Bull bars.... Why?

Always liked the look of bull bars..
I reckon firms are missing a trick too
Make them out of soft(ish) plastic...Get the look with no weight, help protect the front end, AND be pedestrian safe ( actually night even be safer for pedestrians ! )
How can something sticking out of a vehicle, no may how soft, be helpful to pedestrians?

I never had bull bars on my Land Rovers but, I did have an ARB winch bumper with a Warn 9.5Ti winch although the winch bumper came with a removable bull bar.
I could hardly lift the bloody think to remove it & in my opinion the car looked better without such nonsense.
It was a seriously heavy bit of kit & being Australian it was obviously designed to deal with Kangaroo's but, there are precious few of those in Scotland!!!
I did whack a large red stag with the my Discovery, was eating venison for weeks!!
I did chose the winch bumper carefully to get as large a flat area as possible to avoid injury in the event of a collision with a pedestrian, the flatter area spreading the surface area over a larger body area, it isn't even nice to think of such an incident.

The Scottish Ambulance Service bought half a dozen Land Rover Discovery's in the very early 90s & they all had bull bars, these were eventually removed after a child was killed on a pedestrian crossing by a Discovery equipped with these bars.

A short wheelbased Vauxhall Frontera Sport I had, had bull bars made out of a rubbery material over a steel tube skeleton.
The photo is of the aftermath of hitting the diesel that the artic we followed off the A1 at Newark spilt when he forgot to put the filler cap back on when he re-fueled.

Enlighten us please, where have you been to see all these motorhomes with bull bars fitted, were
they driving, parked or at a bull bar owners club meet?. I've possibly seen only a couple in nearly
10 years of motorhoming. Autotrail fitted them a few years ago but it was only a short production
run.
I saw 2 at Southlands CMC site, 2 at a small site called Bryn Ffanigl Ganol (near Colwyn Bay) and 2 at Hendre Mynach at Barmouth. For clarification - they were all different vans.....)(y)

It’s an epidemic....

I remember back in the 90s a couple ranting at me in a supermarket carpark about the bull bars on my old nissan patrol. it was the old square shaped patrol so if it hit a pedestrian with or without it, they would be seriously injured

I think the polite term for it is "pimping your ride"

With the amount of Tw*ts that try to hit my rear and front in supermarket car parks (my moho is used everyday almost, not just a couple of weeks a year like a lot that just sits on the driveway) I would fit a set in a heartbeat. in fact I would fit them all round, sides and all!

You don’t want a Moho, you want a tank...l:)

I thought when the law changed they had to be non harming...... IE. Plastic.... So they would break away on contact and solely for bling effect.

All the ones I saw where shiny and solid....

Never seen point: in addition to which, they would put my 5.99M Ducato into a higher charging band on ferries, bridges and some toll roads. So a no-braIner.

Wouldn’t help the payload either?

Bull bars are for strange folk stuck in a 70’s time warp. They probably wear shell suits.

Its only something to try to improve the look of your van.. just like adding lights, chrome door handles or chrome mirror covers, or whatever floats your boat. I had a chrome one fitted on my old style ducato and it improved the boring plain white greatly but I don't think the modern style vans need it, as for safety it probably improves the impact area as it is a very smooth large and round area. if you want it have it

Maybe it’s so as the t**** in car parks don’t dent their vans ?

At the Startford rally today there are two MoHos fitted with bull bars out of about 40 vans

So vehicle doesn't get damaged when you knock down pedestrians and cyclists :)

Completely unnecessary in the UK or any urban environment.
Hadn't thought of that but not sure they aren't necessary in the UK though

We have managed in 15 years in France to clobber a deer and a wild boar (no ... not me ... a real one) with our Citroen ZX, modest damage each time, would not normally consider bull bars ... but ... these days in France .... maybe .... just maybe ... to push the bloody Gillet Jaunes out of the way, maybe a very good idea.
Might be better towards Macron

I did find my bull bars came in handy once when I managed to hit what must have been the only tree in the middle of the desert. But can't see any real use for them on a Motorhome. I don't think they even enhance the appearance of the MH. And Bull Bars are only any good if you have a solid base to fit them onto.
