe do the same, just to save a few bob, is somewhat irresponsible in my opinion. YouTube is full of videos from folks, giving similar dangerous advice. :(

Regards,

Jock.
