Bonkers Defender Price!

I had always wanted a Defender, finally got around to buying this one back in 2008. Used it quite a bit when I first got it, a bit of gentle off roading and green laneing. Unfortunately due to work commitments I haven't really had the time to enjoy it that much over the last few years. Still keep it MOT'd, insured and taxed. in fact these photos where taken immediately after passing its MOT in Dec 2019. it had done 28miles since the last test in Dec 2018. and only 49 miles the year before. Sits in the garage most of the time, occasionally take it for a run around the village. Had lots of offers to sell but kind bring myself to sell it.

That’s a fine looking vehicle. ?

Mines a 2013 Puma and they are now fetching slightly more than I paid for it, which is nice.
For value, thats what I should have bought in 2013 when I bought my new Disco4. £45k after discount. How much was your Defender then Jim?
I love it though. Best vehicle I’ve ever owned and intend to keep it till I drop.

I would say that its not actually for sale then.

I don’t have a defender but I have got this . 1969 Series 2 a

Are you the only one Jim that calls it a Lanny? I've never heard that before.

12 years in the army and they were lannys, never, ever heard them referred to as landys and would have laughed if we did.

Go to Landyzone.co.uk and search the term Landy and you return 113 pages, many of those I'm sure referring to the forum itself. Search the term Lanny and you have 116 pages and they are talking about Lannys not a forum called landy. See this thread, as an example of what I mean. someone joins with the thread title Another New Lanny Lover, and someone says welcome to landyzone

Intrigued though.. Did civis call them Landys, while military called them Lannys, I've no idea. Did different parts of the military call them different names? I just went to the military forums Arrse and entered Landy and Lanny and both maxed out at 200 results so I don't know. I do know, to my ear at least, Landy just sounds so wrong :D

Odd.
My Dad was ex Military (1946-1976)
He always referred to my Landrovers as 'Landies'

He drover the Pink Panther Lan'd'ie that is now in the Imperial War Museum back from Oman to Dover in 1976 (where it was impounded as Government property)

I had a Toyota Tacoma in the USA, (my granddaughter still drives it to school!, Grandson used it untill he went to college) It`s the Hilux? Over Here. 3.4 V6 Auto. We "toaded" it in the USA. Put her into Neutral on the transfer box and go. Briefly had access to a LR(2?) Lightweight during the 80`s, belonged to a Farmer "Customer". Interesting Drive!, to say the least. Owned an S2 in the 90`s which stood near 2 years, wanting (really) a new chassis. Let it go for peanuts to a guy in our village who now "off-roads" It.

The soothsayers of Land Rovers are usually people who've never owned one.
However, they are an acquired taste & they are simply awesome off road, unlike a lot of the fake 4x4s which cannot run in 4x4 full time without tearing themselves to bits.

Similar to ivorantony, my first 300tdi Discovery sat in my garden for a year with only a few minor faults, my mate who had cancer (& subsequently died) was desperate for a vehicle asked to buy it, so it was given to him for mates rates, it went out of my drive, straight to MOT station & passed first time.

My first Discovery was the 7th 300tdi built & a press launch pre production car, then my last one was the 7th from last 300tdi which we reimported from Japan, I turned her into a serious overland expedition machine.

I've been around Land Rovers my whole life & they hold a special place in my heart.

Boys day out.

We had a Disco 4 at work, reliability was dreadful! We had two and both needed new engines by year 3. The dealer took ages to fix them and they constantly needed fixing.

That said, off road they were amazing things!

I was taught to drive off road with no electronic aids, they made it childs play with all the gizmos on!

Have to say though, I was also impressed with the Merc 4x4 Ambulances we bought.

Best off roader I saw in action on a highland hillside was a Mk1 (3 door) Range Rover.

Another good little off roader I had was an MOT failure Suzuki Vitara, we stripped everything off it and put a gerry can inside for petrol, it only had drivers seat, no lights or anything else not needed.

I'm looking to buy one of those this year.
Make sure it hasnt still got a discovery transfer box , or has had the ratio changed , a discovery is too high geared if fitted with bigger than 205's

I was always a civvy but, always called them Lanny's however, my dad had been military & passed his test in one.

Most everyone I know calls them Landy's.

Tomato/tomato.

Nice.

Is there a psychological link between Land Rover owners/enthusiasts and Motorhomers ? Seems like a fair few on here are into both .

Both encourage prople who like to “fettle, and fiddle” with things. It certainly isn’t their similar off road ability.

Another great advantage of driving a Defender every day is that I can disagree with all the comments I read on here that complain about their MoHo being slow, noisy, and using a lot of fuel. My MoHo appears fast, quiet, uses less fuel, and is an easy drive.

Yeah, already in 2015 when I looked at off-roaders, the Defender was in its last year of production and they had jacked-up the price so much it was ridiculous. Ended up with a Ford Ranger.
I bet if you had bought the defender it would be way cheaper in terms of depreciation.

Slightly off topic but regarding military slang...

My dad was a royal marine... . In our house they've always been called an egg banjo..... . I've never met anyone else who uses this phrase. Anyone?

An egg sandwich.

My dad would always cook himself one when he was pizzed. We could never work out how he didn’t get it down his top when pizzed, but did when sober.

I hope the guys making the new real replacement one (not the JLR hairdressers version) make it big.

I hope they just stop making it. They are fantastic things, but the time has passed. Modern people can’t deal with them.
