Breakdown cover for 3.5t plus mhs

We were abroad when there was a discussion on here about some confusion about the cover provided by N/Wide re vehicles over 3.5tonnes.

Was that matter resolved?

I ask because I seem to remember that some exec. from NW was supposed to be
writing to policyholders, but, having got home I do not see a letter from him/them.
Yes the policy allows for vehicles over 3.5t.

Yes, my letter arrived some weeks ago, confirming that nothing had change except the AA operating company.

We had cover with Green Flag through our Direct Line insurance however the time we needed to be recovered Green Flag told us they don’t recover vehicles over 7m ours is 8m. I told them to take it up with Direct Line I’ve paid for recovery they know what vehicle I have and I need recovering. After a while they phoned back and said Direct Line have authorised the recovery. When we got home I cancelled the recovery with Direct Line and took out Premier plus with R.A.C through CAMC they don’t have a length or weight restriction. When we are able to travel to Europe with out fear of Covid flaring up we’ll add Euro cover.
That is strange....Green Flag/Mayday web sight specifically state any vehicle... no age or weight or size restrictions
I realize your cover was thru direct line but you say it was Green Flag themselves that refused to take you..
Puzzling...

Not according to their definitions within the policy documents : extract below:
• it’s either a car, light van, motorhome or motorbike;
• it’s privately registered in the UK;
• there aren’t more people in it than the manufacturer would recommend, or more than nine altogether including the driver;
• it can’t weigh more than 3.5 metric tons (3,500 kg) in total, including any load being carried;
• it can’t be more than 7 metres long (apart from a tow bar or coupling device), 3 metres tall, and 2.55 metres wide;

The C&MC don't provide cover for the EU through Mayday, but they do through their Red Pennant scheme.
Yes I know but at the time of being offered EU breakdown cover through our insurer it was far more cost effective, than Red Pennant who's rates were not at all competitive.

Red Pennant who's rates
Hi.
They are expensive,but the Rolls Royce of cover. We had ours through " Comfort " with our m/ho insurance when we were in the UK. Over here in Porty land..NO TOWING..So it is already in the Insurance Mix we pay here...So i have been told.

Maybe then Green Flag with Mayday have a special arrangement.... Mayday specifically state no weight or size restrictions.

Mayday, great service and they respond with the correct vehicle.
We had a double tyre failure in motorway roadworks, told them we were 8.5 mtr 4.5 tonne tag axle, turned up within 15 mins with a 40 foot low loader, dragged us on it and away, no issues at all,
Joe

Hi there. We have Britannia to cover our vehicles. We have a multi car pack for three drivers. It covers our 4.25t Motorhome as well as each driver in whatever they are in. we have had call outs in Europe. All without any fuss just remember to give accurate information when you take the policy out so they know what they are coming to.

We had AA through Safecover pre Brexit for our 3.85 ton, 6.9m van. They recovered us off the motorway until they could find a garage to do the repair, then a 2hr+ recovery to a garage that could take us. Took a few days which at the time we had and could change our plans and delay our Eurotunnel return. Each place let us sleep in our van overnight.

I had the RAC Arrival cover which is very comprehensive but has become expensive.

An interesting aspect to this thread for those with vans on a Mercedes chassis is their “MobiloVan” service. Following is a quote from the website.

”When you buy a new van from Mercedes-Benz, or you service your van at an Authorised Mercedes-Benz Vans Dealer, you’ll get so much more.

You’ll get free 24/7 breakdown cover & roadside assistance^ for 3 years on all new vans and then the automatic renewal for 12 more months once it’s outside its 3-year manufacturer warranty – up to 30 years.

This means complete peace of mind when your van is out on the road, and it saves you on the time and cost of sourcing breakdown cover”.

This covers both (UK) and EU. Worth having your Mercedes van serviced at a Mercedes dealership to obtain this.

Nationwide flex plus account gives you breakdown cover you not the vehicle. Holiday insurance and mobile phone cover plus other benefits check it out.
I have just used the Nationwide Flex account breakdown service for my 3.5 ton MH and it was excellent. UK and not over 3.5 ton though. However I am confident that European cover will be good, but don't really want to find out.

RAC only cover up to 6.3 mtr vans on their standard personal cover - if you have a motorhome longer than that,ours is 6.7mtrs you have to pay extra which includes membership of the Camping & Caravaning Club.

Nationwide flexplus. Never had to use it though.

Mine is also through the insurance company . I'm just over 3.5 ton , plated to 3.7 , though actual it's around 3.6 and a half , due to axle loading . Cost me 90 quid , a year , and is part of the insurance premium . I figure they will send a vehicle that is capable of actual recovery , as they insure it . Being a trucker , i didn't like the answers some were giving during the initial search .

Just renewed my insurance , gone down , recovery as usual remained the same , it's never changed .

Oh , and the by the way , i'm insured with Trinity , through the people you guy's love to hate , Adrian Flux . Fully comp , with screen cover 250 .

Postscript ; motorcycle is also in the process of being renewed . Bikesure , also through AF , and that's also gone down . Just over a ton , under half what it was three year ago .

Green Flag on 7.4m Autotrail Cheyenne.
Full European cover and repatriation plus loads of other bits. No mention of any weight or legnth restriction. As the Registration Number is registered they will know it is over 7m so puzzled why they told you no recovery over 7m.

What companies that are good do you use for breakdown cover to include overseas breakdown and recovery.
LV we’re in Spain at the moment our engine battery gave up the ghost my fault should have changed it long ago. Phoned England then got a call from here in Spain all sorted in about 2hours new battery fitted can’t thank LV enough brilliant

We opened a Nationwide Flexplus account specifically for this cover (plus AA cover for the rest of our vehicles). At £13 a month we’re saving money.
And it includes world wide travel insurance and mobile phone insurance.

CAMC RedPennant every time. As a member for 45 years they are simple toast up and pay. May not be cheapest but they have the rescue built in. Never had use them seriously but on one occasion had to seek advice - smashed front window on a caravan.

RAC Arrivals thru CCC previous 12mtr 11 ton US RV, UK and Europe , and current 7,5 ton overlander the same .

Hi all and thanks for all the info. I could not add to my existing insurance policy, and was not worth looking for insurance and breakdown at the same time as there is to long before my insurance becomes due. So have opted for driver guardian £183 for cover including europe. As I have 3 vehicles decided to pay for all of them £283 in total. AA was £220 without europe and was there gold not top level option. It may not be the cheapest, but I know I am covered for all breakdown scenarios ( hopefully) and includes pet repatriation.

Have mine through insurance, Caravan Guard. It's an AXA policy. Just checked small print and no mention of size/weight limit.

Our Eurobreakdown cover cost us £81 for the UK & EU, we're 3850kg:
