Campervans! - Has the bubble burst?

Let's not forget that a lot of these campervans are dual purpose, doing the job of a holiday home and daily driver so then the 60k sounds better when split between the two.....beyond my budget but doable for a lot

The VW Camper vans are relatively quite tiny and appeal to a much younger market who perhaps do not currently have the funds. So perhaps you are right and their bubble has burst. I don't see that with the larger PVC/Motorhome market which from what I have seen is very bouyant.
Have you seen the cost of a VW Camper you certainly need funds for a new one, when we sold our VWT5 the dealers wher quite sniffy about them today they would fall over themselves to buy one. I think they have become a stopgap for those dealers who can’t get Motorhomes via the normal manufactures

Have a look at Lowdahms and I think you will find vw/ford are not cheap. &60k plus

Well one thing is for certain, we have just had 3 weeks in Cornwall and if you threw a stick in any direction with your eyes shut you would hit a VW Camper, from Brand spanking new to some very old but in as new condition spilt screen models.
Not for us but they have a far bigger following than any other make.
When we wanted to trade up in 2017, Highbridge refused outright to PX our T4 VW California auto. Even though Westfalia is owned by Rapido, one of Highbridge's franchises. Sold that Westy privately for not much less than we paid for it 10 years previously in Germany.

How things have changed ... as you say, VW campers everywhere.

I popped into Premium Motorhomes Doncaster on my way home as i am looking to change my van and I am looking at a Morelo (NEW) and spoke with some one told me the guy i needed to talk to was not about so took all my details and said he would give me a call back that was 10 days ago obviously did not think i was a genuine and just a tyre Kicker or maybe it was the T-shirt and shorts.

I’ve been twice to look at “normal” vans, they never rung me back either🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

There are always a load on the Lower Leas in Folkestone, older VW models enjoying the free parking. Don't know what they do for loos etc as the public ones are way off.

Hope they are quicker at sending some spares I have ordered😁

This used motorhome dealer thinks the VW van market has peaked. He had quite a few for sale. He also didn't think the used market for some motorhomes had dropped though.

I live in New Zealand, although originally from Doncaster..... I bought a used 2 year old Burstner for the same price the couple had bought it for. That looks crazy but a new one is around $70,000 more than my 2 year old one! You wouldn't get it until mid 2023 and they can't guarantee that either. I think we are going to be forced to live with higher prices for some time to come.

My local caravan sales has about a dozen VW camper vans on its forecourt with no sign of any of them being sold!Has the bubble burst? This time last year they appeared to be selling like hot cakes.
They've test driven them rather than watching a video on YouTube and buying the first one they see because cute.

And I've no idea why anyone wants an old one, I drove a bay window VW in the 70s , it was awful then ,slow, cold , ½mm of tin between you and whatever hits you.

On Monday we were at Go European, they are Carthago dealers, they don't have any new vans for sale, even in their showroom they had a Hymer.
They are selling second hand vans very quickly, they simply can't get enough stock..

Want a new Carthsgo?none will be delivered this year a long wait. .

Mine should be worth a few Bob extra towards a Concorde/knaus 900/coachman/Hymer/pvc and owt else I fancy, maybe a good time to sell/trade the Carthago 🤷‍♂️🤣🤣🤣🤣

We chose to return to a campervan from a small coachbuilt for a few reasons.
Namely the feeling of ‘camping’ as opposed to being confined in a white box I got with our previous Majestic, the ability to get it into a car park space more easily, travel down country roads etc, not having to worry about damp (we found damp in our 7 year old Majestic). Yes there are compromises, mainly storage, but there are ways around this, and we were carrying a lot of junk with us previously. I’m no spring chicken and won’t see 70 again but it makes me feel young and adventurous 😂

I know it was expensive but so was our first van, Autosleeper Topaz (VW) and we got a great deal when we traded that in, almost as much as we paid for it second hand, and as my mother always said ‘no pockets in shrouds’.
............and not forgetting around 40 mpg !!!

Agree. We can never get our heads around the cost of the VW campers, when you see how little space there is inside of them. Plus, we usually stay on CL sites, so have all the facilities we need. We live beside an ‘A’ road, and there are always plenty of Motorhomes out there.

A certain dealer we were at yesterday have lot's and lot's of VW campers for sale from 5 year old to new.
AND, appear to have lot's of propper MH stock.

Visited Chelston Motorhomes yesterday for a hab service. We noticed their stock of motorhomes for sale was still very low. However there were 3 second hand VW Campers for sale. I am guessing that all 3 were taken in as px. Perhaps the sudden increase in the VW Campers available reflects that in the rush to get away people bought too small and are now trading in for bigger motorhomes.

And the rattly air-cooled engines always sounded clapped out.

We were driving on the motorway round Brummie 3 weeks ago, was overtaken by a blue VW van with his filler flap open and the actual cap dangling, we managed to get ahead of him and drew his attention to it. Yesterday on the A38 in Devon we overtook a blue VW van with the filler flap open, couldn't see the actual cap, didn't see him again so don't know if it was the same numpty or maybe a characteristic of these vans. Didn't clock the reg number but was a new looking van so maybe inexperienced owners

I use my VW campervan as the run around as well so it gets all year round use and saves on buying an extra vehicle. I am always amazed how many 4 wheel drive cars I see who could replace them with something that is so more versatile, and I suppose for that reason more eco friendly.

They are expensive things siting there when your electric bill alone is £100 a month and your wages haven’t risen with inflation for over 10 years. Incidentally, I checked last last week and a Paramedic earns £100 a month more now than they did 10 years ago. A teacher friend of mine is the same, but 12 years ago.
Hiya, I'm a paramedic. In 2012/13 pay rates were £21,176 - £27,625 depending on experience. 2022 rates are £25,655 - £39,027. Even allowing for inflation using bank of England calculator this is about £1000 increase for newly qualified paramedics and £7000 for expienced. It's not as bad as people make out. Don't know about teachers though. 😁

Go and have a look at the cost of the base vehicle I paid £32k for a new but discounted transporter in 2020 ( it’s a T6 and the T6.1 was just being launched hence the discount) today examples of mine are selling for £46k the market has gone bonkers for 2nd hand vehicles and transporters are no exception.

There's a big difference between a vw transporter conversion and a vw ocean or beach, the latter has at least a 12 month waiting list
As somebody pointed out owners use them as daily drivers

The type of youngster who bought a VW on a whim because they wanted to at least get away, are the festival goers who dump their tents and walk away. Now they can go back to Benidorm and Ibiza the van is no use to them so flog it
Is that 3 caricatures in one post? Top posting.

10 years ago at the top of band 6 I was taking home £2500, today it’s £2600. That’s the real comparison regardless of what the internet says. It will include the higher pension contributions and PAYE requirements which have gone up and soon eat up any increase.

You are also quoting the wrong AFC figures so I can’t make a comparison.

When I bought my T5 the dealer (not a VW or small van specialist by any stretch of the imagination) they took my micro-camper in PX, and said that if I needed to sell the T5 to let them know as they'd be interested in buying it back. Their stated reasoning was that most of their stock was larger motorhomes, and they liked to have some good quality smaller vans in because they often are the vans which get people into campers/motorhomes to start with, and a percentage of those buyers then later trade up to larger vans.

Mind you, I think that if my van had been on their southern forecourt, local to me, to start with it would've been up for at least £5k more as so many people were buzzing about it that they had to shut it up and hide it 'round the back' in a sea of white motorhomes. But it was from their Sheffield branch...
