Best UK sites within easy walking distance of a City / Town / Large Village?

Thanks again for all the suggestions, I'm just settling back in after our Oxford trip then I'll knock them up into some sort of spreadsheet and stick them up in the Resources somewhere 👍

(Less the Bus, over a mile walk or non-EHU ones 😉)

Just to add a few Scottish "urban" sites -
C&MC Melrose Gibson Park (Co-op at entrance, town centre 5 minutes walk, best ever Thai takeaway, 4-5 dog friendly pubs \ restaurants, etc)
C&MC Stonehaven (10-15 minutes walk along a seaside boardwalk to town centre)
C&CC Dingwall
Woodlands Caravan Park, Carnoustie (10 minutes walk downhill to Open golf course but twice that on the way back!)
C&MC Ayr Craigie Gardens (excellent 10-15 minute walk along riverside to town beach \ centre)
C&MC Maragowan (fishing on Club water adjacent to site and 10-15 minutes walk to the Falls of Dochart, pubs \ restaurants, etc)
Fortrose Caravan Park \ C&CC Rosemarkie (10 minutes walk to town and same to dolphin watching, 5 minutes walk to golf course)
To add another to that list, there is a C&CC Site in Jedburgh which is pretty handy for the Town. I don't know if I would spend more than a day or so in Jedburgh, but for a short visit of 1-2 days it would be a nice enough place to stay over.

I quite like the site in Cheddar but the town isn't very big.

Great Indian restaurant there with a BYO beer policy. Across the road is a Coop that sells large bottles of Cobra.

What more could you want?(y)
We are going this weekend I'll check out the Indian Friday night for a takeaway, and I've heard that the Bath Arms is very good so gonna book that for Saturday night! (y)

C+cc Club site at St. Neots, Cambridgshire. Level walk into town along the river Great Ouse through a park, various places to eat and in 2019 there were takeaways near the site, and about 2 1/2 hours to the Tunnel if you have a late train. Tesco on the way in, not far off the A1.

Can second the Warwick racecourse site, go during the Folk Festival (21st- 24th July this year) and you can walk to the festival site for concerts, day tickets etc., watch the dancers in the streets on the Saturday and listen to artists in locations in the town throughout. Some top class acts this year, lovely atmosphere. Check out the website. Also: the castle, boating on the river, the Lord Leycester hospital ( location for the Shakespeare and Hathaway TV series), St. Mary's church, cycling the canal towpath to Hatton Locks, Sainsbury's near the site, cycle path around the racecourse, close to bus station with buses to Stratford. Whew!

Swiss Farm 15 mins max walk from henley on Thames. Take lots of money.

C&MC Hawes

The West Midlands Showground campsite, only a 15min walk into the centre of Shrewsbury, which is a lovely town!

Moreton-in-Marsh CAMC is a great site and 10-15 mins leisurely stroll. The town is delightful with many excellent restaurants. Good connecting bus services with Stow-on-the-Wold etc. Brighton is a good site but a bus ride away from centre but shopping galore if that’s what you’re after. Comparing with city centre hotels it’s a bargain. Cheddar CAMC site also good and walkable into town.

Thirsk C&MC site is very handy for the town which is very nice and it has the World of James Herriot museum which is well worth a visit. And across the road is Thirsk Museum. There is also a large Tesco and Lidl just outside the camp site. You do have to move from the camping area on race days to a rally field but the bonus is you get to watch the horse racing. The race dates are on the C&MC website.
And don’t forget Johnson’s Pie Shop, worth the trip for this alone.

Huntingdon Boathaven , a small private site on the banks of the river Ouse with short walks into Huntingdon and Godmanchester with long walks between the two across flood plain meadows. A beautiful area.

Maryport Marina Cumbria

As well as the Kirkcudbright site, there’s another council-run site in Castle Douglas - not the best site, maybe, but very close in to the town.

Also, the site in Grantown-on-Spey.

Maryport Marina Cumbria
Not a vast amount goes on in Maryport, tbh, but if you’re there keep an eye out on Facebook for the fishing boats (Chelaris and Charisma) coming in and selling fish (langoustine, turbot, etc) direct on the quayside.

I don't know about beating it, but Grade III Chrondromalacia Patella pretty well dismisses it 🙄
yes my wife couldn't attempt any of the fells on her mobility scooter, but me and the dog can (Skiddaw is a bit optimistic for me) while my wife heads into Keswick.
We will be there in July hopefully.
Great thread BTW very useful for us as too many campsites bear a town or resort name and are actually miles away on busy or narrow roads unsuitable for a mobility scooter.

Riverside Camping at Stratford, first time we’ve been and here now, lovely site and friendly staff. Level grass pitches with elec and water points all around, fabulous bar and restaurant and I really do mean fabulous.

On the riverside so regular water taxi into the centre Stratford marina for 2 quid or a 15/20 min walk to same marina

I’ve paid £81 for 4 nights so a bargain imo and will def go again 👍
Stayed last year lovely site we watched the euros in the bowls club at the entrance I always manage to find a cheap pint 🍻

Had me worried for a moment there - I thought maybe we went to the wrong site. It is a reasonable walk, but worthwhile (and the Marina with restaurants and a supermarket is quite a lot closer)
Plenty of buses just across main road from site.

Having fully enjoyed our stay at Oxford C&CC and also at York, we're wondering if there are any other scenic / historic / pleasant places served by a 'local' site? We're not really into long walks / bikes / buses, so it really has to be somewhere on the edge (or centre) of town! Either Club, or Independant so long as they have leccy.

UK Suggestions greatly appreciated 👍
Cheltenham race course, easy walk into town, parks and Montpellier area are fab!

Kendal is a nice town to visit.
The C&MC & C&CC sites listed there are well out of the town, but there is an independent site that opened last year.

Is about 10 min walk into town but just across the road from a retail park with a Morrisons, Aldi, B&M etc.

It's very much on the French, Camping Cars style....
Book & pay online, APNR controlled barrier with allocated pitch no., ehu, water, elsan, CCTV security but NO showers or toilets.
2 nights this BH weekend £34.

I dont know if it's still available but you used to be able to overnight on the Cricket Club car park which is in the same area.

Woodlands caravan park in carnoustie is a great family run site on the east coast of Scotland, the beach is around 7 minutes walk, close to shops, pubs and restaurants, around 10 miles north of Dundee and 4 miles south of arbroath

My favourite is Happyford CL at Louth.
Beautiful town with historic church. A fantastic park to walk through/picnic.

And if you like shopping it is great as it has loads of independent shops through out the town centre with very few of the chain stores.

I also love the local pubs, The Wheatsheaf right next to the church is my favourite but don't look at the clocks :p
