Burgohondo and Beyond

Martin is good at supervising, isn't he.
Missing the warmth and sun of Spain
I regard Supervising as one of my main Talents....Bluffing is another....Bluffing in Spanish something I need to work on..I also have "A" level in Blagging but not Los Blaggos which is the Spanish version.

After a verrrrry cold night, but snug as a bug in our van, this morning we had a stroll around Ampudia. The castle is the main feature with the church coming second. We were also interested in the houses with their arcades.

The castle from near the camperstop

We then walked down through the old quarter

With its houses with their arcades. Some of the supports were wooden and some made of stone.

We arrived at the church with the tower we could see from the parking area.

But the stonemasons could leave their mark.

We had a stroll around the castle. It's privately owned and was closed yesterday.

Next to the castle is a chapel. There are small, differently shaped structures around it. Maybe mausoleums?

There are also small buildings, some caves with circular table like/mills? outside.

We don't know what they were for. All of them are around the castle and chapel area.

We had a cycle ride round the wind farms then, as we were back for lunch, we decided to travel on to another parking area found on Camper Contact at a village called Becerril de Campos. Just why they have made this area were not sure but it was a very quiet overnight stop. It's situated next to a canal which as a GR (long distance) route along it. Quite how far this route goes we didn't get chance to research as we decided to go north to the mountains while the weather there was good.

The motorhome parking at Becerril de Campos.

This village seems to have more than its fair share of churches, most of them in a bad state of repair. One of them derelict! We saw four!!! of them, I think that was all of them!

Village square, near Church number two!

We decided to head to the mountains whilst the weather was with us. We'd found two Motorhome parking areas we quite fancied. One was at the small village of Maraña. We shopped at Guarda and then had a spectacular drive with snowy mountain views. Unfortunately, when we arrived at Moraña the parking area was closed even though the opening times were from April 1st (Fools!!!).

We headed back down towards Riaño and saw a walking route advertised at the village of Lano. There was excellent parking next to the Visitor Centre (could stay overnight if we wanted) and a marked 6.8km walking route.

We set off wearing duvet jackets due to the cold wind but soon derobed! The walk climbed and then descended (as they do) with spectacular scenery. We passed a rebuilt shepherds and had a look inside.

After our walk we continued on ever spectacular scenic roads into the southern part of the Picos de Europa to a Camperstop at Posada de Valdeon. This is a pay parking. €8 a night with electricity. Use of toilets and (cold) shower, no thanks, in the neighbouring sports centre.

The notice board said to pay at the Town Hall but a lady arrived to collect our money. She lived in Manchester!!! 23 years ago she said.

There are two vans here, us and a couple from Cornwall on their first Motorhome trip in Spain.

Tomorrow we're going walking!

IMG_1836.JPG

Our spot for two nights.

Now we know that cows don't sleep at night. There are a dozen or so of them in the very large field all around the camperstop but they think the grass is greener our side of the fence and they know how to lift up the rails and enter.

At 2am we heard the rails rattling which was a good thing because a few minutes later our van shook as though there had been an earthquake.

Martin braved the outside world and the ringleader (we think) was munching the grass around our motorhome by squeezing itself between us and the fence. It was chased away and luckily they stayed away from the van.

This morning someone arrived and put them back in the field but just put the rails back as before. Martin had a scout around and found some twine and the rail is now tied in place. Don't know if they've attempted the great escape or not but they are their side of the fence.

They do sleep in the morning. The dark one is the ringleader!

Set off for an easy stroll today as we've not had a day off since before the orienteering at the weekend... but the weather was so good, the views wonderful and we'd already climbed uphill, sooo we carried on. We were following the yellow and white painted route markers for a route we didn't know where it started or ended but we knew we were officially allowed to be there. We had a map on Martin's phone so knew we could strike off downhill at some point to head back.

We're back now, so all was well, we drank our health to Cornish Martin with his bottle of Goliath he gave us yesterday, we've had spag bol with a glass of red and we're chilling!!!

Tomorrow may head towards Aguilar de Campoo.

Hope you get here sometime. We've been to the Picos before but from Potes or from the north. This place, because of the camperstop, makes it very accessible. You can go to Cain from here and do the popular Cares gorge (not by motorhome tho, I don't think as the road is quite small, although in season there are buses).

Hope to see you soon, there's a slight chance in June as we head through Holland to get to Poland.

Have a good summer. What are your plans? Something around cycling? :D

Cycling it is! :cycle: Starting this Sunday with a marathon race in Groesbeek, Holland. For Wilfried of course, I'm just a supporter. Some other races in Germany will follow in April, May and one in June, Then beginning of July we're off to the Dolomites, Italy for race one and than the big event the 15e of July in Bad Goisern, Austria. More than 200 km of mtb racing, starting five in the morning. Afther that he will sell his bike he says. Do you believe that?? :roflmto:

I'm glad to see that someone has got good taste in their choice of ale. ;)

It's good to read that you are enjoying yourselves. (y)

Stay safe,

Jock. :)
Twas a gift from our nextdoor motorhome guy, it was a new one for me Jock to be honest...however a very nice one indeed.
Will check it out next time we are in the UK.

Judith...nice thread. The area was on the list and this has confirmed it.

Mart. Are you back to full health & fitness?

Terry

Hey, good to hear from you. When are you venturing over here again?

I'd say Martin is 90 percent back to fitness. Just got to try climbing again yet.
