Cambelt & Water Pump change quote from local Fiat garage today.

Whilst I sort of agree I think you are wrong. Parts will be made either in the company itself or by a 3rd party but to a standard set by the company, bit like making baked beans for the different supermarkets, essentially the same ingredients but to a different recipe.

That by itself does not mean the standard set by Fiat, Ford et al is better than a pattern part but it upholds warranty etc.

For cars not built anymore i think they have to support by having parts available for a set amount of time and what happens now is like VW they give the presses to the likes of Seat to make a similar model themselves once they move up a model.
Well I did work for a large Japanese motor manufacturer for eight years, so I have 'exposure' to such things. Yes, you are correct in stating that the parts will be manufactured to tolerances and materials stipulated by the manufacturers drawings, otherwise these cause failures, recalls and worse.

Invariably, the 3rd party manufacturers for after-market parts are part owned by the parent company, but now we're getting into 'tax efficiencies' and accounting. One manufacturer never used to 'make a profit', otherwise they'd pay large amounts of Corporation Tax, however they did pay quite high prices for their parts and equipment, if you get my drift. Many of those supplier companies were infact owned by the parent company 'overseas'. MBH we called it.. or Money Back Home.

But... we digress.

Car manufacturers dont make their own serviceable items the same way marks and Spencer don't make their own biscuits . They come from an independent supplier with their brand label on them.

It might have fiat stamped on it but you can be certain it wasn't made by fiat.

And Kellogg's DO make cereal for others 😉

Although pre covid, our local garage, on our 2013 ducato automatic
fitted new uprated front springs and shockers (which I supplied);
did a full service including auto box oil change;
Brake fluid change;
Cambelt supply and fit:
as well as unseizing both rear brakes.
Total cost £982.39

They put a note on the invoice that they used a 'pattern' oil filter which they charged £11.36 because a Fiat one was £210.14.
It definitely pays to support your local garage,

Had mine done for under £400 cam belt, water pump and tensioner. They gave me the old parts that were taken out which had no signs of ware. It was done on an age basis not mileage

Not sure where they got the £210 -14p figure from for a genuine Fiat oil filter . I had my 2017 Ducato automatic serviced at Guest Truck and Van in Peterborough ,they are my local Fiat professional garage and the oil filter part number F0000071779555 was charged at £15-06 plus VAT. All three filters air / oil and fuel didn't come to £210-14p. I think £210-14 must have been a typing error.

A friend of mine marks his timing belt with UV pen takes it to a mane dealer gets call two days later to collect.
gets it home takes cover of cambelt yip the mark's wer on the belt
this was a few year's ago thay no longer exists

If the belts are made to a manufacturer spec why don't Rolls Royce belts last any longer than Dacia belts 🤔

I have used gates kits for years with no issues

If there is no difference between cam belt specification and quality then why was the preferred kit a gates kit over all others for many years.
Gates was always recommended over other makes.

It's probably because we don't know any other named belts and have simply become confident in a name more than the ordinary Fiat one.
I remember specifically ordering a LuK clutch plate because they had gained a good reputation. What was in the box was the standard Valeo Fiat spec plate and was perfectly fine.
