Hello, I am looking for recommendations as to the best PAYG data sim (sim only) for use in the EU? We have a Popit sim but are unable to get a response from them to reactivate it. Many thanks in advance.

To reactivate a popit sim that is on hold you need to add credit to your account and then select the plan that you want. This can be done easily using the app. Once you have done this it will auto renew until you put it on hold again.

I had to ask popit how to do this as I could not find the info on their site.

I’ve taken my own sim off hold a couple of times using this process without any problem.

We need to get a new sim apparently but have decided to go with IQ Go as Popit has been expensive to top up in the past

Thank you to everyone who kindly commented on my query - much appreciated! We have decided to use IQ Go this time as it suits our requirements perfectly. Thanks again!

We have always used Popit. Once cancelled the sim is useless and can’t be reactivated. Buy a new one but make sure you use it in the UK before you go, at least 1gb of data should be used to comply with their policies. Do that and cancel at the end of your trip.

For long trips and heavier usage Tiekom works for us. 38euro a month gives us 400gb in Spain and 200gb in other EU countries. Coverage is excellent, and it’s 3euro a month to simply park your account when not in use
That sounds pretty good although the website is a little tricky to navigate.

Can you use that one for six months in any EU country then and can the 400gb / 200gb SIM just be put in a second SIM slot or does it require a separate mifi router?

Hi

Do you know if you can use that SIM in a MiFi unit and use it as a hotspot for a couple of devices?
I just did a chat with Lebara. Here is the reply about using in a MiFi:

You can use the sim card in Mifi devices however we do not guarantee services in these devices are Lebara sim is designed especially for mobile devices.

We have ours delivered to our UK address and use it for the whole eight months in Spain and on route to and from....... and it seems to function best as a hotspot in a redundant smart phone rather than our (now aged) mifi........

Sounds ideal. I think with our Talkmobile / Vodafone contracts calls and messages are included but the roaming data allowance limit is useless. About 5gb so I'll either stick the sim in the second slot of my phone or might buy a dedicated device for it. However it might be best in my phone as I use a fair bit of data out and about as well away from the van.

Another vote for Tiekom. 43 euros a month for 400gb in Spain with 200gb roaming in zone 1 which includes UK. 3 euros a month to pause the service and keep it active. We set up an account and pay invoices by credit card each month.

Their customer service is excellent - email camino.arias@tiekom.com for more information - she speaks perfect English.

Works perfectly in our Huawei mifi and uses the strongest network signal available. We rarely go to Spain so in effect we just use the 200gb. It’s a Movistar SIM.

Poppit was great for us the 3 months we were away earlier this year. You could possibly just start a new contract with them.

Looking at all the data only SIM deals available for Euroland and U.K. reasonable amount of use ‘at the moment’*, I can’t see anything that’s better than the IQGO subscription via Topcashback (with thanks to royw for the heads up). With the discount/cashback it comes in at £11.60 for the initial 12 month SIM card and £11.60 per 100gb/30 days thereafter. No charge for periods not in use.

* Obviously no guarantee how long it will last!

Does that mean it can select other carriers in say France if Movistar is not available?

I use ID mobile, I pay £12 a month for 150gb rome like home. Any unused data rolls over and it really is rome the same as home, and I've never had a problem with signal. I tether my smart TV to it.

Only problem is since I took it out I think they've capped new contracts to 12gb, because I took mine out before this they honour the contract.

Tiecom used to be very popular within the posts on this site a couple of years ago but has now dropped out of favour apparently...!
Does anyone know why ?

IIRC it was due to the halving of the available data in other EU countries outside Spain?
RWG were also popular until they did the same and then reduced even further.

Ah ok thanks......though that still makes it cheaper than (gb for gb) than IQ Go without the cash back deal....!

As you say - without the currently available cash back deal . ;) Plus no charge for ‘parking’ the SIM.

Do you know how much data can be used in the U.K. with the Tiecom SIM?

I don't as we only 'start' it here.......I would assume it will be the 200gb but stand to be corrected on that...!

Hi BikerJon that’s great to hear. I have been using an IqGo sim for the past three months in Scandinavia with no problems except the 100Gb is a bit limiting and we have been getting through it in 15 to 20 days so making it a bit expensive. So I heard that as we had an old ID mobile £15 unlimited sim in our home router we could use that abroad for three months at a time and just get a smaller one to use to keep the house running while away, security cameras and solar panels etc. But many on here have said how bad Three is abroad, it works great at home. But it seems that you have had no problems with signal speed, is that correct?

The original Tiekom deal was a Vodaphone SIM and Vodaphone pulled the plug on unlimited roaming, making it unviable if you only really used the data outside of Spain.

The current deal is through Movistar and even though the roaming allowance is reduced, it’s still a great deal and works well for us.

If you go to Spain you will also have the full data allowance of 400gb to play with 😎

We stopped using them in favour of IQGo, which is better for outside of Spain. I will, however, use them again over the winter when we're hoping to get 2 months in Spain, as it works out cheaper for more data.

In what way better outside of Spain..?

I may be wrong but I believe the new rules have capped the data outside of Spain, so they cannot match the 100gb for £20 from IQGo.

have a look here........
the 400gb euro sim states roaming with 200gb ....... which equates to 22 euro (£19) for 100gb with no retention fees etc......
